A note from Roy – on placement with us during March
We are looking forward to getting to know him and learning from him.
Hello everyone, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to you.
My name is Roy Hadfield and I am a Licensed Lay
Minister-in-Training, based at St Mary’s Church, Bulwell.
As part of my training, I will be joining you on a placement with the Parish of Clifton for the month of March.
St Mary’s is quite ‘high church’ or ‘Anglo-Catholic’, but not really as formal as that sounds; although we do ring
a little bell for the bread and the wine at Communion; and we do have a bit of incense at the Christmas Midnight Mass!
My placement with you will give me a good experience of a different way of doing church. I am very much looking forward to my time with you, particularly in worship, prayer, and reflection in Lent; and perhaps also contributing to
church life in the parish, in whatever ways may be practical during the pandemic.
I would like to thank Reverend Lydia for affording me this great opportunity.
I was born in New Basford, but my family moved to Clifton when I was four; so I attended the Whitegate infants and junior schools, and Fairham Comprehensive, and continued to live on the estate until I married my wife Barbara.
We have recently moved back to Clifton, so you may well see me around the estate. It is quite likely that some of you will know me from my previous time at Clifton and so I look forward to renewing some acquaintances.
Best regards, Roy
Look outside and notice the signs of the changing seasons.
Things in our world never stay the same for long – they are constantly changing, but God is the same yesterday, today and forever.
Pray:
Thank you God that you are a solid rock in whom we can put our faith and trust.
Be with us we pray as winter gives way to spring and we look with hope to the future.
Amen
Sing:
Holy, holy, holy is the Lord, Holy is the Lord God almighty.
Holy, holy, holy is the Lord, Holy is the Lord God almighty.
Who was, and is, and is to come, Holy, holy, holy is the Lord.
Worthy, worthy, worthy is the Lord, Worthy is the Lord God almighty.
Worthy, worthy, worthy is the Lord, Worthy is the Lord God almighty.
Who was, and is, and is to come, Worthy, worthy, worthy is the Lord.
Anger is a really powerful emotion. I wonder what kinds of things make you angry. I’d love to say I (Lydia) only get all worked up and angry about injustices in our world…. But I confess that most of my anger is directed at people leaving dirty clothes on their bedroom floor and dirty pots around the house!
Today’s Bible passage depicts a moment where we see a glimpse of Jesus being angry – often referred to as “righteous anger” or “justifiable anger”. The scene is set in Jerusalem – an important place for religion and politics and there is a lot going on to get Jesus hot under the collar:
Into the word…
Home Worship – Jesus Overturns the Tables in the Temple
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus is the Lord, Jesus is the Lord God almighty.
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus is the Lord, Jesus is the Lord God almighty.
Who was, and is, and is to come, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus is the Lord.
Glory, glory, glory to the Lord, Glory to the Lord God almighty.
Glory, glory, glory to the Lord, Glory to the Lord God almighty.
Who was, and is, and is to come, Glory, glory, glory to the Lord.
Read John 2:13-22
13 When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14 In the temple courts he found people selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money. 15 So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. 16 To those who sold doves he said, “Get these out of here! Stop turning my Father’s house into a market!” 17 His disciples remembered that it is written: “Zeal for your house will consume me.”
18 The Jews then responded to him, “What sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?”
19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.”
20 They replied, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?” 21 But the temple he had spoken of was his body. 22 After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken.
God’s temple was being misused and those coming to worship were being exploited. It is no wonder Jesus was cross.
What kinds of practices go on in our world today that are also likely to make Jesus angry?
What should our response be? How could we make a difference?
I am quite sure the temple officials would have been able to justify to themselves all that was going on – that the stalls were convenient for worshippers and that the Temple needed funds for its upkeep.
In what ways do we justify wrongful exploitation and injustices?
Pray
Jesus, help us to see people and situations with your heart and eyes. Give us courage to speak out for those who have no voice and bring into the light those things that are hidden in darkness. Amen
Other Bible passages to consider this week – Psalm 19 and Exodus 20:1-17
To think about….
Use these sentences to guide your prayers:
Let us pray to God the Father,
who has reconciled all things to himself in Christ:
For peace among the nations,
that God may rid the world of violence
and let peoples grow in justice and harmony…
For those who serve in public office,
that they may work for the common good…
For Christian people everywhere,
that we may joyfully proclaim and live our faith in Jesus Christ…
For those who suffer from hunger, sickness or loneliness,
that the presence of Christ may bring them health and wholeness…
Let us commend ourselves, and all for whom we pray, to the mercy and protection of God.
The Lord’s Prayer…
Our Father in heaven…
Let us pray… prayers adapted from the Church of England website.

Midday prayer Eternal God, the light of the minds that know you, the joy of the hearts that love you, and the strength of the wills that serve you:
grant us so to know you that we may truly love you, so to love you that we may truly serve you, whose service is perfect freedom;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
A morning prayer from the Northumbria Community Christ, as a light
illumine and guide me.
Christ, as a shield overshadow me.
Christ under me;
Christ over me;
Christ beside me
on my left and my right.
This day be within and without me, lowly and meek, yet all-powerful.
Be in the heart of each to whom I speak;
in the mouth of each who speaks unto me.
This day be within and without me, lowly and meek, yet all-
powerful.
Christ as a light;
Christ as a shield;
Christ beside me
on my left and my right.
A night prayer
Now as I lay me down to sleep,
I pray the Lord my soul to keep,
Watch and guard me through the night, and wake me with the morning light.
Amen.
