Join Hanze University of Applied Sciences (UAS),

Groningen, and share your talent to move the world. Hanze UAS offers you an environment rich in opportunities. Since it was first established in 1798, Hanze UAS has focused on high-quality, practical education that is directly related to the professional workplace.

Practice-oriented education

Hanze UAS offers practice-oriented education. This means that you will be required to put the theory you learn into practice. By working in international project groups on actual cases, you will develop the practical skills needed to enter the professional field. You will experience a variety of teaching methods – from lectures and class discussions, to presentations and workshops – all of which are designed to enhance your learning.

Personal attention

One of the main didactic principles of Hanze UAS is the value it puts on personal attention. Classes are small and each class is assigned a lecturer who acts as a coach. To emphasise this personal attention, as a first-year student you will follow an introduction week with the aim to give you a smooth transition into life as a student at Hanze UAS. During the introduction week you will be introduced to the city of Groningen, have the opportunity to meet your fellow students and become familiar with the facilities.

In 1798, six citizens of the city of Groningen founded a university of applied sciences, creating the first multi-sector institute of higher education in the Netherlands. The founders had a goal to enhance professional practice and started a university that welcomed both the rich and poor. The university offered subjects in art, construction engineering and navigation. In the centuries that followed, many additional private initiatives were explored, including an institute of physical education, a city conservatoire and a training college for primary school teachers. In 1993 these institutes merged to form Hanze University of Applied Sciences (UAS), Groningen.

Holland or the netherlands?

When most people think of Holland, the name more commonly used for the Netherlands, the first things that usually spring to mind are tulips, cheese, wooden shoes, windmills, DJ Tiësto and Van Gogh. Also from a business perspective, Holland is quite renowned. Its famous merchant history, think of the 17th century Golden Age of Discovery, translates into many of today’s multi-nationals such as Royal Dutch Shell, Philips, Unilever, Heineken and ING Bank. Yet, it is not only a country full of windmills and global businesses but also a great place to live. Attractive features of the country are its historic towns and villages, the beautiful and varied landscapes and the mild climate. It attracts visitors from all over the world, who find that people are friendly and open-minded. They find it pleasant and modern, life is comfortable and everything is well-organised.

Groningen

Situated in the north of the Netherlands, Groningen is a young - half of the Groningen population is under 35! – and vibrant city with a picturesque city centre and surrounded by beautiful countryside. The city is not only historically interesting, it also has impressive modern architecture, such as the eye-catching Groninger Museum, which attracts a lot of international attention.

Groningen: a student city

With more than 50,000 students (out of 190,000 inhabitants), Groningen is justly known as one of the best cities for studying in the Netherlands. There are plenty of study opportunities, with over 175 study programmes at the two main universities: the University of Groningen and Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen. The city also has some great shopping and a buzzing nightlife. Moreover, Groningen was even one of the cities voted “safest city in the Netherlands” and has extremely high standards of health care and education. And, to top it all off, although Dutch is the main language, English is widely spoken.

Getting around

Dutch transport is affordable and effective. The railway system is simple, fast, extensive and reliable, so there is no need to have a car. For shorter distances, the bicycle is by far the most popular mode of transport. In fact, there are said to be more bicycles than people in Holland, and twice as many bicycles as cars! For travelling abroad, the Netherlands is ideally situated. Holland is often called “The Gateway to Europe” since London, Paris, Prague, Copenhagen or Rome are all within easy reach by car, train or the award-winning Schiphol airport, one of Europe’s major transport hubs. One can also travel to cities such

as Paris, London or Copenhagen. Groningen is approximately two hours away from Schiphol Airport and the German Bremen Airport, for which there is a regular bus or train service.

GroningenLife!

Did you know that the happiest students of the Netherlands live in Groningen? Or that Groningen was voted one of the best student cities three years in a row? Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen (Hanze UAS)

Founded in 1798, Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen is the oldest university of applied sciences in the Netherlands. With a student body of over 25,000 and approximately 2,700 staff members, it is also the largest university of applied sciences in the north of the Netherlands and is widely respected internationally. Furthermore, it is a knowledge institute in which applied research and innovation are integrated into the various curricula of the institution.

Co-operation with businesses

Career perspective

The practice-oriented and project-based educational system is why many students succeed in finding employment quickly after they graduate. For example, of all the students who successfully complete the International Business and Management programme, as many as 95 percent finds a job within two months.

Zernike Campus

Hanze (UAS) offers its students a wide range of modern facilities throughout the campus. This includes extensive library facilities at the Hanze Media Centre, the Cast (a cultural café), study landscapes, a wide range of cultural and sports facilities and various shops and businesses. There are often concerts, exhibitions and other cultural events in the spacious Atrium where students can take a break from their studies and have something to eat.

Higher education in the netherlands

The education system in the Netherlands is known for its high quality in education and research as well as its international study environment. With 1,560 international study programmes and courses it has the most of continental Europe.

The Netherlands has two main types of higher education: Research Universities and Universities of Applied Sciences. Research universities focus on the independent practice of research oriented work in an academic or professional setting. Universities of applied sciences offer professional programmes in the applied arts and sciences that prepare students for specific careers. Both types of universities offer bachelor and master programmes.

At Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen, all programmes include work placements that provide the students with practical work experience, which is much appreciated by future employers.

This is an organisation that acts as an intermediary in finding temporary accommodation for international students. You are encouraged to apply as early as possible. International business environment

Corporate communication in an intercultural context

Communication planning and management

Semester 2 – The communication professional in context During the second semester you will complete a number of specialisations from one or more of the partner schools. The consortium offers you a broad spectrum of professional specialisations, roles and tasks. During the specialisations, you will analyse and solve a communication problem for an outside client.

Programme description

Five universities across Europe, all specialising in corporate communication and public relations in international professional contexts, have joined forces to create a unique joint programme offering you the full benefit of their collective expertise and international networks. The art of painting serves as a source of inspiration, but all the time its frontiers and the space outside them are being explored.

Facilities

You will have access to studios seven days a week and can make use of the available equipment, including exceptional computer facilities, in line with regulations. Also, you can make use of facilities such as editing machines, photography and video equipment, the media lab, and courses that are part of other advanced education programmes.

“An opportunity to acquire a

profound understanding of the

significance and applications

of scenography.”

Programme description

The fulltime two-year Master of Fine Arts (MFA) Scenography offers you a track of theatrical research, theoretical reflection and practical experience, and an opportunity to acquire a profound understanding of the significance and applications of scenography in the theatre and in theatrical spaces. The exit performance criteria imply that you are able to make a substantial contribution to the development of the occupational field. This master’s programme seeks to enable you to specialise and enhance your knowledge in the field of scenography and art direction.

The programme aims to achieve this objective by:

Enhancing your understanding of professional

theatrical organisation and production

Teaching you to fathom interdisciplinary artistic

moments from a visual, imaginative and theoretically reflective perspective

Offering various opportunities of a social

deepening of theatre.

The Master Course Scenography/Art Direction also covers, among other things, computer games, theatrical scenography and film, etc. Much attention is paid to the application of computer media.

Programme outline

The course revolves around four starting points: research, representation, acquisition of in-depth knowledge, and reflection. Just like theatre in practice, the programme is subject to ongoing change. The assignments you will work on cover both theoretical and practical aspects. Similarly, the your own research projects also have a dual nature; they are intended to stimulate the development of your own theatre design practice as well as theoretical reflection on that development. Prominent guest lecturers from the work field contribute to the programme. Part of the programme

includes lectures at the University of Groningen, theory and dramaturgical lessons at the FMI Master, and visits to theatrical productions. The practice-oriented components you will carry out consist of both individual and group projects and of cooperative projects with theatre organisations and theatremakers. In addition, students also conduct individual research consisting of designing and implementing scenographic projects. The study programme is spread over four semesters, each lasting 20 weeks. There is an assessment at the end of each semester, and the fourth semester is rounded off by a final exam.

Facilities

You will have the opportunity to make use workplaces seven days a week, in line with the relevant regulations. Throughout the programme you will have access to the programme areas, comprising an auditorium, a number of recording studios, student areas or working studios with excellent computer facilities and a media lab.

Career perspectives

The professional practice for scenographers has expanded considerably in the past few decades as a result of the blurring of boundaries between artistic and cultural expressions. As an MFA Scenography graduate you can design all possible spatial environments, from traditional proscenium stages to visual theatre (on location) and virtual spaces. You will be able to accept and work on all assignments that need ideas for a dramatic design of space.

Programme description

The Master of Fine Arts (MFA) Painting focuses on developing an artistic system characterised by a sound individual ground, a clear artistic view and strong professionalism. To achieve this, an intensive and reflective practice and an inquiring mind are essential. The course requires research with various objectives. First, we distinguish research for the purpose of developing your own work. Secondly, reflection on your own practice. Finally, the work of art may serve to research a question or issue (artistic or otherwise). Consequently, it is not a matter of a general or domain-specific methodology that is being taught, but rather of individual supervision of the research process. Within MFA Painting, research results represent an explicit view of your own work and art in general on the one hand, and visual work of good quality based on theoretical study on the other. The presentation of research results (visual or otherwise) is an equally important point of particular interest within the course.

“The programme was set up

to give visual artists the

opportunity to enhance their

knowledge, insight and skills.”

Career prospects

The Master of Fine Arts Painting introduces visual artists into society, enabling them to make a vital and personal contribution to the development of painting and its significance for our culture, from a clear understanding of both the practice and theory of visual art. As an artist you will be able to give shape to contemporary notions on the basis of conceptual, professional, theoretical and innovative skills. The programme was set up to give visual artists the opportunity to enhance their knowledge, insight and skills. As a graduate you will be able to draw up strategic plans for your work processes, formulate your own artistic theories, and communicate about your work. This will enable you to secure an ongoing and prominent position on various platforms of the art market. For more information visit: www.hanzegroningen.eu
