Community of Faith United Methodist Church

Pentecost Sunday

| May 31, 2020

Pentecost by the Jesus MAFA Community, Cameroon Fifty days after Easter, the Church celebrates the festival of Pentecost. Echoing the ancient Jewish festival of Shavuot, which remembers God’s giving of the law

on Mount Sinai, Pentecost celebrates God’s giving of the Holy Spirit, itself a fulfillment of ancient prophecy. In our Scripture readings, the disciples are gathered in Jerusalem when the Holy Spirit descends upon them and are given

miraculous ability to speak in many languages, and boldly proclaim that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord Jesus shall be saved.

THOUGHT FOR THE MORNING

Days pass when I forget the mystery. Problems insolvable . . . jostle for my attention … a host of diversions, my courtiers… And then once more the quiet mystery is present to me, the throng’s clamor recedes: the mystery that there is anything, anything at all, let alone cosmos, joy, memory, everything, rather than void: and that, O Lord, Creator, Hallowed One; You still, hour by hour, sustain it.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
