1. Introduction

Flash Memory Toolkit combines a wide range of functions which allows you to get the most out of your flash memory card or USB stick.

The key features are:

• Fast and accurate file recovery

• Secure erase function, wipes entire contents • Extensive error checking

• Backup function, create bit-by-bit identical copies • Measure raw and file performance

• Detailed device and USB information

• Language support: English, German and Dutch

(4)

2. Requirements

• Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows XP 64-bit, Windows Vista • 10 MB of free disk space

• Flash memory card or USB stick

(5)

3. Usage

To use Flash Memory Toolkit select a device from the list (if you have more than one device attached) and select a function by clicking on the left icon menu.

Flash Memory Toolkit automatically detects new devices. To rescan all devices press the refresh icon button.

The Format button brings up the standard format function from Windows. By clicking on the Screenshot button you can save a screenshot of the program.

4. Functions

4.1.Info

The Info function shows various interesting information such as: detailed device capacity, file system, operating system and USB configuration.

By clicking on an entry in the USB configuration list you can see more details about the USB hub or USB device.

To rescan the USB device information press the Refresh button.

(7)

4.2.Error Scan

With the Error Scan function you can check the device for errors. You can perform a read test or a write test (or both).

If both tests are selected, Error Scan will first write predefined data on the device (write test) and then read and verify the data (read test).

You can also select the number of passes.

Using this function is recommended after a new purchase or if you experience problems with the device.

Note: after performing a write test it's recommended to format the flash memory device.

4.3.Eraser

When files are deleted from a memory card or USB stick, the data is not actually erased. Only the references to those files are deleted.

By using file recovery software such as Flash Memory Toolkit it will be possible to recover many or all files after the files have been deleted or even after a full format. So if you sell, return, lend or give away your memory card/USB stick someone may be able to recover sensitive data from the device.

The full erase option ensures your data is erased permanently. The quick erase function is a very fast way to remove the file system.

4.4.File Recovery

The File Recovery function is one of the most advanced functions of Flash Memory Toolkit. It allows you to recover files which have been lost by accidentely deleting them or by a hardware failure.

Usage:

Select which file format you want to recover. You can also choose to recover all supported file formats.

Press the Scan button. Flash Memory Toolkit will scan the device for files and show them in the listbox.

After the scan has completed, place a checkmark with the files you want to recover and press the Recover button. You will be asked for a folder where you want to save the files. Note: do not save the files to the device you're recovering files from.

Right-clicking on the file list will pop up a menu which allows you to select or deselect all items. There is also a function to show a preview of the graphical image files (jpeg, gif, png, tiff and bmp).

Currently the following file formats are supported: Image files

Compuserve GIF (GIF) Jpeg file (JPG)

Portable Network Graphics (PNG) Tagged Image File Format (TIF) Windows bitmap (BMP)

Video files

AVCHD video (MTS) Mpeg video (MPG) QuickTime movie (MOV) Windows Media Video (WMV) Windows video (AVI)

Audio files

Mpeg audio (MP3) Waveform Audio (WAV)

Windows Media Audio (WMA) Office files

(10)

Excel spreadsheet (XLS) Portable Document File (PDF) Powerpoint presentation (PPT) Powerpoint slideshow (PPS) Word document (DOC) Archive files

Rar archive (RAR) Zip archive (ZIP)

(11)

4.5.Backup

This function makes a bit-by-bit identical copy of your memory card or USB stick and stores it on a hard drive or other storage medium.

(12)

4.6.Low-level Benchmark

The low-level benchmark measures the read and/or write performance of your flash memory device. The speed is shown in MB/s (1 MB = 1024 KB = 1048576 bytes). The average access time is also measured.

(13)

4.7.File Benchmark

The file benchmark measures how long it takes to read or write a file with a specific length.
