London is ranked as the best student city in the UK and third best in the world in the QS Best Student Cities 2015 rankings. Find out why it remains such an attractive choice for students on pages 4–5.
why london?
each year, thousands of
students come to london.
Here are some of the reasons
why they decide investing in
a university education in the
capital is worth every penny.

you don’t just have to rely on the academic facilities within the college, you’ll also have access to world class facilities across the city, including over 380 public libraries and over 170 museums. three of the world’s best museums are on imperial’s doorstep (the natural History, science, and Victoria & albert museums) and all have free entry.
Home students studying in london are entitled to bigger living cost loans from
the uK government than students elsewhere in the uK. the imperial Bursary – in addition to this – is one of the most generous in the sector. see pages 14–15.
london is a truly global city, welcoming students from over 200 nations who contribute to the city’s mix of over 300 languages. you’ll have the chance to develop a global friendship network, while the huge choice of shops, restaurants and cultures means that no matter where you’re from, it’s easy to find the comforts of home.

Home/EU students who have already completed an undergraduate degree may be classed as an Equivalent or Lower Qualification (ELQ) student. ELQ students are not entitled to government support and may pay a higher tuition fee rate. Certain exemptions apply to some students and subjects, including many at Imperial. We will assess your ELQ status as part of the admissions process. Imperial does not currently charge higher fees to ELQ students.

Below is a rough guide to the costs involved in living at imperial in relative comfort for one academic year (39 weeks). don’t forget that this cost does not include your tuition fees. tuition fee loans are available for all Home and eu students so you do not need to have the money upfront – see page 6.
in reality how much you spend will depend on your lifestyle, whether you’re living at home or away, and how good you are at sticking to a budget. your budget needs to be sufficiently detailed to avoid any unwelcome surprises, including allowing for inflationary rises in costs such as rent and travel.
52-week contracts are standard in private accommodation so you will need to budget for the entire year (not just
39 weeks) if you’re not staying in college accommodation or you’re not planning to go home during the holidays.
* Based on prices for 2015–16. costs for 2016–17 will be displayed on our website once confirmed.

maintenance grants will no longer be available for lower income students from england from 2016. instead they will be replaced with more generous means-tested Maintenance Loans that
are 10.3% higher than the maximum
maintenance grant and loan support available for eligible students from low income households in 2015–16. grants (which don’t have to be paid back) will still be available (Home students only) in 2016 for disabled students, full-time students who financially support an adult (adult dependants) and students requiring childcare so it’s worth exploring the full range of help that you may be eligible for.
if you receive a tuition fee loan (see page 6), a means-tested maintenance loan (see left) or both from the uK government via the student loans company you only need to start paying it/them back once you:

not what you owe
the amount you pay back each month is linked to how much you’re earning above the repayment threshold, not on the combined amount of the loans themselves. this means that how much you owe in total, including
any interest added over time, will have no effect on your monthly repayments.
the loans will attract a small rate of interest, even while you’re studying, but the rate is more competitive than commercial loans.

imperial Bursary
baLancing the cost
of London Living
the imperial Bursary is designed to ease the cost of london living by providing support on a sliding scale to Home students with
household incomes up to £60,000 per year.
the Bursary is based solely on financial need to make sure that finance is not a barrier to any Home student who has the potential to succeed at imperial. as long as your household income remains below £60,000, you will automatically qualify for a Bursary for every year of study. the Bursary is designed to complement government’s funding so it’s paid on top of any government loans to
which you’re already entitled. unlike government funding, which is normally paid in three annual instalments, the Bursary is paid in equal monthly instalments throughout the year.
how do i aPPLy?
there is no separate application process – the college uses the financial information you provide to your regional funding body e.g. student finance england for students from england to assess what bursary you may be eligible for.
More than 45%
of first year Home students received
an imperial Bursary towards their living costs in 2014–15.
does it need to be rePaid?
no.
is there a deadLine?
