The BAKIP Graz is one of 29 Bundesbildungsanstalten für Kindergartenpädagogik (nursery teacher training col-leges) across Austria and it offers a 5-year form and a 4-semester post-secondary VET course.
General educational objective
Nursery teacher training colleges (Bildungsanstalten für
Kindergartenpädagogik) aim to convey a sound general
education (this applies to the 5-year college) as well as the skills and abilities required for professional pedagogical work in the occupational area of nursery school (kindergarten) and after-school day-care facilities (upon completion of the additional training for childcare workers at after-school day-care facilities) and (this applies to the 5-year colleges) lead to university entrance qualifications at the same time. Graduates have developed the following personality traits and demonstrate the general and specific job-related competences specified below:
Personality traits:
value consciousness (awareness of ethical, religious and social values as the basis of a general value system), sensitivity and openness to philosophical and existential as well as religious issues particularly regarding children,
responsibility, readiness to take responsibility for one’s own actions, and critical capabilities,
sensitivity for culture- and gender-specific aspects of education and socialisation,
openness for innovation, flexibility and mobility,
readiness to independently acquire knowledge and take part in continuing and further education and training, ability and readiness to reflect own actions and their preconditions.

General job-specific competences:
fundamental philosophical, ethical and religious competence, linguistic competence,
social competence, particularly empathy, the ability to deal with the emotions of oneself and other persons, the ability to deal with conflicts,
communicative skills (presentation, teamwork, cooperation with establishments of institution-based pedagogy, public relations work),
performance competence (rhetoric, moderation of groups, project management) and creative competence.
Special competences for professional requirements:
the knowledge of how to implement, in educational work, main pedagogical, psychological and sociological explanations particularly regarding the development in (early) childhood and its framework conditions appropriate to the situation,
the competence to strengthen philosophical, ethical and religious ideas, specific to children, of the autonomy of human development in the search for meaning,
the ability to plan, organise and evaluate person-, age-group- and task-related educational work (e.g. of measures related to intercultural learning, gender-sensitive pedagogy, the specific support of children with a need for special pedagogic support and their integration, health management in the sense of preventive health care and education for a healthy lifestyle),
the ability to counsel parents and legal guardians appropriate to the situation,
special knowledge of the fundamental legal aspects of the profession in particular in the fields of safety, liability, hygiene, equipment, first aid, and traffic education,
competences related to the corporate organisation and management of institutional childcare facilities taking into account ecological and economic connections and using state-of-the-art technical equipment and quality management (quality development and assurance).

At these schools, also education and training for childcare workers at after-school day-care facilities is provided. At individual school locations, the pilot project of an advanced add-on training on Early Education is offered, which provides more specific qualifications for work with under-three-year-olds.
Training level: from school year 9
The 5-year college
leads to the professional qualification and university entrance qualifications (final certificate: Reifeprüfung Certificate and VET Diploma).
Entrance requirement:
Successful completion of the first 8 years of compulsory schooling and of an aptitude test.
Contents typical for the school type (apart from the general subjects, which also cover occupation-specific aspects): Pedagogy (including pedagogical psychology, pedagogical sociology, philosophy), orthopedagogy and special pedagogy, didactics, German (including speech training, children’s and young adults‘ literature), kindergarten practice, musical education, instrumental education, rhythmic and musical education, art, handicraft and textile design, movement education, physical exercise and sport, information management and media, seminar on organisation, management and law, seminar on nutrition with practical exercises.
Childcare workers at after-school day-care facilities additionally learn about the following areas: pedagogy/ school day-care facility, didactics of education at after-school day-care facilities, practice at after-after-school day-care facilities. Learning aid: German, modern foreign language, mathematics.
The 4-semester post-secondary course in VET
(which may be organised also as 5- or 6-semester forms for people under employment) leads to a professional qualification (final certificate: diploma). On the basis of the Reifeprüfung Certificate and VET Diploma, occupation-specific subjects are comparable to those of the 5-year course in terms of scope and content.
Entrance requirement:
Reifeprüfung Certificate, Reifeprüfung Certificate and VET Diploma, university entrance examination or Berufsreifeprüfung and successful completion of an aptitude test.
After basic training, students have the option of attending a course in special pedagogy for nursery teachers at some locations.
The 4-semester course in special pedagogy for nursery teachers
aims to train nursery teachers in special pedagogy for educational work with pre-school children (early assistance). It can be organised also as a course for people under employment (5 to 6 semesters). The diploma examination completes the training.
Entrance requirement:
successful completion of the training for nursery teachers.
