INTRODUCING THE 2021 HUGHES HOUSE CAPTAINS:

Hi! We are Charlotte and Amelia. We have been lucky enough to be appointed the 2021Hughes House Captains. We were so happy when we were awarded this important leadership role. Some responsibilities we have taken on so far include leading assembly, lost property, sports equipment and Play is the Way whole school activities. We are always available in the yard and we are more than happy to help anyone!

RESPECTFUL PARENT/SCHOOL RELATIONSHIPS:

At Nar Nar Goon Primary School, we are more than happy to work with parents if ever there are concerns or complaints raised with staff. Our Complaints Policy is available on the website, and it outlines the avenues available for you to have your concerns addressed, but I would like to stress that there are also clear guidelines as to the code of conduct of complainants to ensure our

discussions are mutually respectful and courteous. Aggressive and intimidating behaviour towards staff is unacceptable at any time, no matter the circumstances. By solving concer ns in a r espectful w ay, you ar e modelling behaviours to your children that will serve them well in their endeavours to be respectful citizens of the future.

On a further note, please understand that our teachers will not be replying to emails or SeeSaw messages on weekends or out of school hours. It is important that they too are able to experience a healthy work/life balance.

I thank you for your understanding in these matters. TRAFFIC IN SPENCER STREET:

Could all parents please note that there are NO STANDING signs directly outside the school on both sides of Spencer Street from 8:00-9:30 am and 2:30-4:00pm on every school day. This is not a drop off and pick up zone, and definitely not to be used by parents when visiting the school to speak with staff during these times. The space must be left vacant for our buses and to ensure the smooth flow of traffic during these very busy times. Pa r ents/Ca r er s a r e r em inded to follow this procedure to ensure cars travel in a loop – the entrance to the football ground is through the second driveway – not the first where the recreation reserve ticketing booth is located ie:

Drive to the second driveway that leads to the football ground, turn right into this carpark and exit from the top driveway back into Spencer Street. Do not proceed into the bowl of the court.

VANDALISM ON SCHOOL PROPERTY:

Unfortunately, once again, our school has been the victim of vandalism out of hours from young adults visiting the school and accessing the roof of classrooms. Most alarming of all is the practice of jumping from the roof onto the shade cloth outside the Art Room, resulting in a large tear in the shade cloth which now needs replacement. We frequently find broken glass from beer bottles consumed on the property on weekends, as well as broken lights and broken seating and the remnants of take away food. Whilst the police have been notified and have visited the school, I am requesting community members to support us by calling 000 should they see concerning behaviour when driving past the school, particularly on weekends. If you notice anyone on the roof, please call the police. Whilst our beautiful rural and secluded aspect makes our school a pristine location and a lovely environment to grow and learn, it also unfortunately attracts unwanted visitors passing the time in socially negative ways.

NAR NAR GOON COMMUNITY ANZAC SERVICE:

It was an honour once again to be involved in the ANZAC dawn service at the Nar Nar Goon Cenotaph on Sunday 25th April. Whilst it was cold and crisp, it was a very moving service, and our School Captains Blake and Georgia were both delighted to be able to share a favourite verse with the community and to lay the school’s wreath on behalf of all students and staff. Blake and Georgia both represented our school with great pride and dignity. These two school captains also led our school community with our own ANZAC service in the courtyard before the weekend of ANZAC day.

MOTHERS DAY CELEBRATIONS:

I would like to extend a huge thank you to the PAFA committee for their efforts in catering for such a delicious afternoon tea. In particular, I would like to acknowledge Kerry Harley and her mother Cheryl, Amanda Henry and our PAFA president Sarah Hawkins for thinking outside the square and using camp kitchens to boil water on a day we had no electricity. Sarah and her team did an amazing job sourcing Mother’s Day raffle prizes and then reappeared the following morning to give the children an opportunity to purchase their own gift from the Mother’s Day stall. Thank you to all the mothers who came along and joined in the fun with the children for the last half hour of the day on Thursday.

I would like to wish all mothers a very HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY on Sunday!

Kind Regards,

WORKING WITH CHILDREN’S CHECKS—A GOVERNMENT REGULATION

A reminder that EVERY HELPER in our school must wear their Working With Children Card on one of our visitor lanyards, or a visitors badge when helping in our school. This could be for reading helpers, sport helpers, classroom helpers, PAFA friends etc. This is policy in our school and we will be monitoring this diligently. Remember, it is not only for the safety of our children, but protection for yourself. Our students have also been instruct-ed to look for these.

Also when signing in please sign in your toddlers too, just in case of emergency.

STUDENT SUPERVISION

Please be aware that staff are on yard duty in the playground from 8:45 am before school and until 3:45 pm after school. Students travelling on late buses are supervised in the Multi Purpose Room after school until the final bus leaves. For your own child’s safety it is recommended that children do not arrive at school before 8:45 am.

STUDENT INSURANCE

Please be aware that the Education Department does not cover students for accidents in the school grounds, nor does it cover for Ambulance costs should the need to call an ambulance be necessary. I would therefore encourage all families, to please consider making personal insurance and ambulance cover arrangements for all their children.

CHILD SAFE STANDARDS

Nar Nar Goon Primary School is committed to child safety. We want children to be safe, happy and empowered. We support and respect all children, as well as our staff and volunteers. We are committed to the safety, participation and empowerment of all children. We have zero tolerance of child abuse, and all allegations and safety concerns will be treated very seriously and consistently with our robust policies and procedures. If you would like more information please go to the ‘Wellbeing’ or ‘Policies’ tab on our website where you will find our Child Safe Policy and/or further information and resources go to: www.education.vic.gov.au/ protect

FEEDBACK

Your feedback is important to us. If you have a concern or would like to raise a complaint as a parent, please speak to the classroom teacher in the first instance, Team leader in the second instance (ie: Foundation: Jodie Watt, Years 1-2: Ryan Marsland, Years 3-4 Daniel Mason, Years 5/6: Jackie L).

Otherwise, please contact the Principal Mrs Fran Van Lambaart or Assistant Principal Jacqui Cutler, by calling the office to arrange an appointment.

VISITING THE SCHOOL

We would respectfully ask that every person who comes onto the school grounds between the hours of 9:15am and 3:15pm does so through the main office to ensure that we know who is on the school grounds at all times. We would ask for your cooperation as parents to ensure that if you have a message for your child or an item that needs to be delivered to the classroom that you ask the office staff to pass it on rather than interrupt the class and/or the teacher during instruction time. Anyone without a WWCC lanyard or Visitors badge will be redirected to the front office.

MEDICATION AT SCHOOL

Often we are asked to administer medication for students at school and if provided with the correct written information and parent signatures, we are more than happy to do so. Students know (and parents need to be aware) that any medication brought to school must be kept in the Sick Bay, not in classrooms or student school bags. In order to administer medication correctly we are seeking parent support to ensure the medication provided to staff does not fall beyond the expiry date provided on medication packets/bottles. We will notify you when the medication is due to expire. Please support us in our endeavours to keep your children safe and healthy.
