WHY DURHAM?

FACTS & FIGURES VISION PLANS CONTACT

I got off at Durham and fell in love with it instantly in a serious way.

Why, it's wonderful - a perfect little city... If you have never been to Durham,

go there at once. Take my car. It's wonderful.

Bill Bryson, author and former Chancellor of Durham University

Durham is a breathtakingly beautiful historic city.

It is steeped in glorious ancient architecture and

crowned with two UNESCO World heritage sites,

Durham Cathedral and the stunning 11th Century Castle.

They are cherished not only for their architecture

but also for the incomparable setting.

Nestled on the banks of the River Wear it is a captivating and lively city, which also boasts the third oldest university

in the country. Walk amongst the timeless cobbled streets, manicured squares and quaint treasured buildings and

you will discover a bustling local society with a buzzy contemporary atmosphere. The plethora of boutique shops, artisan workshops, galleries and museums all help to attract the many tourists and day-trippers who come to visit this

amazing city every year.

OUR VISION

The Riverwalk is a spectacular new development

that will enhance the historic City of Durham.

Creating a sympathetically designed leisure and retail

destination with a picturesque outlook over the river.

With stunning views of the Castle it will be set between the two main bridges over the Wear and form a seamless link with the

current old town centre. Once completed it will provide a fabulous array of terraced restaurants along the river, with a softly lit promenade to enjoy the full extent of the views of the Castle above at night. Boutique shops, fashionable retailers and cafes will line the planted open squares and stone paved walkways and a new cinema will be given pride of place

in the heart of the site.

over £30m will be invested into durham, creating an estimated 120 jobs once all

developments are completed
