Outotec's minerals processing technologies have been developed to provide comminution for various downstream processes and produce concentrates of every category with maximum efficiency. Outotec flotation solutions are always tailored to the customer’s needs to reliably secure high gold recoveries. Outotec's dewatering solutions complement perfectly the total production chain and offer variable options to choose from. The latest proprietary technologies in ore beneficiation includes the Outotec HIGmill™, enabling ultra fine grinding.

Gold ore beneficiation

Due to declining ore grades, future gold processing plants require higher capacities demanding less but larger scale equipment, with a smaller footprint conserving energy, and reducing maintenance and manpower costs.

Concentrator and pressure oxidation technology for Petropavlovsk PLC

Outotec recently supplied engineering, process equipment and technology to Petropavlovsk PCL, the second largest gold producer in Russia with assets located in the Far East. Extensive batch and continuous pilot autoclave test work and flowsheet development has been completed by Petropavlovsk in state-of-the-art laboratories in St Petersburg and Blagoveshchensk. Outotec’s engineering expertise and proprietary process equipment were combined together with Pet-ropavlovsk’s process know-how. Outotec’s deliv-ery comprises flotation plant including all pro-cess equipment, instrumentation and propro-cess control system for the Malomir concentrator, as well as the entire pressure oxidation circuit in-cluding all process equipment and process con-trol system for the Pokrovskiy pressure oxidation plant. Both the Malomir concentrator and Pok-rovskiy pressure oxidation plants are currently under construction.

In refractory ores, gold is locked within sulfide minerals making these ores not amenable to conventional cyanide leaching without pre-treatment. Outotec offers two proven pre-treatment options, pressure oxidation and roasting, to convert the refractory or double refractory ores into easily and effectively leachable form.

Outotec supplies process technology and equipment for all process steps in a pressure oxidation (POX) circuit with a high level of automation and process control to optimize plant performance. A typical POX circuit consists of the following main process steps: carbonate removal, chloride removal, pressure oxidation, gas scrubbing, conditioning, solid-liquid separation and neutralization. Outotec's technology packages are delivered as complete functional units integrated into the processing plant.

Gold ore pre-treatment

under high temperature and pressure using gaseous oxygen liberating gold for leaching and recovery. Oxygen is a key operating expenditure in the POX plant and Outotec's autoclave mixing technology enables efficient use of oxygen with superior gas-liquid mass transfer. Outotec's autoclave train package includes all main and auxiliary equipment from autoclave feed tanks to flash tanks.

The Outotec Larox filtration plant enables maximum chloride washing efficiency with minimum water consumption in applications where chlorides have a negative impact on gold recovery.

The Outotec® High Rate Thickener has pioneered

thickening and clarifying methods around the world and provides a robust and low-cost solution for counter-current decantation of the oxidized slurry.

Outotec's vent gas cleaning technology meets the toughest environmental regulations and captures harmful components from all autoclave exhaust gases.

Outotec is capable of providing complete process solutions for the roasting process with in-house technology for fluidized beds, heat recovery, gas cleaning, sulfuric acid and effluent treatment plants. Fluidized bed roasting is a proven technology with many references covering a wide spectrum of process scenarios. The roasting process for both whole ore and concentrate adds significant benefits to downstream processing.

In roasting, elements posing problems in the leach recovery of gold are either oxidized, including carbon, sulfur, arsenic and antimony, or volatized as in the case with mercury, chlorides and telluride. The roasting process is autothermal, but additional heating is needed for ores with low sulfur and carbon content. The sulfur dioxide created during roasting is further processed from the process gas to sulfuric acid. Off-gas impurities are removed in special Off-gas cleaning steps and hazardous materials are further processed to concentrated products with high stability. Double refractory materials containing both sulfide minerals and organic carbon are especially suitable for roasting. The roasting process can be made in one or two steps depending on the concentrate or ore composition.

In the case where arsenic or antimony is contained within the concentrate, partial roasting or two stage roasting is realized and arsenic is removed from the solid phase and transferred to the gas phase. Gold leaching and recovery

Following pre-treatment by pressure oxidation or roasting, Outotec can provide both carbon-in-pulp (CIP) and carbon-in-leach (CIL) plants, as well as elution and gold recovery technologies as an integrated gold production solution. Our technology portfolio covers cyanide detoxification and tailings disposal. Using in-house know-how and specialized partners, our services begin with test work enabling delivery of an optimized plant with process guarantees. Gold cyanide leaching and recovery plant

Gold leaching is carried out in dilute alkaline cyanide solution in agitated reactors. Highly efficient OKTOP®

Reactors focus on minimizing carbon attrition and maximizing gold recovery. Outotec takes the agitator and reactor solutions to a new level of pre-designed leaching plant modules improving the efficiency and quality of the customer's project implementation.

Innovative cyanide-free gold recovery

Outotec’s on going proactive development work on novel cyanide-free gold leaching and recov-ery technology is one example of our sustain-able thinking. Based on extensive know-how in chloride leaching, Outotec has developed a new environmentally friendly chloride leaching pro-cess for gold ores and concentrates. The new process combines effective gold leaching with a new type of gold solvent extraction process. Highly oxidizing power in gold leaching provides very fast leaching kinetics and excellent gold recovery. Gold can be extracted from pregnant leach solutions using an Outotec's patented solvent extractant. Pure gold product is precipi-tated directly from the stripping solution. Sol-vent extraction technology enables also direct silver recovery.

The effective recovery of gold with minimal water and energy consumption and sustainable disposal of residues is one of the most challenging issues in the gold processing industry. Outotec’s expertise and capability to optimize the total gold production chain includes competitive solutions for water and tailings management. Outotec offers proven tailings thickening and filtration equipment and effluent treatment solutions for water discharges.

Tailings treatment

From conventional to Outotec paste, thickening technology is a modern way to handle and store tailings from gold operations in a more environmentally sustainable way. Compared to traditional dumping, tailings coming from paste thickening contains less water enabling an improved water balance. Outotec has also developed novel filtration solutions for tailings to further improve water re-usage and minimize the tailings disposal area.

After paste thickening, Outotec offers both landfill and backfill solutions for tailings disposal. Our backfill technology allows paste to be stored in the mine either stabilized or dry. Our landfill technology enables stable above ground storage of tailings.
