CHM 130 Course Information and Policies
Instructional Materials
Required Text: Introductory Chemistry: Concepts & Critical Thinking, custom edition or 6thedition is OK, Charles H. Corwin.
Text web site: http://www.prenhall.com/corwin
Optional: Study Guide, Solutions manual for the above text
Required: Non-programmable Scientific Calculator (has LOG, SCI and EXP or EE buttons) Note that graphing calculators are not allowed on quizzes or exams!
Attendance
Attendance is very important to be successful in this class. If you are absent, you are still responsible for all material covered during your absence. If you are absent 6 times in MWF class or 4 times in MW class without contacting me you will be withdrawn from the course with a W or Y depending on the date.
Academic Integrity and Student Responsibility
Violations of scholastic ethics are considered serious offenses by Glendale Community College, the Chemistry Department and by your instructor. Students may consult the GCC Student Handbook at
http://www.gc.maricopa.edu/catalog/ Students caught cheating will receive a grade of zero on the assignment.
Repeat offences will be cause for failing the course. If you believe cheating is occurring, please let me know.
Students are responsible for knowledge of the material in the GCC Student Handbook and Catalog.
Classroom Behavior
Possession of drugs, alcohol or firearms on college property is illegal. Cell phones, music players, ipods and PDAs must be turned off during class time. During exams, these devices may not be on your person. Students creating disturbances that interfere with the conduct of the class or the learning of others will be asked to leave.
Withdrawals - I will withdraw anyone who misses 4 classes without talking with me. Grades of “I” are given only under extreme circumstances if the student requests it in writing, meets with the instructor, provides documentation, and the instructor approves it before the final exam. If you withdraw from lecture before March 29th you must also withdraw from the lab. Students who take the final exam are not eligible to receive a "W."
It is the responsibility of the student to drop the course before the deadline for student-initiated withdrawal. Students should use the Student Information System (SIS) to withdraw from the course. The instructor may drop a student for excessive absences (as defined by the instructor) with a grade of W or Y, depending on course grade at time of withdrawal. After the deadline specified in the current GCC course schedule, you will need instructor approval and a contract signed and dated by the student and myself in order to withdraw. Students may not withdraw during the last two weeks of the semester unless you have signed a contract with me; an A-F grade will be assigned. If approved for withdrawal, students may receive a grade of “Y” if the current course average is less than 60%. Contact your instructor if you wish to remain in the lecture course with a failing grade but receive a “W” (the instructor will evaluate the appropriateness of each situation on a case-by-case basis). Note: A grade of “Y” counts as an “F” in your GPA until the class is retaken and a higher grade is earned. If you require a letter grade because of financial aid, you must continue to attend class. After the restricted withdrawal date, if you wish to drop the course and are not passing at that time you may receive a Y for your grade. It is always a good idea to talk to your instructor before dropping any course.
Workload
Students are expected to spend an average of 9 hours per week attending class sessions, doing assignments, reading, studying and preparing for exams. It is essential that you NOT get behind in the course. See study and exam tips on the Dr. Kim’s “Help” web page.
Class Notes
The class notes should be printed before class and used to follow along in lecture. They help immensely!
http://web.gccaz.edu/~ksmith8/chm130.htm
Course Web Site
Additional course materials are available through Dr. Kim Smith’s website. You will need to access the course web site (http://web.gccaz.edu/~ksmith8/chm130.htm ). Here you can find the HELP page, chapter notes, Worksheets, exam keys, grades, and more. Blackboard is NOT used.
Grades
You can access your grades anytime (http://web.gccaz.edu/~dleedy/grades.html). Grades will be posted
periodically; you will look up your grade by the grade code you selected and submitted to me at the beginning of the semester.
Save Money
You can print your lab reports double sided in the High Tech Centers. Less paper = less money and it is good for the environment too! Look under “print options” or ask for help.
CHM 130 Grading Policies
Your final grade will be calculated as follows:
Assignment Number of
assignments Point per
assignment Total point value
Homework 4 40 160
Quizzes 15 5 75
Exams 4 100 400
Final Exam 1 175 175
Total 810
A = 90-100%
B = 80-89%
C = 70-79%
D = 60-69%
F = below 60%
Homeworks - Homeworks are assignments completed outside of class. They will be posted on my web site on the CHM 130 page. You will work in your assigned group (2-3 students) and turn in one paper for the group, but I must see each person’s handwriting on the assignment equally (initial by problems you wrote answers to). You may not simply put someone’s name at the top of the assignment. You may use your textbook and notes. No homework will be dropped. Homeworks will be due the Monday before exams at the beginning of class, and answer keys will be posted the following day. You must work with another person on home works and turn in one copy for both (or all three) of you. If you have an issue meeting/working with your group member(s), see/email me BEFORE the homework is due. If two people turn in two separate home works that are the same, that is considered cheating because it looks like one person just copied the other person.
Group Quizzes - Quizzes are unannounced class assignments given at any point in a chapter (typically at the end of a chapter but sometimes at the half-way point). You may use the textbook, class notes, and me as resources. Each quiz will be graded out of 5 points. Your lowest quiz (maybe more than one) will be dropped. If you miss a quiz, it will be the one dropped. If you miss a second quiz, you may make it up without penalty if excused (within two weeks of missing the quiz). If not excused, you will receive a zero for that quiz.
Exams and Final - Exams are individual effort. Exams will take 50 minutes and consist of multiple choice and short answer type questions. You may not use your book, notes or other material during the exams except a non-programmable, non-graphing calculator. Each exam will be graded out of 100 points. The Final Exam will be similar to other exams except it will be comprehensive, only multiple- choice, and it will count as 150 points toward your final grade. Cell phones must be off during exams and put under your desk, not in your pockets. If you miss an exam, the same score as your final exam will replace it.
If you miss a second exam, you may make it up without penalty if excused (and provide documentation to support this). If not excused, there is a 10% penalty per day late. No exam can be made up after graded exams are returned (typically by the following class meeting). You may make up only one exam.
Excused Absences - Absences are excused for the following reasons if properly documented in writing: illness such that a medical doctor or ER was visited, death in the immediate family, approved GCC travel, a child that you care for is ill, or transportation to the class was impossible due to a car accident. Absences are not excused if there is no documentation. Notes from parents are not acceptable. It is up to YOU to contact me regarding absences, to check if you missed an assignment, a quiz or important announcement, and to see what we covered in class.
