Mission Statement

Deepen relationships with our neighbors so we can grow in Christ together

A cordial welcome to all!

Welcome to Cross of Christ! We invite you to sign our guest book in the narthex at the

entrance of the church. Those who are able are encouraged to follow the directions for sitting, standing and turning as they appear in this bulletin. If you need any assistance during the service, the ushers are here to serve you.

Purpose Statement

Deepen relationships with our neighbors so we can grow in Christ together.

Church facilities

Restrooms are available down the hallway on the left side. There is a baby changing table in each restroom.

Classrooms are located along the far side of the Fellowship Hall.

The Fellowship Hall is available for rental. For details, please call the church office.

A Large-print Bulletin is available from the usher.

Families

We believe that children of all ages belong in worship. They are a welcomed part of the assembly and we enjoy hearing them as well as seeing them. There are Children’s bulletins along with crayons at the back of the sanctuary. If you find it helpful, feel free to move around the sanctuary or stand in the back to help soothe your child. If you find it necessary to leave the worship space for a short time, the middle classroom off of the Fellowship Hall has a rocking chair. The service can be heard through a speaker system. Please return as soon as you feel comfortable. Children and youth of all ages are also encouraged to participate in worship leadership roles when parents feel they are ready. If you need assistance for any reason, please don’t hesitate to ask an Usher or the Council Person on duty.

+ The Holy Communion +

James tells us to stop showing favoritism in the assembly, treating the rich visitor with more honor than the poor one. Jesus himself seems to show partiality in his first response to the Syrophoenician woman in today’s gospel. Was he testing her faith in saying Gentiles don’t deserve the goods meant for God’s children? Or was he speaking out of his human world view, but transcended those limits when she took him by surprise with her reply? Either way, the story tells us that God shows no partiality. Everyone who brings his or her need to Jesus is received with equal honor as a child and heir.

The color for the Sundays after Pentecost is green, which represents growth.

The Holy Spirit gathers us in unity on the first day of the week, the day of Christ’s resurrection. PRELUDE “Make Me A Servant” by Kelly Willard

CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS

All may make the sign of the cross, the sigh that is marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins.

Assembly stands.

Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, whose teaching is life, whose presence is sure, and whose love is endless. Amen.

Let us confess our sins to the one who welcomes us with an open heart.

Silence for reflection.

God our comforter: like lost sheep, we have gone astray. We gaze upon abundance and see scarcity. We turn our faces away from injustice and

oppression. We exploit the earth with our apathy and greed. Free us from our sin, gracious God. Listen when we call out to you for help. Lead us by your love to love our neighbors as ourselves. Amen.

All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. By the gift of grace in  Christ Jesus, God makes you righteous. Receive with glad hearts the forgiveness of all your sins. Amen.

Word

First Reading,a reading from Isaiah. (Isaiah 35:4-7a)

Say to those who are of a fearful heart, “Be strong, do not fear! Here is your God.

He will come with vengeance, with terrible recompense. He will come and save you.” Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf

unstopped; then the lame shall leap like a deer, and the tongue of the speechless sing for joy. For waters shall break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert; the burning sand shall become a pool, and the thirsty ground springs of water.

The Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

Psalm 146,read responsively.

Praise the Lord!

Praise the Lord, O my soul!

I will praise the Lord as long as I live;

I will sing praises to my God all my life long.

Do not put your trust in princes,

in mortals, in whom there is no help.

When their breath departs, they return to the earth;

on that very day their plans perish.

Happy are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord their God,

who made heaven and earth,

the sea, and all that is in them;

who keeps faith for ever;

who executes justice for the oppressed;

who gives food to the hungry.

The Lord sets the prisoners free;

the Lord opens the eyes of the blind.

The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down;

the Lord loves the righteous.

The Lord watches over the strangers;

he upholds the orphan and the widow,

but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin.

(7)

The Lord will reign for ever,

your God, O Zion, for all generations.

Praise the Lord!

Second Reading,a reading from James. (James 2:1-17)

My brothers and sisters, do you with your acts of favoritism really believe in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ? For if a person with gold rings and in fine clothes

comes into your assembly, and if a poor person in dirty clothes also comes in, and if you take notice of the one wearing the fine clothes and say, “Have a seat here,

please,” while to the one who is poor you say, “Stand there,” or, “Sit at my feet,”

have you not made distinctions among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts? Listen, my beloved brothers and sisters. Has not God chosen the poor in the world to be rich in faith and to be heirs of the kingdom that he has promised to those who love him? But you have dishonored the poor. Is it not the rich who oppress you? Is it not they who drag you into court? Is it not they who blaspheme the excellent name that was invoked over you? You do well if you really fulfill the royal law according to the scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

But if you show partiality, you commit sin and are convicted by the law as

transgressors. For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become accountable for all of it. For the one who said, “You shall not commit adultery,”

also said, “You shall not murder.” Now if you do not commit adultery but if you murder, you have become a transgressor of the law. So speak and so act as those who are to be judged by the law of liberty. For judgment will be without mercy to anyone who has shown no mercy; mercy triumphs over judgment. What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but do not have works? Can faith save you? If a brother or sister is naked and lacks daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and eat your fill,” and yet you do not supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that? So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead.

The Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

Assembly stands.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Alleluia.

Lord, to whom shall we go?

You have the words of eternal life.

Alleluia.

HOLY GOSPEL (Mark 7:24-37)

The Holy Gospel according to Mark, the 7th chapter.

Glory to you, O Lord!

Jesus set out and went away to the region of Tyre. He entered a house and did not want anyone to know he was there. Yet he could not escape notice, but a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit immediately heard about him, and she came and bowed down at his feet. Now the woman was a Gentile, of

Syrophoenician origin. She begged him to cast the demon out of her daughter. He said to her, “Let the children be fed first, for it is not fair to take the children’s food and throw it to the dogs.” But she answered him, “Sir, even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.” Then he said to her, “For saying that, you may go—the demon has left your daughter.” So she went home, found the child lying on the bed, and the demon gone. Then he returned from the region of Tyre, and went by way of Sidon towards the Sea of Galilee, in the region of the Decapolis. They brought to him a deaf man who had an impediment in his speech; and they begged him to lay his hand on him. He took him aside in private, away from the crowd, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spat and touched his tongue. Then looking up to heaven, he sighed and said to him, “Ephphatha,” that is, “Be opened.” And

immediately his ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly.

Then Jesus ordered them to tell no one; but the more he ordered them, the more zealously they proclaimed it. They were astounded beyond measure, saying, “He has done everything well; he even makes the deaf to hear and the mute to speak.”

The Gospel of the Lord Praise to you, O Christ!

HYMN OF THE DAY “Healer of Our Every Ill” ELW #612 vs. 2 & 3

*APOSTLES CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord.

He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary.

He suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended to the dead. On the third day He rose again.

He ascended into heaven,

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit;

the holy catholic church, the communion of saints;

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSIONS

Prayers reflect the wideness of God’s mercy for the whole world.

Made children and heirs of God’s promise, we pray for the church, the world, and all in need.

A brief silence.

Holy One, you bring your people together in worship. Enliven your church. Guide all evangelists, preachers, prophets, and missionaries who seek to share your love through word and deed. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

You provide water for thirsty ground and sunshine to feed hungry plants. Bless all who advocate for healthy forests, unpolluted air, and clean waterways. Inspire all people to show care for the world you have made. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

You show no partiality. Increase justice in all nations. Encourage leaders and governments to work with one another for the good of our common world.

(Especially as we celebrate Labor Day,) unite us in seeking the health, safety, and dignity of all. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

You accompany those who are most in need. Shelter all fleeing natural disasters or human sin and violence or persecution, protect any who are in danger, and sustain them through uncertain and unstable times. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

You support the work of your disciples. Continue to nurture the leadership and ministries of this congregation. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

You may now offer the prayers of your heart, whether silently or spoken (brief silence). Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

You embrace all who have died in the faith and brought them into your glorious presence. We thank you for their example and rejoice in their lives. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Receive these prayers, O God, and those in our hearts known only to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

PEACE

The peace of the Lord be with you always. And also with you.

Assembly remains standing.

OFFERTORY “Give Thanks”

(12)

OFFERING PRAYER

Let us pray. (Silence for reflection and meditation)

God of abundance, you cause streams to break forth in the desert and manna to rain from the heavens. Accept the gifts you have first given us. Unite them with the offering of our lives to nourish the world you love so dearly; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

Amen.

Great Thanksgiving The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

Maker and redeemer of all, we lift our hearts to thank you, because you open our ears to hear your voice and release our tongue to sing your praise. You created the earth as a place of

encounter between you and your creatures. You called your people from slavery and wilderness to covenant and abundant life. You gave your children manna to share, and from the crumbs that fell from their table you made a banquet to welcome the Gentiles to the joy of your

companionship. You made the body of your crucified and risen Son the altar of your mercy and of our redemption. And so we zealously proclaim the triumphs of your grace, joining with the angels and archangels and the company of heaven in the hymn of your eternal glory.

Holy, holy holy, Lord, God of pow’r and might, Holy, holy holy, Lord, God of pow’r and might,

Heaven and earth are full, full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest, hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest, hosanna in the highest.

Life-giving God, you share your bread with the poor, and you make this banquet the place where in the power of your Spirit we are united as one body in your Son. Make this meal a moment of reconciliation between you and your people, and let those who share in it be ambassadors of reconciliation within your wounded world. Send your Holy Spirit upon this bead and this cup, that they may be for us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ.

On the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.

(13)

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.

Great is the mystery of faith.

Christ has died; Christ has risen; Christ will come again.

God of the afflicted, you have chosen the poor in the world to be rich in faith and to be heirs of the kingdom that you have promised to those who love you. Make your church rich as you are rich, in compassion and mercy, in wisdom and grace; and make your people poor as you are poor, in sharing the calamity of those who endure injustice and knowing the pain of all who live with the world’s anger. Take away the mask of poverty, that all may see with joy the riches of those the world calls poor, and remove the mask of wealth, that all may see with love the

poverty of those the world calls rich. Hasten the day when your gentle mercy triumphs over the world’s harsh judgment, and all find a place at the feast of your kingdom, ever one God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.

Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen

COMMUNION

Our Lord’s body and blood are truly present in the bread and wine to forgive and strengthen us. We practice open communion: all Baptized Christians are welcome to commune with us. White grape juice is available at communion for those who prefer it. It is located in the center ring of each tray of glasses.

Gluten free wafers are available. Please indicate to the pastor during distribution if you would rather have gluten free wafers. If you prefer communion at your seat, please let one of our ushers know. In preparation for receiving the Sacrament, a simple prayer such as this or another appropriate prayer may be said “May the Blood of Christ bring me everlasting life.”

INVITATION TO COMMUNION

All who hunger and thirst, come. The table is ready.

Assembly sits.
