A LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

It was said that the outcome of the battle in Waterloo between the Duke of Wellington and Napoleon Bonaparte was conveyed through semaphore, a system of signaling that makes use of flags or lights. The message was sent from a sailing ship that was on its way back to London. When the message reached the roof of Winchester Cathedral, it read through the heavy fog that almost covered the landscape: “Wellington defeated”. The citizens were devastated upon receiving this bad news, plunging their hearts into the deepest sadness. But when the fog cleared up, the rest of the message came through: “Wellington defeated the enemy.” Suddenly the citizens’

mourning turned into dancing and their deep sadness turned into euphoric rejoicing. There are simply no words able to describe the joy the people felt over the victory so happily won.

Similarly, this is the story of Holy Week. Good Friday is the partial message. Jesus is defeated. The whole message is received on Easter. The sadness of the disciples turns into joy at the Resurrection of the Lord. The only thing is that Easter is far greater than any story of victories in the world. It is because Easter is the story of victory over our ultimate and greatest enemy: Death. The Resurrection of the Lord affirms that death does not have the last say in our existence. Because of Easter, we are meant for more than this present life and are not anchored to this world. Human life is no longer limited by the cycle of birth and death. It is all because Christ has shared the gift of His life with us through Baptism and His Resurrection blazed the trail for us to follow; that is, through His mercy and by living out faithfully our baptismal vows. Easter is the answer to all the tears we shed at the graves of our loved ones. It reminds us that we have a future greater than we dare to believe in. We too will experience the

Resurrection. Thus, Easter is a turning point inviting us to live in an entirely new way that goes beyond the limitations of this world. We are challenged to become part of the new creation, inspired by the life of God. The Gospel tells us that on the first Easter morning the stone at the entrance of Christ’s tomb was rolled back. The questions we must all face are: Have we arisen to new life with Christ, or are there still boulders weighing us down and keeping us imprisoned? What are the tombs in our lives that lock us in? What are those things that limit us? Is it resentment that we cannot let go? Is it a grudge that we keep harboring? Is it jealousy? Is it the inability to forgive? Is it an addiction over before which we feel so powerless? Whatever kind of dysfunctions we suffer, none of them can be more powerful than the hope that Easter brings. Easter announces that there is a way forward out of darkness, and transformation can truly take place in our lives. The Good News of Easter is that by God’s power, the boulders that hold us locked and buried can be rolled back and we can be set free. This can truly happen because Jesus Christ has risen from the dead, Alleluia, Alleluia! HAPPY EASTER!

Sincerely Yours In Christ, Fr. Burt Absalon, Pastor

St. Mary Football Program Seeking Sponsors

The St. Mary Youth Football Pro-gram, open to both boys and girls, has been in existence for over 96 years. The program is based on a strong faith and reli-ance on God, a commitment to best efforts in academics, and leadership skills.

This year, due to an increase in need for finan-cial assistance, we are looking for anyone who would be open to sponsoring a child who would like to participate in the football pro-gram, but cannot financially afford it.

Any recipient of the scholarship money would, in turn, perform volunteer hours at the parish. If you are interested in sponsorship, the cost would be $200. Please contact Dan Thompa-son through the program website: https:// www.stmaryfootball.com/

There is still time to donate to the 2020-2021 Dioc-esan Appeal, Hear His Voice (closes May 2021).

Can you help us close the gap and reach our goal?

Your donation supports people in need through Catholic Charities, the education of our youth in the Catholic faith, our diocesan seminarians, deacons and vocations, and even our parish, di-rectly, when we exceed our goal.

LOVE GOD. LOVE NEIGHBOR. GO MAKE DISCIPLES.

Saint Faustina: Mankind’s need for the message of Divine Mercy took on dire urgency in the 20th Century, when

civilization began to experience an “eclipse of the sense of God” and, therefore to lose the understanding of the sanctity and inherent dignity of human life. In the 1930s, Jesus chose a humble Polish nun, St. Maria Faustina Kow-alska, to receive private revelations concerning Divine Mercy that were recorded in her Diary. St. John Paul II ex-plains:

This was precisely the time when those ideologies of evil, nazism and communism, were taking shape. Sister Faustina became the herald of the one message capable of off-setting the evil of those ideolo-gies, that fact that God is mercy—the truth of the merciful Christ. And for this reason, when I was called to the See of Peter, I felt impelled to pass on those experiences of a fellow Pole that deserve a place in the treasury of the universal Church.

—Pope Saint John Paul II, Memory and Identity (2005)

On May 5, 2000, five days after the canonization of St. Faustina, the Vatican decreed that the Second Sunday of Easter would henceforth be known as Divine Mercy Sunday.

The Image: Jesus appeared to St. Faustina in a vision, with his right hand raised in a blessing and his left touching

his garment above his heart. Red and white rays emanate from his heart, symbolizing the blood and water that was poured out for our salvation and our sanctification. The Lord requested that “Jesus, I trust in You” be inscribed under his image. Jesus asked that his image be painted and venerated throughout the world: “I promise that the soul that will venerate this image will not perish” (Diary, no. 48) and “By means of this image I will grant many grac-es to souls” (Diary, no. 742).

The Chaplet of Divine Mercy: The Chaplet was also given to St. Faustina with this promise: “Encourage souls to say

the chaplet which I have given you” (Diary, no. 1541). “Whoever will recite it will receive great mercy at the hour of death. … Even if there were a sinner most hardened, if he were to recite this chaplet only once, he would re-ceive grace from My infinite mercy. I desire that the whole world know My infinite mercy” (Diary, no. 687). (Instructions for its recitation are provided on a separate page.)

The Divine Mercy Novena: Jesus gave St. Faustina nine intentions for which to pray the Chaplet beginning on

Good Friday and ending on the Saturday before Divine Mercy Sunday.

The above information was shared from the USCCB website.

Divine Mercy Sunday - April 11

St. Mary Divine Mercy Ceremony will take place at 3:00 pm in the church

What is mercy if not the boundless love of God, who, confronted with human sin, restrains the sentiment of severe justice and, allowing Himself to be moved by the wretchedness of His creatures, spurs Himself to the total gift of self, in the Son’s cross …?

Who can say that he is free from sin and does not need God’s mercy? As people of this rest-less time of ours, wavering between the emptiness of self-exaltation and the humiliation of despair, we have a greater need than ever for a regenerating experience of mercy.

—San Juan Pablo II, Memoria e iden-tidad (2005)

¡FELICES PASCUAS!
