Before You Start

HP RDX Continuous Data Protection (CDP) Software is for use only with HP RDX Removable Disk Backup Systems and RDX-compatible cartridges.

This quick start guide describes how to install and use the HP Continuous Data Protection software with the HP RDX Backup System (separate HP RDX Utility software is also supplied with the HP RDX Backup System and should be installed prior to installing the CDP Software).

For further information see:

the 'HP RDX Removable Disk Backup System user guide' for information about installing and using the RDX Backup System and the RDX utility.

This product contains open source code that may be downloaded fromhttp://www.hp.com/ support/rdx.

Installing the Software

Double click the HP RDX Continuous Data Protection Setup file (the file name contains "hp-rdx-setup" and a build number) to begin the installation process.

The install requires the creation of a Licensing Account.

1. Enter a valid e-mail address, password and password confirmation. 2. Accept the Terms of Service.

3. Click the Create Account button.

NOTE: This information is only used to create an account, which will then enable future software updates to be provided. The information will not be used for any other purposes.

4. Configure the backup drive by selecting the icon (i.e. “Add a new destination”).

(5)

5. Click the check mark to the left of the appropriate cartridge to select it. The check mark turns green when the cartridge is selected, then click the Done button.

6. The Backup Configuration dialogue box is displayed. Full System Protection is turned on by default.

7. Click the pencil icon to the right of Full System Protection to add additional drives to be backed up. Click the check mark to the left of the appropriate drives to protect them. Click the Done button to complete the selection process.

(6)

8. Click the Back button at the bottom left corner to return to the Main Dashboard page. The Backup will begin shortly.

Ejecting an RDX Cartridge When Using the HP CDP Software

When using the HP CDP software, the best way to eject a RDX cartridge is to use one of the following options:

• Select Devices and Printers, highlight the RDX device and then choose the Eject option

• Select Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media option in the Windows System Tray and then Eject the relevant RDX device.

This ensures the correct system notifications are provided between Windows and the HP CDP software during the eject process.

Create a Bootable Recovery Media

IMPORTANT: To recover an entire system, you must create a bootable recovery media. 1. Open the Settings page and click the Recovery Disk option.

(7)

2. Select the desired media type where the Recovery Media will be created.

NOTE: The .ISO file will be downloaded and then written to the media. This can take several minutes.

Recovering Files

1. Locate and open the backup on your HP RDX cartridge with one of the following methods:

• Clicking the Browse button on the main Dashboard page.

• Selecting the Browse backups option in the right click menu of the System Tray icon.

• Opening the HP RDX Continuous Backup Protection System Folder in Windows Explorer. 2. Click the icon of the connected RDX cartridge to display the backup.

3. Navigate through the backup to find the desired file to be restored.

4. Drag and drop the file to the required location or use Copy and Paste to copy the file to the desired location.

Recovering an Entire System

1. Insert the HP RDX Continuous Data Protection Recovery Media (either a CD/DVD or a USB flash drive) into the server or workstation.

2. Make sure the HP RDX Removable Backup System is connected and the RDX cartridge with the backup is loaded into the HP RDX dock.

3. Reboot the server or workstation. It will boot from the CD/DVD (or USB flash drive, as appropriate).

NOTE: If your server or workstation does not reboot from the CD/DVD or USB flash drive, please check your BIOS settings and configure your boot sequence preferences.

4. Select the appropriate language and accept the warning that any data on the hard disk will be lost.

5. A number of screens are displayed that allow you to make specific choices for disk recovery. Choose:

• the appropriate RDX cartridge

• the system, if more than one has been backed up to the cartridge

(8)

• the volume (which disk(s) should be restored)

• the required recovery point.

NOTE: The “Recovery Point History” will display the available recovery points (date and time) that can be selected during a full system recovery

• the target disk

6. Once you confirm the target disk, the restore process commences and may take several hours. On completion, you will be prompted to reboot the computer. If you used a CD/DVD as the Recovery Media, it will be automatically ejected during the system restart.

Miscellaneous Backup Information

A history of the backups are available by clicking the History button at the bottom right corner of the user interface

The list of available recovery points are found in the backup configuration page. Click the Change button to the right side of the drive name in the local area. Then click the History option to the right of Full System Protection.
