Personal computers have revolutionised the way that people access information today. They are also changing the way in which video data can be captured and transmitted. It is becoming increasingly easier and more cost-effective than ever for companies to turn to digital systems for the transmission and storage of video images.
And, it is now possible for companies to monitor digital video images over an ethernet network (LAN/WAN) using the most common communication standard - IP (Internet protocol), and put that information to use -from a distance.
The merging of analogue and digital systems is particularly relevant in the surveillance market, where the integration of both technologies is bringing even more
functionality and more flexibility to Siemens' existing CCTV ranges - at lower cost. The TELSCAN Web Server from Siemens is a compact, standalone surveillance device for the remote viewing of video images.
mote monitoring of CCTV cameras over a network.
It takes analogue video signals and transmits high quality pictures via TCP/IP network using the professional JPEG compression standard. No additional hardware or software is needed.
Each unit can transmit up to four cameras over the network - to provide independent, remote server management - using a standard web browser (such as Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator etc.).

positions, allowing simple and quick control. When an alarm is activated, images can be automatically transmitted over the network and full control of the cameras on site is remotely enabled - in this way, the system does away with the need and expense for full-time guards constantly patrolling any site. Applications
TELSCAN Web Server is suitable for a diverse range of CCTV surveillance and monitoring applications in car parks, schools, public buildings, factories, production plants, warehouses, shops, hotels etc.
It can also be used as a simple, practical means to perform other more mundane tasks. For instance, at an entry barrier when an in-coming driver presses the button to gain admission, TELSCAN Web Server will automatically transmit an image to an operator's desk to signal the need for the barrier to be lifted - with the added advantage that a snapshot of the vehicle and its license plate can then be taken before allowing entry to the site or car park.
Supermarkets with cameras on the aisles could monitor the interest from the public and actually see if promotional sales are successful. Time is saved, as all the regional stores can be viewed from one location. Many shops, car parks, warehouses or offices
already have cameras installed and most desks already have a PC on them - simply by adding a TELSCAN Web Server, these camera images can then be viewed anywhere on the network and it is as simple as counting to three:
Plug in the camera signal Plug in the ethernet cable
View images anywhere on the network It’s that simple!
TELSCAN Web Server transmits high quality pictures (up to 25 images per second), therefore is ideal for monitoring locations or acting as a 'virtual receptionist’, even providing 'virtual tours' of businesses, manufacturing or retail premises - you can show guests or prospective customers around several different locations - without even leaving the office - making huge savings in time, effort and cost.
TELSCAN Web Server will display images on request or, according to configurable events, will independently send e-mails with images attached - for example at 10 am everyday, an e-mail can be sent containing snapshot images of all cameras, ensuring they have no problems, or if required on receiving an alarm, a snapshot can be taken and e-mailed. Control
It can even display images in a "Mini-TV" format which can be put in any position, at any size on the PC monitor screen,
eliminating the need for opening the web browser - also saving an unsightly security monitor sat on the desk.
And, a variety of serial interfaces and digital inputs/outputs are available for connecting external devices such as alarms or PTZ (pan/tilt/zoom) devices - an on screen keyboard ensures full telemetry controls are available, including calling and setting preset

images from your existing CCTV cameras
Water Authorities could access images remotely to monitor reservoir or river water levels from a distance.
The simple operation and functionality of TELSCAN Web Server, together with its versatility, mean that monitoring and management of video devices is readily achieveable via a network and web browser -and because it uses an established network, TELSCAN Web Server needs no extensive cabling - again keeping costs and disruption to an absolute minimum.
Integration
Simple retrofit upgrade - many offices, shops, buildings already have cameras installed. Simply insert the TELSCAN Web Server between the camera and an ethernet port and view the images from the camera anywhere on the network. Access is restricted to three password protected security levels for viewing images, controlling PTZ devices and setup.
And, when used in conjunction with SIMATRIX (Siemens' video matrix), TELSCAN Web Server can be connected via RS232 to remotely switch up to 99 cameras and transmit them over the network.
For example, with the alarm monitor output on the matrix connected as an input to the TELSCAN Web Server, when the system goes into alarm, it will automatically transmit the images from the camera in alarm over the network.
The operator receiving these images can then remotely switch the other cameras to check the area completely - thereby providing an efficient and cost-effective method of visual verification for any alarm.
The benefits, like the camera images, are there for all to see:
Easy to install - simply connect to camera and plug into network port Use existing CCTV cameras Needs no separate cabling - use existing ethernet network Multi-user, multiple-functionality at low cost
Connect up to 4 cameras per unit Control PTZ devices
Interfaces with motion detectors, sensors, door contacts etc. Real-time viewing of events Scaleable bandwidth for picture transmission
Advanced alarm handling including sending e-mails & picture snapshots 3 level password security

Sofware Tools
For the IT manager, software tools included with TELSCAN Web Server include “IP Manager” and “Live Player”. “IP Manager” is great for searching the network for connected Web Server devices, rather than trying to remember the IP addresses. These are then presented in a telephone book view, including the location name for easy identification. Simply selecting the location and and hitting the button “Home page of selected server”, opens the site via a web browser - it’s as straight forward as that! If the network does not allow the use of web browsers, then the Siemens viewer “Live Player” enables viewing of cameras. Similar to the “IP Manager”, a telephone book is presented, however the “Live Player” program opens. Multiple “Live Players” can be opened for different sites, or different cameras and all displayed on a PC at the same time.
Shortcuts can be configured and placed on the PC desk top - with a double click these automatically open the desired TELSCAN Web Server with the required camera and picture size, including the possibility to open in “Mini-TV” format. Icons can be easily identified with useful site names. Store your own website
Instead of typing IP addresses to view cameras, why not upload your own site layout into TELSCAN Web Server (see the picture ‘Viewing a site over LAN’). With 8 MB of memory, it is possible to load "html" pages and have your own mini-website stored on the web server. On a PC, simply save the website address in the “Favourites” and select it to load the website, showing an overview of the site, with icons for the cameras - click on the icon to see its images - simple for everyone ...
