Dear Graduates,

Today represents a milestone event in your life, for it is the culmination of your hard work and dedication over the past several years. It also represents the beginning of a new journey in your life. Whether that journey leads you back to campus to further your education, or into the workforce to put your skills to the test, it has been enhanced by your experience at ETSU.

Today, I encourage you to take a moment to reflect upon the experiences that brought you to this commencement ceremony. Undoubtedly, your own efforts have helped propel you onto this stage. The efforts and support of your family and loved ones, many of whom are with us today to celebrate your success, also played a key role in making today’s celebration possible. In all of the excitement that is graduation day, please do not forget to tell those individuals “thank you” for all that they have done and continue to do to support your endeavors.

I also encourage you to show your appreciation to the faculty and staff who helped you achieve your degree. We are proud of your accomplishments and look forward to hearing where your footprints lead in the coming years. Be sure to stay connected with ETSU and our National Alumni Association.

Additionally, I hope that you can return to campus to take in a performance, attend Homecoming or just walk through our beautiful grounds.

Finally, as you realize this dream of a college degree, I ask that you always share with others the importance of higher education. It is through the power of higher education that we can make the biggest difference in our own lives, our communities, and the world.

Congratulations on this outstanding accomplishment.

Godspeed and go Bucs!

Dr. Brooks Pond, a professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, joined East Tennessee State University Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy as a founding faculty member in 2007 and has participated in didactic teaching of students within the College of Pharmacy and the Biomedical Science Ph.D. program.

Her teaching accomplishments have been recognized by both her students and her peers. She is the 2020 recipient of ETSU’s highest teaching honor – the Distinguished Faculty Award in Teaching. For more than a decade, she has instructed and coordinated the Human Physiology course, a major foundational course for student pharmacists. In addition, Pond teaches pharmacology associated with several courses in the second and third years of the pharmacy curriculum.

She has been selected four times as the Gatton College of Pharmacy

Teacher of the Year and has been recognized by her college peers when she was named Outstanding Teacher in 2015. Most recently, she was selected as a Teaching and Learning Peer Consultant by the ETSU Center for Teaching Excellence.

Pond also has received accolades from her students over the years. Each year, the Gatton College of Pharmacy graduating class selects a faculty member who has been most influential on their education to serve as a

“faculty hooder” at graduation. Pond has received this honor six times, more than any other Gatton faculty member.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the student experience has been different than in the past, and Pond and her colleagues have had to adapt to changes and technology in the classroom in order to connect with them.

Through her experience in teaching online courses during COVID-19, Pond has studied best practices and developed some of her own techniques for keeping student pharmacists engaged and accountable in a virtual format. She has adapted one of her favorite teaching methods, known as Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning, or POGIL, to the online classroom by utilizing break-out rooms where student pharmacists can work on activities in small groups. Pond makes her rounds to each group virtually, just as she would in the physical classroom, and has been pleased with the initiative and engagement among the students.

In addition to her teaching, Pond contributes to the service and research missions at Gatton. Her research focuses on psychostimulants’ long-term effects on the brain, and she has opened her research lab to all types of students, including high school, undergraduate, pharmacy and Ph.D.

students. During her tenure, she has mentored 51 student pharmacists through research projects.

Pond earned a B.S. in biochemistry and molecular biology at Centre College in 2000 and a Ph.D. in pharmacology and certificate in cell molecular biology at Duke University in 2004. She also completed a postdoctoral research fellowship at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Dr. Wilsie S. Bishop came to ETSU as a temporary faculty member in the College of Nursing in 1978. Since that time, she earned tenure and

progressed through the faculty ranks, serving in administrative roles including department chair, dean, and assistant/associate vice president prior to

becoming a vice president in 2005. While serving in various administrative roles, she has continued to be a classroom teacher as well as a mentor for doctoral and graduate students.

Throughout her career at ETSU, Bishop has observed and been a part of many important changes at the university. After 11 years of serving as Dean of the College of Public and Allied Health, Bishop was appointed Vice President for Administration and Chief Operating Officer of the university in 2005.

This role took her out of the academic arena and into university operations when she assumed responsibility for Athletics, Facilities Planning, Human Resources, Information Technology, Public Safety and Student Affairs.

However, her academic background provided a context for decision-making and communication with faculty and staff that was invaluable for her and in many ways for the university.

In 2007, she transitioned to Vice President for Health Affairs, becoming the first non-physician to hold the VPHA title. In this position, she embraced and led the university’s Interprofessional Education Initiative (IPE) and the team- based care that it embodied as the future of quality health care delivery. Through the IPE efforts, ETSU not only created opportunities for shared classroom experiences, but was able to create a building where team-based learning is the priority and students can work and study together in preparation for their future careers as health care providers. The Interprofessional Education and Research Center (Building 60) on the Veterans Administration campus is a physical symbol of vision becoming reality.

Bishop also oversaw the launch of the ETSU Health brand in 2019, which unified the educational, clinical and research pursuits of ETSU’s five health sciences colleges, more than 250 providers and 35 clinical sites.

In her most recent role as Senior Vice President for Academics and Interim Provost, Bishop has focused on bringing together under one management umbrella the academic affairs and health affairs colleges of the university.

Bishop received her Doctor of Public Administration degree from the University of Southern California from which she also earned a Masters of Public Administration and a Masters of Education. She holds a Masters of Nursing and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Virginia Commonwealth University. She has been recognized by both of her alma maters for her career achievements. In 2013, she was inducted into the Tennessee Women’s Hall of Fame.

Active in peer review accreditation, in 2019, Dr. Bishop received the James T. Rogers Distinguished Leadership Award from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, the highest award given by the Commission.

Bishop plans to retire on June 30, 2021 after 43 years of service at ETSU.
