Invitation to the seventh project meeting in Luleå and Jokkmokk (Sweden)
from June 4th – June 8th 2009 Dear Colleagues,
This is the seventh project meeting as foreseen in our work plan. This meeting is in a very special area – the Artic Circle. Luleå – in Luleå sami Luleju, in finnish Luulaja) is a city with a population of 57 144 in the urban area, and 73 416 including connecting suburbs. The city is located at the coast of Baltic Sea in Norrbotten , northern Sweden. It is the capital of Norrbotten County. Our host, the LTU – Luleå Tekniska Universitet - Luleå University of Technology - is the
northernmost university of technology in Scandinavia and known for ist world-class research and education. The total number of students enrolled at the University are 12. 248, the total number of the staff are 1. 415 persons. This is a sucess story, because Luleå University College was only started in 1971, but the Teacher Educa-tion College started in 1908. Luleå University of Technology conducts research in the Faculty of engineering and the Faculty of arts and social sciences. But not only Lulea City and the University will be our hosts – we have in TICKLE a very special intercultural question, concerning the Sami culture and a visit in Norbotten County cannot be finished before passing the Arctic Circle and get an insight view into the Sami history, culture and actual intercultural problems. That is why we travel from Luleå further north – to Jokkmokk. The District of Jokkmokk is Sweden’s next largest district in size. The total surface is 19 474 km². Half of this area consists of an extensive mountain region with national parks and a number of nature reserves. The national parks belong to the Laponia area, which in December 1996 UNESCO Project Number 134317-2007-DE-COMENIUS-cmp
nominated one of the earth's World Heritage sites. Laponia was chosen as a
combined nature and cultural heritage, which is unusual because normally a World Heritage is either chosen for its nature or culture. Jokkmokk as the traditional win-ter meeting place of the Sámi people holds a word famous market in February since 605 a. C.
Welcome to Northern Sweden!
