August 2021

Wait until you see all the pictures of activities that have happened in our community since last issue. It’s so good to be back to almost normal again, actually what is called the new normal. Meals out, golf cart parades, special events, WOW, I can hardly wait until the snowbirds fly back for things to really pick up. The pool has been busy and some of the games are flourishing. The members of the HOA are endeavoring to keep this momentum going. Thank you to all who help. Speaking of help, we in the HOA are looking for board members to fill empty slots. To discuss volunteering, contact any existing board member for information and we will be happy to fill you in. Also, along the help line, we need volunteers to open and close the pool when October comes. There is an article addressing that in this issue.

One further thing I wish to advise everyone in the community is about activities. Now that COVID has eased, the only thing stopping activities is someone to chair them. Have an idea? Willing to run with it? Indeed, do it! For help getting started contact our Event Coordinator, Connie Carpenter as listed in the Personnel Directory on page 3 and she will be glad to help you start and will also help you along the way. Remember, she is the coordinator not the person who does it all, we need you for that.

Let’s keep an engaged community -- volunteer. Helen AHF Privitera

What a great indoor picnic. Hot dogs, ham-burgers, miscellany and ice cream for des-sert. As a community we certainly needed this time of fellowship and fun.

4th of July Inside Picnic

4th of July Golf Cart Parade

July 4th was a wonderful day for a parade. A total of twelve carts showed up for this event, three from Swan Lake and the rest from Pescara Lake. Looks like Swan Lake is fairly empty for now. Here’s hoping our snowbirds fly back before the next event.

Dottie celebrates her

91st Birthday

Our venerable Mahjongg master Dorothy Betcher cele-brated her 91st birthday on June 13, 2021. I hope we all wished her a wonderful personal holiday. If not, give her a belated greeting.

From Management

Dear Residents,

Welcome to the dog days of Summer. Things around the Community have picked up a bit. It’s good to see the return of many activities. We also have a beautiful new addition to our communit. Lot I-05 is now home to a brand new 2021 Champion Homes of Merit.

Just a little bit of housekeeping and reminders for this month:

Due to an increase in cars not stopping at the intersection of Swan Drive and Little Swan Drive we have installed new speed bumps. Please keep in mind that the speed limit within the community is 15MPH.

Even though we have entered into our rainy season, fire safety should still be practiced. If you are out walking, please do not discard cigarette butts onto other resident’s yards. Fireworks are not allowed within the community. Please remember to pick up pet waste immediately. Dogs should be kept on leashes no longer than 5 feet and are not allowed on other resident’s yards. Owners need to be in control of their animal at all times.

Lastly, please be patient in regard to the lawn mowing schedule. The grass cannot be mowed if conditions are too wet. The riding mowers that are used are heavy and can create ruts and gouges in the grass if the ground is too soft from the rain. If you think that your yard has been skipped, please call the office. It is usually because conditions were too wet. They will return later in the day, if possible. Re-member to keep trash and recycling bins on the driveway, not the grass. Also please make sure your trees are pruned or trimmed so that the mowers can maneuver around them. Thank you for all that you do to help Swan Lake be such a great community.

Sincerely, Katie Boisvert

Community Manager

Reminder from Management

Please make sure your correct phone number(s) and contact information are on file with the office.

Meals Out

June Dinner Out

Longhorn Steakhouse hosted by Helen AHF Privitera

The food was good but the management did not seat us all together at the long table in the back. We were split up into small groups, kind of a bummer.

Meals Out

June Breakfast Out

Mountain Comforts Coffee Café hosted by Del Hall.

As always, a great place to eat and enjoy each other’s company.

GORDON FOOD SERVICES

When shopping at Gordon Food Services (GFS) on 14th Street, please inform the cashier that you are from Swan Lake Village, and would like the points added to that mem-bership. They have some great products and it is open to the public. The points will help our kitchen acquire some of the supplies we need from time to time.

Thank you for your contributions.

National Play in the Sand Day Picnic

This outing is listed in the Community Activities article. As an honorarium to National Play in the Sand Day, we are having a community picnic at Coquina Beach on August 12 at noon. I realize it is really on the 11th but as there is a conflict with Lunch Out, we will celebrate it on the 12th. This will be of the same nature as the Ivy Circle parties. That means be prepared

for a picnic, bring your own everything except no need for a dish to pass. An option, if desired, is to eat at the Coquina Beach Café. They have wonderful fish tacos.

So, don your bathing suit, grab your sandals, pack a lunch and join the community at Coquina Beach. Don’t forget your shovel and pail! Submitted by Connie Carpenter

and Helen AHF Privitera

Encouraging Words

I love when you look at someone with a smile on your face, and they break into a smile back at you, not because they know why you are smiling, but because you’re happy. And that’s enough to make them happy.

BEHIND YOU, all your memories BEFORE YOU, all your dreams AROUND YOU, all who love you

WITHIN YOU, all you need May love and laughter light your days,

and warm your heart and home. May good and faithful friends be yours,

wherever you may roam.

Hair of the dog

Meaning: This is a cure by treating an illness by what

caused it, especially alcohol taken in the morning after a night of heavy drinking.

Origin: Most sources believe this came from the 16th

century practice of dressing a bite from a rabid dog with a burnt hair from that animal.

Cat got your tongue?

Meaning: Why aren’t you talking?

Origin: Some sources say this had to do with the use of a cat-o-nine-tails to punish sailors into submission. Others state it is from a Middle Eastern punishment in which a liar had his tongue removed and fed to the king’s cat. Either is rather unpleasant don’t you think?

Flavor of the month

Meaning: A short lived infatuation or trend

Origin: In the 1930’s and ‘40’s various ice cream manu-facturers encouraged buyers to buy their

product by offering a special flavor each month.

Poem of the Month

Sea Shell

Amy Lowell

Sea Shell, Sea Shell,

Sing me a song, O Please!

A song of ships, and sailor men,

And parrots, and tropical trees,

Of islands lost in the Spanish Main

Which no man ever may find again,

Of fishes and corals under the waves,

And seahorses stabled in great green caves.

Sea Shell, Sea Shell,

Sing of the things you know so well.

Community Security Program

As most of you have read, the Community Watch has un-dergone changes and is still doing so. All there is to say at this point is the following very important item.

The first response to any situation is:

CALL THE SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT AT 911

Before any other action is taken.

Important to Pool Users

As most of you know, our pool is heated from October until May and needs to be uncovered in the morning and re-covered at night during that time. Terry & I have been doing this for about the last 3 years. We would really ap-preciate it if we could get some volunteers to help us with this. It’s not really hard but more of a commitment. There is a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board in the hall, please consider volunteering.

Following are some safety & crime prevention tips from our friendly Sheriff Chris Ralston: 1) If you see something, Say something.

To report emergencies, crimes or critical information call 911 To report non-critical information call 941-747-3011 extension 2260 2) When leaving your vehicle, remove valuables.

3) Lock it or lose it, especially bicycles.

4) Screen your telephone calls and never give out personal information over the phone.

Schemes by the Bad Guys

Watch out for Distractionary Burglary. This is where one person claims to be a salesman or repairman to get you outside your house and distracted while another burglarizes your home.

Be careful of numbers that show on your telephone when receiving a call. Many of them are spoofed and are not the actual number calling you. As stated above, screen your calls. Unless you know the number do not call it back. Recently the sheriff’s number was thus spoofed, so even if it sounds legitimate, confirm the identity of the caller.

When we are in hurricane season, Sheriff Chris reminds us to be prepared. To this end he has dropped some of the

All-Hazards Disaster Planning Guide with our community manager, Katie Boisvert for distribution. It has an evacuation

map and other helpful guides.

He also referred to a pamphlet named Prepare for Emergencies Now: Information for Older Americans which can be found online at https://www.fema.gov/media-library/assets/documents/166473 or by typing the title of the booklet in your search engine.

Sheriff Chris further stated that there are many useful tools at Ready.gov - the department of homeland security’s (a.k.a. FEMA) official site.

Manatee county also has helpful resources at :

Words of Wisdom from Sheriff Chris

Senior Citizens Day History

Senior Citizen Day aims to honor and support our

elders. Senior Citizens play an important role in our

society as they help us understand the past while

teaching us life lessons for the future. Seniors are

valued due to their achievements, knowledge, and

contributions to society. President Ronald Reagan is

credited with the origin of this observance in 1988.

There are many businesses that offer discounts for

senior citizens on this day.

Senior Citizens Day Facts

According to prb.org, there were 52 million

Ameri-cans aged 65 or older in the US in 2018. That number

is expected to increase to 95 million by 2060.

The average life expectancy in the US increased

from 68 years in 1950 to 78.6 years in 2017.

According to prb.org, between 2019 and 2060 the

older US population is projected to become more

ra-cially and ethnically diverse. The percentage of older

non-Hispanic whites is projected to drop from 77% to

55%.

(26)

Bits and Pieces for us Older Folk

Below are a bunch of random thoughts for your consideration and/or amusement.

It’s not that I am old… It’s just that your music really sucks.

People born in the 50’s have lived in 7 decades, 2 centuries and 2 millenniums. We had the best music, fastest cars, drive-in theatres, soda fountadrive-ins and happiest days. And we are not even old yet, we’re just that cool.

Why is it called ‘beauty sleep’ when you wake up looking like a troll?

You gotta love the irony of a generation raised on making prank calls only to be terrorized by daily robo-calls now. A 70-year-old man asks his wife, “Do you feel sad when you see me running after young girls?” The wife replied, “No, not at all. Even dogs chase cars they can’t drive!”

Things that used to hurt my back: - Jumping off garages - Crashing my bike - Falling out of a tree

- Diving into the shallow end - Contact sports

Things that hurt my back now: - Sneezing

- Washing the dishes - Brushing my teeth - Tying my shoes - Rolling over in bed

Now that my children are grown, I hope they still come through the front door without knocking. I hope they head for the kitchen for a snack and slump on the sofa to watch TV. I hope they come in and feel the weight of adulthood leave them, for they are home. For my children, my door will forever be open.

This morning I went down to the paint store to get thinner… it didn’t work!

Remember when you used to be able to call a person 57 times and they never knew who it was. Just for the RECORD: A person born in ‘33 was 45 in ‘78.

Grandpas are there to help children get into mischief that they haven’t thought of yet.

One way to find out if you are old is to fall down in front of a lot of people. If they laugh, you’re still young. If they panic and start running to you, you’re old.

I was thinking of all the things I needed to do today, and my mind went blank. Problem solved! 80 beers minus your age plus 40 will give the year you were born.
