Datacenter releases are not supported for Configuration Manager v.Next Beta 1.

2

Clients are supported on Server Core installations of Windows Server 2008 and on full installations of Windows Server 2008. However, Settings Management, Software Center, Configuration Manager client UI and out of band management are supported only on full installations of Windows Server 2008 for Beta 1.

NOTE: No Windows Embedded versions are supported for Beta 1.

For server platforms, the client support is independent of any other service operating on that server (e.g. domain controller, cluster services, or terminal services) unless otherwise stated.

Console sessions controlled by Remote Assistance are supported, except for simultaneous use of Configuration Manager Remote Tools. For example, do not simultaneously use Remote Assistance and remote control on the same client. From the Configuration Manager console, there is no limitation for Remote Assistance and remote control when accessing different clients.

The Configuration Manager remote control viewer is not supported on Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008 platforms.

Fast User Switching (available in Windows XP in Workgroup machines) is not supported in ConfigMgr v.Next. It is supported for Vista OS versions.

1 Site system roles are not supported on a Server Core installation of Windows Server 2008. Additionally, you must perform some manual configuration steps for some site system roles that are running Windows Server 2008. For more

information, see How to Configure Windows Server 2008 for Site Systems. 2 Note that standard distribution points support Windows Server 2003 (including 32-bit), although some feature limitations (e.g. BranchCache) might apply. Branch distribution points are supported on Configuration Manager v.Next client operating systems (including 32-bit operating systems).

SQL Server

SQL Server related requirements for Configuration Manager v.Next:

 Configuration Manager v.Next must run its own instance of SQL Server and it cannot be shared with other applications. Configuration Manager v.Next has specific security requirements that might conflict with other applications if you use the same instance for other applications.

 The SQL Server used with Configuration Manager v.Next requires at minimum, a 64-bit version of SQL Server 2008. Any other SQL Server that is being used for database replication with Configuration Manager v.Next also requires at minimum, a 64-bit version of SQL Server 2008.

 SQL Server named instances are supported for all the different types of sites in

Configuration Manager v.Next (central administration site, primary site, secondary site). However, while default instances in SQL Server are automatically configured to use a static port of 1433, named instances default to using dynamic ports. Dynamic ports are not supported. When using named instances, you must use SQL Server Configuration Manager to reconfigure the named instance to use a static port of 1433. Additionally, each Configuration Manager v.Next site requires its own instance of SQL Server, which cannot be co-located on the same computer with another instance of SQL Server that is also being used for Configuration Manager. For example, do not use a single computer that is running SQL Server for both the central administration site and a primary site.

 SQL Server 2008 Express is supported on secondary sites. A default version of SQL Server 2008 Express is installed during the setup process for a secondary site.

 SQL Server 2008 R2 is not supported for Beta 1.

 SQL Server standard and integrated security is supported.

 The site server and SQL Server must reside in the same Active Directory domain.

 SQL Server instances must be configured for case-insensitive collation.

1.5

Supported Configurations

The following configurations are not support with this beta version of Configuration Manager v.Next:

 Multiple forests

 Multiple domains

 SQL Server clusters

 Network load balancing (NLB) site systems (management points and software update points)

 SQL Server replicas for the management point

(7)

In Beta 1, only English site server is supported for your ConfigMgr v.Next hierarchy and we only support migration from an English ConfigMgr 2007 site.
