THE LOCALITY:
The property is situated in the western part of the scattered rural community of Esgairdawe, an area of picturesque hills and valleys with sparkling streams, farm and pastureland, and quiet lanes.
Rhydcymerau village shop is about 4 miles south-westerly on the B4337, the road that skirts Brechfa Forest – the largest area of Forestry Commission property in Wales, covering around 50 square miles, with extensive bridleways and tracks for horse riding and cycling, as well as winding forest roads. The famous mountain biking course is about 7 miles south near Abergorlech in the lovely Cothi valley, also well known for its salmon.
Llansawel village is 4¼ miles south-easterly with a primary school, public houses and places of worship.
Lampeter is 7½ miles northerly from the property, a traditional market town in the Teifi Valley providing a good selection of shops, main post office, a leisure centre with swimming pool, cafes, restaurants and pubs, doctors and dentists, primary and secondary schools, and a University – the oldest in Wales (1822) and the smallest in Britain, occupying a beautiful setting in the foothills of the Cambrian Mountains. Lampeter’s summer events include a Food Festival, the Rhys Thomas James Eisteddfod, the Drovers Arts Festival, and a Carnival.
Llanybydder is about 7¾ miles north-westerly, a small market town also by the River Teifi with a variety of independent shops and businesses, doctor’s surgery and chemist shop, pubs and eateries, and primary school. The Teifi river forms the boundary between Ceredigion and Carmarthenshire and is popular with fishermen (subject to permits) and canoeists. There are lovely places to visit all along its route from the Cambrian Mountains to Cardigan Bay.
The Dolaucothi Gold Mines are about 8 miles by road easterly amidst wooded hillsides overlooking the Cothi valley, with trails leading up into the mountains. The Gold Mines were first exploited by the Romans 2000 years ago, then worked again from the 19th Century up until closure in 1938, and the site is now a museum with tea room and gift shop. Caio Forest is the
neighbouring area – a mostly coniferous, upland forest established over moorland extending over approximately 25 square miles, with excellent horse riding and walking opportunities. Beyond the forest are the wild, empty Cambrian uplands of Mynydd Mallaen (the mountain rises to about 1,500 feet), a remote region with deeply cut valleys, numerous streams, waterfalls, moorland plateau and marshland.
Llandeilo is 14 miles southerly, off the A40, at the fringe of Brecon Beacons National Park – a small, delightful town with distinctive shops, galleries, pubs, hotels, restaurants, main post office, health centre, dentists, schools, churches, and railway station on the scenic Heart of Wales line (Swansea to Shrewsbury). The town dates back to the 13th Century, and was once
the medieval capital of Carmarthenshire, but the development of Llandeilo really grew in the 18th Century as a market town
and banking centre for cattle drovers. The town retains its old world charm, with narrow streets, historic Georgian buildings, and an old stone single-span bridge over the river Towy. Dinefwr Park is just outside Llandeilo, with a 17th Century manor
house (Newton House), woodland, mill pond, fallow deer and white cattle, and the Castle Woods Nature Reserve, which offers a walk to the Welsh 12th Century Dinefwr Castle, perched on a rocky crag commanding stunning views along the Towy Valley.
Carmarthen is 24 miles south-west, the ancient county town and administrative centre with excellent shopping amenities, multi-screen cinema, primary and secondary schools, university college, general hospital, main line railway station and access to the A48/M4-link road. The National Botanic Garden of Wales is about 7 miles east of Carmarthen, featuring the Great Glass House designed by Norman Foster.
The magnificent Cardigan Bay Coast is within easy driving distance, famous for its marine wild life, cliff-top walks, secluded coves, and golden beaches, with Aberaeron 20½ miles north-westerly and New Quay 28 miles north-west.
