Reusable instruments must be thoroughly decontaminated before being re-sterilised and used again. If cleaning protocols are not closely followed, there is an increased risk of onward transmission prion-mediated diseases, such as vCJD.

Single use instruments significantly reduce the risk of cross infection as each instrument is new and unused. Therefore there is no risk of contamination by blood, tissue, bacteria, viruses or prions. Every instrument goes through the sterilisation process and is guaranteed sterile. It is a legal requirement for all medical devices to comply with the Medical Devices Directive (MDD) 93/42 EEC, (from 26

May 2020 the EU regulation on medical devices (MDR) 2017/745), and carry the CE mark. Regulatory requirements differ according to the risk attached to the use of the product. The lower the risk, the easier it is to comply with the Directive.

Single use instruments are relatively high risk as many are surgically invasive and therefore classified as lla devices. They are therefore subject to greater levels of control than reusables (which are Class l devices except those used on central nervous tissue or the cardio vascular system). Class l devices can be sold without any authorisation from an independent third party - a Notified Body. Class lla devices such as Instrapac

^®

require a Notified Body to assess the production of the device to the relevant conformity assessment procedure specified in the Directive or Regulation (e.g. Annex II, IV, V or VI of the MDD), and issue a certificate of conformance before a CE mark can be applied and the product sold.

Certification by the British Standards Institution (BSI) verifies that Instrapac

products meet fully the requirements of the Directive.

UK Production Facility

Robinson Healthcare retain control over the production of Instrapac

^®

products by designing the products, specifying production methods and quality control procedures, inspecting finished product and packing and sterilising at the company’s large manufacturing facility in Worksop, UK. A large Class 7 cleanroom provides hygienic packing facilities, with sterilisation carried out at an EO gas sterilisation facility in the UK.

Products comply with the relevant British Standards for surgical instruments and the quality control team ensure that products meet specification before being released for packing. All metal products are manufactured using medical grade stainless steel.

The Instrapac

^®

range is packaged in high quality, easy to peel packs. All procedure packs are presented wrapped in a sterile field for convenience.

Robinson Healthcare fully understands that a consistent and reliable supply of quality products is critical to the smooth and efficient running of healthcare services. Consequently, significant stocks of finished goods and raw materials are held to maintain a reliable, uninterrupted supply to customers.

After use, instruments should be placed in a sharps container, following the guidance in HTM07.01. Orange lidded containers offer a much wider range of options for the recycler, rendering the instrument safe by alternative methods other than incineration.

This method enables recycling and reduces landfill.
