A Letter from the President
Shadow Riders,
Another month down the drain. Where does the time go?? We’re getting closer to the end of the ride season and we have openings from the 29th of this month through the end of November. If you have a favorite ride that you like to do, and we haven’t done it yet, or if you went on a ride that you really enjoyed, maybe we can fill up the schedule and put that behind us. Karen wanted me to remind you that you do not have to be a Ride Captain to lead a Sunday ride. All you have to do is put a route together; send it to me; pre-ride it before the ride date; and come with route sheets on the day of the ride. It couldn’t be sim- pler. As I’ve said in the past: there’s no one in the Club who has done a ride that won’t help you with yours if you ask. We’re always glad to help get someone started. Did I hap- pen to mention that whoever organizes a Sunday ride or Club trip will get a free ticket to the Holiday Party?
I missed many of you at Bikes; Blues; and Bar-B-Que this year. It was a little humid but everybody had a great time and some of us are looking forward to next year’s event. We didn’t have as many vendors as usual this year but we later found out that there was a rally somewhere in Ohio with about 450 vendors, including many of the motorcycle manufac- turers. We’ll keep our eye out for that one and see if maybe we have something else to plan for.
I have one more closing thought: if you wish to send something out for the Club to con- sider please send it to the membership link on the website. Don’t go to the buzz book and write in the members’ e-mail addresses individually. This way I can review it; send it out;
and the e-mail just has Shadow Riders Membership as the recipient. We can avoid any possible invasions by spyware or malware that might lurk on someone’s computer looking for e-mail addresses in the inbox. I’m just sayin’ . . .
Ride Safe!

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING 9/26/17 Meeting started at 7 pm
President John reported that Bikes Blues & BBQ in Fayetteville was a good time with several members at- tending. The weather was hot and some witnessed a bike going up in flames. It's that time of year when we start to consider joining the Shadow Riders Board and nomina- tions for next year. If you are interested in becoming more involved we welcome your input.
Jim reported membership count at 118. New mem- bers Alan and Michelle Jobe attended the meeting, they ride a 2013 HD Ultra.
Treasurer Tony reported he received a check from our advertising sponsor, Gateway BMW for $120 for advertis- ing in our newsletter for 1 year. Recent merchandise sales totaled $65 and the bank balance stands at $10,209.47.
Chili Guru Diana announced she is taking part in the Chili cook off at St. Charles HD this year, taking place October 28. She is asking that the Shadow Riders show their support by attending this event and voting for her Triple Pepper Penetration Chili for Peoples Choice. The more votes she gets, the more money will be donated to our 2018 charity.
A short discussion took place regarding the clubs ar- chived photo albums. Diana has made several attempts to no avail to retrieve them from a former member.
Safety Officer Ross announced there a still a couple of Sunday rides to fill and November is wide open at this point.
Lisa has the merchandise with her if anyone wants to purchase.
Webmaster Ted reported the website is up to date.
Laura reported Ride for Wishes raised $19,900 for the Make A Wish Foundation. She is going to book the Elk's Lodge for our Holiday Party in January, date to fol- low soon.

Hello Shadow Riders...
It's been another great summer of riding. Now, Fall is setting in and the tempera- tures are beginning to cool. Remember to check your tire pressures before every ride!
The Sunday Ride calendar has a couple more scheduled rides and then there are open-dates beginning on 10/29. I'm sure that we will get some good weather into No- vember, so if you can lead a ride, just send me an email and I will get it added to the Calendar. Even if there is no ride scheduled, there is usually someone at our meeting place that will lead an impromptu ride.
Ride safe everyone!
Vice President’s Article (continued on Page 4) The Ride to Las Vegas
There isn't a lot to report on as VP so I thought I would tell you about the trip to Las Vegas. As most of you are aware, the club did a 10 day trip around California, starting and ending in Las Vegas. There were a total of 10 people and 9 bikes. Most people got there on their own, but Rich Bayers, Lou Soucy and I rode out there together. We took 5 days to get there and 5 days to get home. By the end of our 20 day trip, we logged just over 7,100 miles. Thank goodness for synthetic oil!
As you would expect, the first day was rather boring. We jumped on I-70 to US-40 and stopped for the night just 15 miles east of Colorado. It was really nice to get KS out of the way on the first day. Things improved on the second day. We went through Monarch Pass and the Black Canyon of the Gunnison.
We rode along the top of the Canyon for a while to see the awesome view of the Canyon itself, then we went and drove in the Canyon itself. We've been there many times and it's always beautiful to see.
The third day brought us to 4 corners. I had been there in the 80s and boy
has it changed. We had to stand in line to take pictures at the site of the 4 cor-
ners but it didn't take long.

After that we took a detour and headed to Monument Valley. It wasn't on the original route, but it's so beautiful we all wanted to go see it again. That is defi- nitely a must see for everyone!
On our fourth day we went to the north rim of the Grand Canyon. That was the day of the solar eclipse. Unfortunately, it was only a 75% eclipse there, so we didn't get the spectacular effects that you had here. There was a really nice lady there who shared her glasses with us so we could all see the eclipse. After the eclipse, we had lunch in the lodge and it was really good. On the way out of the park, we could see that we were headed for a nice black wall of rain. But there was a surprise waiting for us in addition to the torrential downpour -
HAIL! That's not fun with an open face helmet and fingerless gloves!!! By the time we could stop, we were soaked. We put on our rain gear in the pouring rain and hail and just as we finished, the rain lightened up and the hail stopped. Isn't that the way it always happens? Luckily, that was the only really wet weather we had for the entire 20 day trip.
The fifth day, we went to Zion National Park. If you've never been there, you park your vehicle and then take a bus to the different attractions in the park.
We were there for 3 or 4 hours. It really is spectacular. Unfortunately, the Weeping Rock (my favorite from a previous trip) was closed, but everything else was open. It was so hot, when we got back to the bikes, the kick stands had sunk about 1/4 inch into the blacktop! From there we headed to Las Vegas and it definitely didn't get any cooler. We drove in 104 degrees for several hours.
Driving into Las Vegas on motorcycles was a nightmare and the heat made it even worse! Enough said about that. LOL
So those are the highlights from the trip to Las Vegas. Next month, I'll write about the trip home from Las Vegas.
Keep wearing your name tags!

Oct. 15: Erin O’Donnell will be taking us through some great roads to the Midway Café in Weingarten, MO. I’ve been enjoying their world famous onion rings since I was a teenager about a hundred years ago. Good times!
Oct. 22: Our Safety Officer, Ross McGovern is going to take us to Villa Ridge for the St. John Gildehaus Sausage Dinner. These folks are known for their great sau- sage and we always “pig out” (see what I did there??) on their delicious neck bones, sauerkraut, potatoes, and all the fixins’. We always receive a warm welcome at the church and the service is awesome. Please remember to bring cash to this event since this is a church event.
Oct. 29: Either Andrea will take us to Jnl2 for lunch in Owensville, MO or I will take us somewhere we haven’t been yet this year. We will update you when we know for sure.
November is open rides every Sunday thus far. If you would be so kind as to participate by organizing a ride it would be greatly appreciated.
