Introduction
World Geography in Christian Perspective presents a physical-cultural study of the earth and mankind from a conservative, Christian perspective. Basic to this perspec- tive is the conviction that God is the Creator of the earth and of man. The student can better understand the physical features of the earth as well as the cultures of its people by applying his knowledge of the Creation, the Flood, the beginning of nations at Babel, and God’s dealing with mankind through- out the ages to the study of geography. The Christian perspective is the key to a
proper understanding of geography, history, and current events.
As students learn about the topography and political divisions of the continents, they discover the wonderful variety of cultures around the world today. Acts 17:24–26 (“God . . . hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth”) teaches two important truths:
(1) all mankind has a common ancestry, and (2) the God who created the first man and woman also brought the many nations of the world into existence. Like all of the Creator’s handiwork, each nation has its own distinct identity. While most geography texts approach world geography from the globalist perspective, World Geography in Christian Perspective recognizes the national
identities of individual countries. Customs, religions, languages, historic backgrounds, and other factors are highlighted to hold the student’s interest and expand his knowledge of each continent, region, and country he studies.
World Geography Map Studies contains atlas maps and geography studies for the conti- nents and islands of the world. These maps give the student valuable practice in locating political and physical features in our world.
All map studies include questions which review the facts presented in World Geogra- phy in Christian Perspective.
Each video lesson is about 45 minutes in length and will best fit into a 50-minute class period. Five minutes is allotted for you to check homework. You will need to give quizzes and tests personally and hear Cur- rent Events presentations.
Establish accountability on the part of each student. Let students know that you expect them to listen, learn, and participate actively with the video class.
Note: Since the length of a school semester may vary, lessons have been recorded for fewer than 90 days. The extra days are allotted for the scheduling of field trips or special school events. Time could also be allotted for standardized testing available through Abeka Testing (1-877-223-5226).
General Information
The course materials have been carefully outlined so that you, as the home teacher, can easily supervise your students’ learning.
Your main responsibilities are to ensure that the lessons are completed daily, to review material from the book for reinforcement, and to administer and supervise all quiz- zes and tests. In many ways, you are the key to your students’ progress in their courses.
Your concern and diligence in helping them
complete their work according to proper procedures will let them know you are determined to help them succeed.
Note: See Appendix B for additional informa- tion about grading and recording.
Plan a definite time and an environment conducive to learning for your students to complete their work each day. The video lessons are most beneficial when students participate with the class in all oral work.
Equipment and Supplies
Before the first day of class, you should have the following items:
1. computer or DVD player
2. computer monitor or television 3. desks and chairs
4. video manuals
5. student textbooks 6. teacher materials
7. DVDs (if applicable)
8. additional supplies listed on p. T2
Responsibilities of the Home Teacher
1. Check Equipment. Check the equipment each day to make sure it is running prop- erly. Be ready to start on the right lesson.
2. Follow the Daily Guides. Check the Daily Guides each day to determine specific responsibilities for that day.
3. Check Homework. Check daily at the beginning of class to see that each student has completed his homework. Spot-check the homework quickly (using World Geog- raphy in Christian Perspective Answer Key) to see whether students are completing the homework questions accurately. It is not necessary to grade the homework unless the Daily Guides instruct otherwise.
4. Assign an activity for Homework Check.
Each lesson of the Daily Guides has an activity for the students to do while you check the homework assignment.
5. Give Quizzes and Tests. You will be giving quizzes and tests as they occur in the lessons. Certain quizzes will be dic- tated by you (from the Appendix that is found in the back of this video manual), and others will be distributed (from World Geography Quizzes / Tests). Plan to remain in the classroom during any quiz or test. Grade quizzes in class with students and grade tests after school.
The tests are found in World Geography Quizzes / Tests. Further quizzing and testing information is provided in the Giving / Grading Quizzes and Tests sec- tion on p. T9 of this video manual.
6. Supervise Current Events. You will assign, hear, and grade Current Events presen- tations as they occur in the lessons. To be prepared, stay informed of current happenings in the world. See the Cur- rent Events section on p. T6 of this video manual for further details.
Class Schedule
The following is a typical class schedule for World Geography with suggested times for students to participate.
1. Pre-Video Activities. Check homework and give any quizzes before turning on the video for the day’s lesson, unless the Daily Guides instruct otherwise.
a. Homework Check. Begin each day with homework check. The written home- work usually consists of text questions (that students answer in complete sentences) and map studies from World Geography Map Studies. You may wish to have students do homework in a spiral notebook so they can keep it as a study tool. While students com- plete the homework check activity you assigned from the Daily Guides, make sure that students have completed their homework; spot-check for accuracy.
(Although students may not completely understand a question, they should
attempt to answer every question.) The assignment should require no more than 20–30 minutes for students to complete. Suggest methods of more efficient study to students who consis- tently take longer. Five minutes is allot- ted for this check.
b. Quizzes and Tests. You will be giving quizzes and tests as they occur in the lessons. Quizzes are usually given after the homework check. The Daily Guides or video will indicate when to give the quiz. The Appendix quizzes and answers are located in Appen- dix A that is found in the back of this video manual. A grading scale is also included on p. A5 of Appendix A. The printed review quizzes are from World Geography Quizzes / Tests with answers and point values for each quiz in World Geography Teacher Quiz / Test Key.
The video teacher gives brief direc- tions for the first review quiz (les. 3)
T6 • World Geography
and the first Appendix A quiz (les. 5).
View these lessons with students to note the procedures used by the video teacher. Tests are from World Geography Quizzes / Tests with answers and point values for each test in World Geography Teacher Quiz / Test Key. Further quiz- zing and testing information is pro- vided in the Giving / Grading Quizzes and Tests section on p. T8 of this video manual.
2. Video Activities.
a. Homework Presentation. After these pre- liminary procedures, turn on the video for the homework presentation.
Most of the lessons begin with a discus- sion of the homework questions and answers. Students should follow the homework discussions carefully.
b. Review and Lesson. After homework has been discussed, the video teacher reviews important principles and pre- sents new material. Students follow the lesson as they are instructed on video.
It is vital that students pay close atten- tion, use their books, and follow the question-and-answer exchange given on the video. Tell students to answer the teacher’s questions in their minds (or aloud) and to follow closely the answers given by the video students. Paying close attention to this portion of the video lesson will help students to learn and retain the facts and principles they need to know.
c. Homework Assignment. The video teacher gives the homework assignment at the conclusion of each lesson. Stu- dents should copy this assignment into their assignment notebooks. The home- work assignment is listed at the end of each lesson in the Daily Guides.
3. Current Events. Current Events presen- tations may be given before or after the lesson. Sample Current Events presenta- tions are given in lesson 5. Plan to watch these sample presentations with students before having them give their presenta- tions.
Current Events
An important part of geography class is the discussion of Current Events. Students need to be aware of world events and the effect those events have on our world. As the home teacher, you should be sufficiently informed about current news items, since you will be the key in the selection of topics and in the discussions. You will greatly influ- ence the opinions your students form. Some of your responsibilities in this area will be to guide your students’ thinking by help- ing them to review the news in the light of the Word of God and pointing out to them that what they read in newspapers or hear on newscasts is not necessarily the pure, unbiased truth. Newspapers adopt editorial viewpoints and slant their interpretation of current happenings to reflect editors’
opinions. You will also want to point out the over-abundance of negative and sensational reporting. Help students to understand and to interpret current happenings accord- ing to biblical truth. Doing Current Events will make students increasingly aware that the questions and struggles of mankind throughout history are still important today.
The video teacher will assign each student a Current Event every week. Be alert to stu- dents’ choice of topics; topics should be suit- able / appropriate. All Current Event reports will be collected and marked for comple- tion. A Current Events guidelines sheet is included in Appendix A for your reference.
To prepare a Current Event, a student needs to find an article from a published news source. These sources can be newspapers, magazines, pamphlets, or Internet news arti- cles. A list of suggested library periodicals that students could use for their Current Events is included in the next paragraph.
After reading the article, the student should write a report that is about one page in length. The report should include the fol- lowing three sections: (1) bibliographical information from the source, (2) a one- or two-paragraph summary of the article, and (3) a personal opinion of the topic and of the writing style and persuasive ability of the author. The summary should be the longest.
Students need guidance in selecting appro- priate resources for Current Events. The following periodicals have published sound articles from a conservative perspective.
Christian Anti-Communism Crusade Citizen
Conservative Chronicle Human Events
Ideas on Liberty National Review The New American
The Phyllis Schlafly Report The WallBuilder Report World
Note: The views and opinions expressed in these sources do not necessarily reflect the views of Abeka.
When a student is called upon to pres- ent his Current Event report, he should stand before his audience and read his report word for word. Afterward, he will be responsible to answer any questions that
the audience or the teacher may have. Allow 3–5 minutes for each presentation and its discussion.
Grade the oral presentations as you listen to them each week. Lesson 5 contains three student presentations that are graded by the video teacher. You may wish to view this portion of the video with your students to see how the video students are graded. The following guidelines are suggested to help you grade your students:
I. Content (85 points)
A. Accuracy of summary (25 points)
B. Significance of the topic (25 points)
C. Analysis of the topic (in light of the principles of government and eco- nomics studied in the text) (35 points)
II. Delivery (15 points)
A. Posture, poise, eye contact (5 points)
B. Enthusiasm, smoothness, expression
(5 points)
C. Preparation for oral delivery (5 points)
Count current events grades as quiz grades.
Praying for Government Officials
To help students develop a burden for their leaders, pray with students for govern- ment officials once or twice a week. A form entitled Praying for Government Offi- cials is provided on p. A3 of Appendix A (located in the back of this video manual).
It may be duplicated as needed. The first time you pray, have students copy on their form the names of the president and the vice president; your national senators and representatives (those from your area);
your governor, state senators, and repre- sentatives (those from your area); and your local mayor, city manager, police chief, and sheriff. Have them pray for a few of these officials each time. Ask students for impor- tant local, state, national, or international matters about which the class needs to pray.
Current Event presentations may suggest areas of prayer. Have students pray before you close in prayer.
Map Studies
World Geography Map Studies is designed for the students to use with the World Geography in Christian Perspective textbook.
These map studies are coordinated with the maps in the text for the reinforcement of map skills and geographic knowledge.
For each map study, students will complete a political and a physical map (sometimes combined into one map) and then answer review questions from material in the text.
The basic maps are located in World Geog- raphy Map Studies. Students will label the
places on them. (Answers for the map study are provided in the World Geography Map Studies Teacher Key.) These studies are assigned in the Daily Guides for this course.
Map studies are graded as quizzes. The first map study is introduced in lesson 1 and due in lesson 4. Grading guidelines are given in the Daily Guides in the lesson in which the map study is due. Average the grades with the quiz grades at the end of each grading period.

Giving / Grading Quizzes and Tests
The following procedures are used by the video teacher in the classroom. Adapt these proce- dures to fit your situation while providing appropriate supervision in the handling of graded items.
Procedure for Giving Appendix Quizzes
Appendix quizzes, unannounced quizzes over the reading homework, are given before the video is turned on.
1. Students clear their desks and take out two clean sheets of paper, a pen, and a pencil. Students will use one clean sheet of paper for the quiz and one for a cover sheet. Students should take quizzes in pen and grade them in pencil.
2. After each student writes his name at the top of his paper, dictate the quiz, reading each question twice. (The quizzes and answers are located in Appendix A in the back of this video manual.) Students should move their cover sheet down to cover their answers as they take the quiz.
3. The quiz should take approximately 5 minutes.
Procedure for Giving Printed Review Quizzes
1. Students clear their desks and take out one clean sheet of paper for a cover sheet, a pen, and a pencil. Students should take quizzes in pen and grade them in pencil.
2. Distribute the quizzes. (Quizzes are located in World Geography Quizzes / Tests.) Each student should write his
name at the top of his quiz before begin- ning the quiz. Students should move their cover sheet down to cover their answers as they take the quiz.
3. The quiz should take approximately 10 minutes.
Procedure for Grading All Quizzes
1. Instruct students to put their pens away (off their desks) and to grade in pencil.
2. Tell students how you want them to exchange papers. If you have a large class, vary the pattern from day to day (pass them forward one seat, back one seat, across, to the left, etc.).
3. Have each student sign his name (in pencil) on the paper he grades.
4. Give instructions for grading—how many points to deduct for each wrong answer and how to mark the papers.
(Having students grade the papers in a uniform manner saves time when you go through the papers later.) Answers and point values are given in World Geogra- phy Teacher Quiz / Test Key or on p. A5 of Appendix A. On all graded items, sub- tract 1 point for each misspelled answer;
do not subtract more than 5 total points.
5. Give correct answers.
6. Students figure the final grade by sub- tracting from 100 the total number of points missed. The grade should be writ- ten in the space provided.
7. If a student has a question about the paper he is grading, have him place a question mark by both the number in question and the grade at the top.
8. Instruct students to return papers to the owners, who should check them briefly and pass them to the front.
9. Go through the quizzes later, checking for question marks and misspelled answers. Record the grades.
Note: See Appendix B for additional inform- ation about grading and recording.
Procedure for Giving / Grading Tests
1. Students clear their desks of everything except one clean sheet of paper for a cover sheet and two pens.
2. Distribute the tests. (Tests are located in World Geography Quizzes / Tests.) Each student should write his name at the top of his test.
3. Explain any special directions. Students should finish during the time allotted.
Also, tell the students what is to be done when they finish the test (where to turn in their tests, what to study, etc.).
4. Students take the test in pen, writing the answers directly on the test paper.
Students should move their cover sheets down to cover their answers as they take the test.
5. Always watch students until all the tests have been turned in.
6. Check that all tests have been collected.
Grade these tests yourself. Do not grade tests in class. Answers and point values are given in World Geography Teacher Quiz / Test Key. Subtract 1 point for each misspelled answer; do not subtract more than 5 total points. It is best not to record grades in your grade book until after going over the test in class.
7. Have all tests graded and ready to return in the next lesson.
Note: See Appendix B for additional inform- ation about grading and recording.
Procedures for Going Over Graded Tests
1. Students clear their desks of everything except a pencil. Distribute graded tests.
2. To go over a test, ask if a student has all answers correct in the first section.
Choose a student to read the answers in that section. Continue this procedure until all answers have been given. Answer any questions students may have about a particular test question.
3. Watch students carefully while you are going over a test. They should not have any pens out while they have graded tests.
4. If students find that a question has been graded incorrectly, they should write (in pencil) the number of the incorrectly graded question and put a question mark at the top of the first page.
5. Collect tests, check any question marks, and record grades.
T10 • World Geography
Averaging Grades
Grades are averaged at the end of the quarter (nine weeks) following these procedures.
1. The average of all quiz grades, including Current Events and map studies, will count as one-third of the quarter average.
2. The average of the test grades for the quarter (except for the final test of the quarter), will count as one-third of the quarter average.
3. The final one-third of the quarter average is the Quarter, Semester, or Final Exam.
4. The semester average is calculated by averaging two quarter averages.
First Quarter Average
¹⁄₃ Quiz average
