Course Description
port·fo·li·o (pôrt-fō'lē-ō') n. pl. port·fo·li·os
1. A portable case for holding material, such as loose papers, photographs, or drawings. 2. The materials collected in such a case, especially when representative of a person’s work.

This course is designed for the serious art student who is genuinely interested in the creation of advanced level work. Course work is designed to develop a body of work (portfolio) highlighting a student’s visual arts strengths and interests, which is suitable for application to an art school/college. A portfolio case is recommended, but not covered by course fees.
A Portfolio course fee of $30 is due by ________________. Show the receipt to the teacher.
If your fee is not paid, you will be unable to use supplies (including sketchbook, drawing
pencil set, CD/sleeve/label for digital portfolio, et cetera).
Course Objectives
By the end of this course, you should be able to: 1. Define a portfolio.
a. Exhibit an advanced understanding of your “best work”, considering composition and craftsmanship.
b. Create a physical portfolio (collection of actual work).
c. Create a digital portfolio (collection of digital images of work). 2. Demonstrate an understanding of advanced art-making techniques
a. Draw realistically with high contrast
b. Create an image using layers in a digital program.
3. Explain the connections between artwork and society, historical and contemporary. 4. Identify the purpose of art shows.

Extra Credit Policy
No extra credit is offered during the Portfolio Development course.
Attendance
Due to the nature of a studio art course, you should make every effort to attend class everyday as the content builds upon itself. (Also remember, the school has party incentives for great attendance.)
Skipping and Tardies will be reported to the office per the student handbook guidelines.
Late Work Policy
In order to move quickly and successfully, specific deadlines for all assignments are clearly stated in the course syllabus. Should a student be unable to meet a deadline, it is expected the student will make arrangements in advance with the teacher. Note that an excused absence is addressed per the guidelines in the student handbook.
If a student does not make prior arrangements with the teacher and fails to turn work in on time, the following penalties may be applied:
Work that is submitted 1 - 2 calendar days AFTER its due date may be graded down a maximum of 5%. Works that is submitted 3 - 6 calendar days AFTER its due date may be graded down a maximum of 10%. Work that is submitted 7 - 21 days AFTER its due date may be graded down a maximum of 20%.
Work that is submitted more than 21 days AFTER its due date will receive an automatic zero.
Mid-Term and Final Exams constitute 10% of the course grade. Not showing up and/or completing the requirements for the exams will constitute in an automatic zero.
Plagiarism Policy
Plagiarism will not be tolerated and will be handled according to the guidelines in the student handbook.

When preparing your portfolio think of your audience, your strengths, and what you are trying
to tell the viewer. Work that may be included, but is not limited to, drawing, painting, design,
printmaking, collage, photography, ceramics, sculpture, and digital work. You may also
include your sketchbook, but that will take the place of one piece of artwork.
