Below is the tariff table for 2015/16 for all approved University Teaching Practices for community-based medical education during the period 18th August 2015 to 17th August 2016. During this time practices are expected to receive a maximum number of medical student placements, commensurate with their specified availability. However, the University cannot always guarantee to allocate the maximum number.

Community Based Placements

Fees for practice placements are as follows;

Year 1 A pair of students for a half or whole day £120 per pair, per half day visit

Year 2 A pair of students for a half or whole day £120 per pair, per half day visit

Year 3

One pair of students, one day a week over periods of 6, 7, 10, 12, 13 or 14 weeks.

(Preston Year 3) One pair of students for 3 full days per week over a four week block, up to six blocks

per year.

Year 4

One pair of students, one day per week for twelve weeks of a 16 week semester, with up to two

semesters per year.

Year 3 & 4 PEPs (Personal Excellence

Pathway)

Individual PEPs – one student, 3 days per week for 4 weeks

Hub and Spoke model:

Hub Practices – Groups of up to 8 students, 1 day per week for 4 weeks

Spoke Practices - 1 pair of students, 2 days per week for 4 weeks

£960 per student

Research Project Options

One student for an 11 week period £1,500 per student (11 weeks)

Year 5 One student per session over a 4 week period

Early Clinical Experience – Years 1 & 2

Students attend community based early clinical experience activities in each semester of the first two years of the course. Payment is made at a rate of £60 per student per half-day visit and the students are normally sent out in pairs.

Purchase Orders (POs) will be provided twice per year. Please ensure the correct PO number is quoted on the invoice, otherwise payment cannot be made.

Years 3 & 4

In Year 3 students will attend placements in the community, normally for 1 day per week over two 13/14 week semesters. Depending on the Health Education Zone (HEZ) you fall within, one pair of students may attend for the full semester (13/14 weeks), or two pairs may attend, each for the equivalent of half a semester (6 or 7 weeks).

In the Preston HEZ placements consist of 3 full days per week over 4 week blocks, up to 6 blocks per year.

In Year 4 students will attend placements in the community for one full day per week for 12 weeks of a 16 week semester, with two semesters occurring in the academic year.

Payments for students will be made on a pro rata basis of £84.80 per student per day.

POs will be provided twice per year. Please ensure the correct PO number is quoted on the invoice otherwise payment cannot be made.

Personal Excellence Pathway (PEP) – Year 3

Individual PEP - one practice takes a student for three days per week for a duration of four

weeks. Payment is made at a rate of £960 per student.

Hub and Spoke (Group) PEP - The Group PEP model consists of a hub supported by

several spokes. Eight students are placed at the Hub for teaching one day per week, and are placed two to each Spoke for the other two days per week for four weeks. Payment to the Hub is £2475 per group, while Spokes are paid £1120 per pair of students.

Hub PEP groups are expected to amount to 33 hours in total per group over 4 weeks. They are managed by the Pauliina Ketola, the Phase 2 administrator. Please contact her at

Please ensure that invoices are only submitted for completed sessions. Invoices for future sessions cannot be paid.

Community Day Placements (CDPs) – Years 3 & 4

Community Day Placements are one-day sessions where a student signs up for the

sessions they wish to attend. Payments for CDPs are made at a rate of £55 per student per day, unless otherwise agreed by CBME.

Purchase Orders will be provided at the end of each semester. Please ensure that invoices are not sent until a PO is received and once received that the invoice matches up with the details on the PO.

Project Options – Year 4

Project Options are another student selection area and are not compulsory within the community. For students who select the option a payment of £1,500 will be made per student for a 10 week block.

Purchase Orders will be provided at the end of the 10 week period. Please ensure that invoices are not submitted until a Purchase Order is received, and that the invoice quotes the correct Purchase Order number.

Year 5

In Year 5 students will attend 1 compulsory 4 week block during semester 1 (the pre-exempting exam period). Students then have the option of choosing to attend a second block in semester 2 (post-exempting exam period).

In summary, practices will normally take one student in each of the first four blocks and then one or more blocks in the post-exempting period depending on student demand.

Payment for students will be made at a value of £97.60* per day per student for pre-exempting blocks and £80* per day per student for post-exemption blocks.

N.B. While most practices will be fully utilised in the pre-exemption placements there may not be a large number of students to place in the post-exemption blocks as these rely on student choice.

*Please note practices that are allocated a student with additional support needs will receive £120 per day per student in the pre-exempting blocks and £110 in the post-exempting blocks.

Payment Procedure

Before placement providers can be paid by the University of Manchester, they must sign a contract agreement and be engaged as an official supplier, for which organisational and banking details are required. Contracts will be sent out prior to the start of the academic year and our Finance Administrator will contact each supplier with the relevant finance forms in advance of the beginning of any placements. Placement providers must complete and

return these forms before and purchase orders can be issued or payments made. Failure to do so can result in delays and in extreme cases, the necessity of returning funding to the NHS.

Payment will be made by the University of Manchester on submission of an invoice. The invoice must be numbered and include the correct Purchase Order (PO) number, dates

of the placement and the numbers and names of the students. All this detail can be

found on the PO which will be sent to you at the end of each relevant academic block. Please invoice in a timely manner. POs will remain valid for a period of 12 months.

An example of the invoice template can be found below. The invoice must be made out to ‘The University of Manchester’ and put onto headed paper. An original invoice must be sent in order for payment to be made and submitted following the end of the placement to:

The University makes all payments electronically, by BACS. If you have not previously provided bank details to us, please do so on letter-headed paper. The University’s payment terms are 30 days from the invoice date.

The practice will be required to carry out its responsibilities to the students and to the Faculty in accordance with the Service Specification sent to you at the beginning of the Year.

Cancellation Policies

Community Based Placements

If any placement is cancelled by the University within 2 weeks prior to placement commencement then a compensation payment will be made at 50% of the value of the intended placement. If it is cancelled following commencement of the placement, then payment will be made in full. If a placement is withdrawn under any other circumstance the University reserves the right to withhold any payment at their discretion. If a practice withdraws their services for a placement at any time then no payment will be made.

Community Day Placements (CDPs)

If a student has registered for a CDP and either withdraws within 24 hours of the event or does not attend without notification within 24 hours prior, then full payment will be made for the student. If withdrawn more than 24 hours before the session then no payment will be made.
