Can We Help?

Home/School collaboration is a major key to student success. Situations will certainly arise in the course of the school year in which a parent will want to call the school. Most times, the first call should be made directly to the classroom teachers, since the teacher will most likely have the information needed, and they work directly with your child.

If after calling the teacher, there are still unresolved concerns, please contact the principal via a phone call to the main office or email:

When calling the school, please realize teachers and administrators are working with students during school hours. Unless the phone message states that there is an urgent, emergency situation, most phone calls will be returned after the children are dismissed.

All parent concerns are of utmost concern to the school, and will always be handled as such.

Dear Parents, Students, and Community Members:

I hope that everyone is having a rejuvenating summer filled with many enjoyable activities with your families. This is always an exciting time of the year as our staff prepares to welcome students and parents for the commencement of school. I am so very excited to continue to serve the River community in the capacity of Principal. On behalf of the River Elementary staff, I would like to welcome you to the 2021-2022 school year.

We will continue to promote a child-centered approach to teaching our students and will equip them with the skills to navigate their emotions, attitudes, decision making and establish positive relationships.

Academically, this school year we will implement a consistent, compre- hensive reading and writing approach in grades Kindergarten through Fifth Grade using a balanced literacy approach to reading and writing.

We will continue to enrich and support our future mathematicians and scientists through STEM activities and events. My Math is the math program that we will be continuing with in Grades Kindergarten through Third and implementing in Grades Fourth and Fifth this year.

We look forward to feedback from students and parents regarding this program.

You will quickly see that our fabulous custodial staff has worked very hard to make River Elementary look incredibly beautiful. They have spent the summer moving furniture, waxing floors and shampooing car- pets in preparation for your arrival. Our secretarial staff have made sure that all of the necessary documentation are in place for the start of the school year.

All Visitors

All exterior doors remain locked throughout the school day. All visitors must enter through the Main Entrance to be able to enter our school. In order to maintain a safe environment for our students, visitors are required to show proper photo identification in order to receive a visitor pass to conduct any business in the building. Visitors without photo identification will not be allowed to enter the building.

All visitors must return their pass before leaving the building.

Front Entrance /Arrival /Dismissal

Safety Change and Procedures

Please pay close attention to the markings in front of our building.

These were put in to address safety concerns. We have added a painted crosswalk directly in front of the school. State law asks all motorists to stop for any pedestrian in the crosswalk and please adhere to speed limits. At arrival and dismissal, drop off and pick up will only be permitted outside of the designated safety zone directly in front of the building. For the safety of our children, parents may not be allowed in the Main Lobby after 3:00 p.m.

Student Early Release

If your child needs to be released from school early, please follow these important guidelines:

 Please send in a note with your child if an early release is planned.

 Immediately upon arrival to school, your child will give the note to the their teacher.

 In order for your child to be released to anyone other than a parent/guardian, that person MUST be listed as an emergency contact on the Emergency Contact Card and also on the Parent Portal. This is non-negotiable.

 Any adult withdrawing a student must show a photo identification card. This in non-negotiable.

 No child will be released until the adult comes into the building with a photo identification and that is on the Emer- gency list and officially signs the child out.

Parent Portal (VERY IMPORTANT)

All parents must access the website to electronically complete and/or update the Emergency Contact information. Please go to www.pmschools.org and click on the Parent Portal link and follow the instructions. If you need assistance, please call River Main Office @ 631-687-8350 or the Family Center @ 631-687-6750.

Legal Papers

If you have any legal papers regarding any issue that you feel the school should be aware of, please be sure to submit a copy for our records to the office of Registration located in the Saxton Middle School.

Breakfast/Lunch Program

Each morning your child will receive a healthy well balanced break- fast at no cost to your family. The Free and Reduced Lunch form can be completed on the internet (only one form per family needs to be completed per year). The Lunch form can be found at

pmschools.schoollunchapp.com.

Paper copies are available in the Main Office upon request.

My School Bucks (www.myschoolbucks.com) is the simple way to pay for school meals. This will allow you to do following:

 On-line prepayment service for parents

 Ability to monitor your child’s purchasing habits

 Ability to place restrictions on your child’s spending

Food Service has provided your child with a four-digit Personal Iden- tification Number (PIN), which your child is required to learn. This number should never be shared with other students.

Electronic Devices

Students are not to use any electronic device (cell phones, I-Pods, smart watches, etc.) while in school. We realize that most students have cell phones for emergency situations, however, we ask that the cell phone be secured during the school day. If your child is not feel- ing well, they should report to the nurse. If necessary, the nurse will contact you or your designated contact person. There is a telephone in the main office for student use during lunch periods and before and after school for emergency purposes only. Teachers have been instructed to confiscate a cell phone that is being used in class or in the cafeteria. Cell phones will not be returned to students. It will be the responsibility of the parent to come to the Main Office to col- lect the cell phone and sign for it.

Family Center

The district will continue to provide assistance to the Patchogue- Medford families through the Family Center which is located at Sax- ton Middle School. Their purpose will be to provide physical and emotional support to families in our community. For information call (631) 687-6750 or e-mail [email protected].

Transportation

As per district policy, students may only take their assigned bus. If a parent has made regular babysitting arrangements to be in a home within the River Elementary area, a new bus pass may be issued. A Transportation Childcare Form must be forwarded to the Transportation Office for approval. Students may not go home on a friend’s bus at any time.

River’s Website

Please become familiar with and use River’s website. This page is loaded with information about our school, clubs, and activities. The website is updated daily and is highly accurate. Go to the District website, pmschools.org, click on River Elementary and you will be in touch with the latest from River Elementary. Daily announce- ments are also posted on the website everyday.

Before and After Care Program

River has its own before and after school child care program. The hours for the before-school session are 7:15 am to the start of the school and the after-school session begins at the close of the school until 6:00 pm. Interested parents should call Mrs. Tarabocchia at 631-687-8633.

District Wellness Policy

Please remember, as part of the adopted Board of Education Wellness Policy on Nutrition and Physical Activity #5158, food may no longer be used in the classroom, except as part of the curriculum or a snack brought from home for individual consumption. When choosing to celebrate for your child, consider alternate activities, such as a shared reading to the class for birthday and holiday celebrations or become a mystery reader in your child’s class. Although many parents would like to offer gift bags with treats for holiday celebrations including Halloween, Valentine’s Day, Christmas, Easter, etc., please note that these are not permitted. If food items are brought to school, parents will be called to pick them up.

Your support and cooperation in helping to collectively establish life-long healthy habits for your children is greatly appreciated.

Important Health Notice

All students and staff must adhere to the District’s Wellness Policy. The safety and health of all of our students is our priority. No food is permit- ted in class. With the number of potential food and allergy reactions, we must be vigilant, proactive and alert for everyone.

Testing Accommodation for Declassified Students

If your child has been declassified by the Committee on Special Education and has been approved for testing accommodations noted on his/her last IEP. Please be prepared to submit a copy of your child’s last IEP to sub- stantiate your child’s need for testing accommodations.

If you cannot provide documentation, please contact the Office of Pupil Services (631)687-6440. Personnel in Pupil Services will provide you with a copy of the exit documents. You will then need to submit the documents to the Main Office at River Elementary.

La colaboración entre el hogar y la escuela es una clave importante para el éxito de los estudiantes. Septiembre 2021

Estimados padres, estudiantes y miembros de la comunidad:

Espero que todos estén teniendo un verano rejuvenecedor lleno de muchas actividades agradables con sus familias. Este es siempre un momento emocionante del año, ya que nuestro personal se prepara para dar la bienvenida a los estudiantes y padres para el comienzo de la escuela.

Estoy muy emocionada de continuar sirviendo a la comunidad de River en calidad de directora. En nombre del personal de River Elementary, me gustaría darle la bienvenida al año escolar 2021-2022.

Continuaremos promoviendo un enfoque centrado en el niño para ense- ñar a nuestros estudiantes y los equiparemos con las habilidades para navegar por sus emociones, actitudes, toma de decisiones y establecer relaciones positivas.

Académicamente, este año escolar implementaremos un enfoque de lectura y escritura consistente e integral desde el jardín de infantes hasta el quinto grado utilizando un enfoque de alfabetización equilibrado para la lectura y la escritura. Continuaremos enriqueciendo y apoyando a nuestros futuros matemáticos y científicos a través de actividades y eventos STEM. My Math es el programa de matemáticas con el que continuaremos en los grados de jardín de infantes a tercero e implementaremos en los grados cuarto y quinto este año. Han pasado el verano moviendo muebles, encerando pisos y lavando alfombras con champú en preparación para su llegada. Todos los visitantes

Todas las puertas exteriores permanecen cerradas durante el día escolar. Todos los visitantes deben ingresar por la Entrada Principal para poder ingresar a nuestra escuela. Con el fin de mantener un ambiente seguro para nuestros estudiantes, los visitantes deben mostrar una iden- tificación con fotografía adecuada para recibir un pase de visitante para realizar cualquier negocio en el edificio. Los visitantes sin identifi- cación con fotografía no podrán ingresar al edificio. Todos los visitantes deben devolver su pase antes de salir del edificio.

Preste mucha atención a las marcas en frente de nuestro edificio. Estos se pusieron para abordar problemas de seguridad. Salida temprana del estudiante

Si su hijo necesita salir temprano de la escuela, siga estas pautas importantes:

 Envíe una nota con su hijo si se planea una salida anticipada

 Inmediatamente después de su llegada a la escuela, su hijo le da- rá la nota al maestro.

 Para que su hijo sea entregado a otra persona que no sea un pa- dre / tutor, esa persona DEBE estar incluida como contacto de emergencia en la Tarjeta de contacto de emergencia y también en el Portal para padres. Esto no es negociable.

 Cualquier adulto que retire a un estudiante debe mostrar una tar- jeta de identificación con fotografía. Esto no es negociable.

My School Bucks (www.myschoolbucks.com) es la forma más sencilla de pagar las comidas escolares. Esto le permitirá hacer lo siguiente:

 Servicio de prepago en línea para padres

 Capacidad para controlar los hábitos de compra de su hijo

 Capacidad de imponer restricciones a los gastos de su hijo.

Food Service le ha proporcionado a su hijo un número de identificación per- sonal (PIN) de cuatro dígitos, que su hijo debe aprender. Este número nunca debe compartirse con otros estudiantes..

Dispositivos electrónicos

Los estudiantes no deben usar ningún dispositivo electrónico (teléfonos celulares, I-Pods, relojes inteligentes, etc.) mientras estén en la escuela. Sa- bemos que la mayoría de los estudiantes tienen teléfonos celulares para situaciones de emergencia, sin embargo, les pedimos que los teléfonos celulares estén protegidos durante el día escolar. Si su hijo no se siente bien, debe in- formar a la enfermera. Si es necesario, la enfermera se comunicará con usted o con la persona de contacto designada. Hay un teléfono en la oficina prin- cipal para uso de los estudiantes durante los períodos de almuerzo y an- tes y después de la escuela solo para casos de emergencia. Los maestros han recibido instrucciones de confiscar un teléfono celular que se esté utilizando en la clase o en la cafetería. Los teléfonos celulares no se devolverán a los estudiantes. Será responsabilidad de los padres venir a la oficina principal para recoger el teléfono celular y firmar.

Centro Familiar

El distrito continuará brindando asistencia a las familias de Patchogue- Medford a través del Centro Familiar que se encuentra ubicada en la Escuela Intermedia Saxton. Transporte

Según la política del distrito, los estudiantes solo pueden tomar el autobús asignado. Si un padre ha hecho arreglos regulares de cuidado de niños para estar en una casa dentro del área de River El- ementary, se puede emitir un nuevo pase de autobús. Se debe enviar un formulario de transporte para el cuidado de niños a la oficina de transporte para su aprobación. Los estudiantes no pueden irse a casa en el autobús de un amigo en ningún momento.

Familiarícese y utilice el sitio web de River. Esta página está car- gada con información sobre nuestra escuela, clubes y actividades. El sitio web se actualiza a diario y es muy preciso. Vaya al sitio web del Distrito, pmschools.org, haga clic en River Elementary y estará en contacto con las últimas noticias de River Elementary. Los anun- cios diarios también se publican en el sitio web todos los días.

Programa de cuidados antes y después

River tiene su propio programa de cuidado infantil antes y después de la escuela. El horario de la sesión antes de la escuela es de 7:15 am hasta el inicio de la escuela y la sesión después de la escuela comienza al cierre de la escuela hasta las 6:00 pm. Si su hijo está ausente de la escuela, llame a nuestra

línea de asistencia al 631-687-8352 antes de las 9:10

am. Para ausencias prolongadas, de dos (2) o más días,

envíe una nota al maestro de su hijo.

Política de bienestar del distrito

Por favor recuerde, como parte de la Política de Bienestar de Nutrición y Actividad Física # 5158 adoptada por la Junta de Educación, la comida ya no se puede usar en el salón de clases, excepto como parte del plan de es- tudios o un refrigerio traído de casa para consumo individual. Cuando elija celebrar para su hijo, considere actividades alternativas, como una lectura compartida a la clase para las celebraciones de cumpleaños y días festivos o conviértase en un lector misterioso en la clase de su hijo. Aunque a muchos padres les gustaría ofrecer bolsas de regalo con golosinas para celebraciones navideñas como Halloween, San Valentín, Navidad, Pascua, etc., tenga en cuenta que no están permitidas. Si se traen alimentos a la escuela, se llamará a los padres para que los recojan..

Se agradece enormemente su apoyo y cooperación para ayudar a establecer colectivamente hábitos saludables de por vida para sus hijos.

Adaptación de prueba para estudiantes desclasificados

Si su hijo ha sido desclasificado por el Comité de Educación Especial y ha sido aprobado para las adaptaciones de prueba anotadas en su último IEP.

Esté preparado para enviar una copia del último IEP de su hijo para cor- roborar la necesidad de su hijo de adaptaciones para las pruebas..

Si no puede proporcionar documentación, comuníquese con la Oficina de Servicios Estudiantiles (631) 687-6440. El personal de Servicios Estudian- tiles le proporcionará una copia de los documentos de salida. Luego deberá enviar los documentos a la oficina principal de River Elementary.
