Music Notes
The image of God as a shepherd was immensely appealing to the farming societies of Jesus’s day, as well as long before (through the Psalter) and continuing to the present age. So many versions of Psalm 23 exist partly through this timeline of over three thousand years, and additionally because of the practice of ‘metrical psalmody’ beginning with the Reformation in the 1500s, leading to several of the paraphrases sung in today’s service as hymns. Rutter’s 1976 anthem setting uses an oboe and flute to depict a pastoral setting, and was later included in his Requiem in 1985.
Bach’s “Sheep may safely graze” is from secular cantata No. 208, the “Hunting Cantata” (1713), originally for a Duke’s birthday. The cantata text compares the peaceful life of sheep under a watchful shepherd to the inhabitants of a state with a wise ruler, though that does not detract from its frequent sacred use.In a similar way, the communion anthem was written in 1994 originally as the theme music to the British television show The Vicar of Dibley, although the composer Howard Goodall has said it was always his intention to write something that could have a useful life of its own apart from the series. Like many British musicians, Goodall began as a chorister (at New College, Oxford, later becoming a music scholar there), and went on to write musicals, a Requiem, and memorable themes for Blackadder, Red Dwarf, The Borrowers, and Mr Bean.
The closing hymn’s tune is ascribed to “Brother James,” the familiar name of the spiritual leader James Macbeth Bain, born in Scotland in 1860. A somewhat eccentric personality of great popularity, he worked among the poor in London and wandered in nature for refreshment. He has been compared to St. Francis for his mystic insights combined with an irresistible charm and childlike trust of one who loves all people and all creatures. (Once when walking in the woods he caught his cast on a tree branch, and in freeing himself accidentally broke the branch, much to his annoyance. When asked to explain his annoyance, he responded “Man, I’ve just lost a real good friend. Many a fine cast have I found on that self-same branch.”) The metrical tune upon which the final hymn is based is one of many beautiful melodies which came to him spontaneously. It has, in its simplicity, something of that rare quality of appeal which Maurice Baring describes as “a wonderful tune ― a tune that opened its arms.”
Missa Zabriskie, a congregational Mass setting based on the hymn Sweet Sacrament Divine by The Rev.
Francis Stanfield, is dedicated to The People of The Zabriskie Memorial Church of Saint John the Evangelist, Newport, Rhode Island (Past, Present, and Future). Stanfield was an English priest who worked in London’s Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Westminster. He published over a dozen devotional hymns including one set to a tune written in about 1878 by Edward Elgar, another famous Roman Catholic composer. Stanfield’s father, the prominent marine painter Clarkson Frederick Stanfield, was named for the slave trade abolitionist Thomas Clarkson and was a friend of Charles Dickens. The devout Stanfields were known not just for brilliance in their respective art-forms but also for their “personal simplicity and modesty.” The organ part of the Gloria contains two hymns for Maundy Thursday: Pange Lingua and Ubi caritas. It’s fun to say Missa Zabriskie out loud (try it), honoring the namesake parishioner who caused our present building and organ to be built in 1894 at a time when a fledgling nineteen-year old congregation in financial straits might have perished.

Summary of the Law
Hear what our Lord Jesus Christ saith: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

Old Testament (Sitting; at High Mass only) Jeremiah 23:1-6
Woe be unto the pastors that destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! saith the Lord. Therefore thus saith the Lord God of Israel against the pastors that feed my people; Ye have scattered my flock, and driven them away, and have not visited them: behold, I will visit upon you the evil of your doings, saith the Lord. And I will gather the remnant of my flock out of all countries whither I have driven them, and will bring them again to their folds; and they shall be fruitful and increase. And I will set up shepherds over them which shall feed them: and they shall fear no more, nor be dismayed, neither shall they be lacking, saith the Lord. Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth. In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE Lord OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.

Epistle (Sitting) Ephesians 2:11-22
Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands; That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world: But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby: And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh.
For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father. Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God; And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

People
And the apostles gathered themselves together unto Jesus, and told him all things, both what they had done, and what they had taught. And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat. And they departed into a desert place by ship privately. And the people saw them departing, and many knew him, and ran afoot thither out of all cities, and outwent them, and came together unto him. And Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he began to teach them many things. And when they had passed over, they came into the land of Gennesaret, and drew to the shore. And when they were come out of the ship, straightway they knew him, And ran through that whole region round about, and began to carry about in beds those that were sick, where they heard he was. And whithersoever he entered, into villages, or cities, or country, they laid the sick in the streets, and besought him that they might touch if it were but the border of his garment: and as many as touched him were made whole.

10 Prayers of the People
The People remain standing. The Minister and People pray responsively.
Father, we pray for thy holy Catholic Church;
That we all may be one.
Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve thee;
That thy name may be glorified by all people.
We pray for all bishops, priests and deacons;
That they may be faithful ministers of thy Word and Sacraments.
We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world;
That there may be justice and peace on the earth.
Give us grace to do thy will in all that we undertake;
That our works may find favor in thy sight.
Have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or trouble;
That they may be delivered from their distress.
Give to the departed eternal rest;
Let light perpetual shine upon them.
We praise thee for thy saints who have entered into joy;
May we also come to share in thy heavenly kingdom.
Let us pray for our own needs and those of others.
The People may add their own petitions and thanksgivings, silently or aloud.
After keeping silence for a space, the Celebrant adds the following or another concluding collect.
O Lord our God, accept the fervent prayers of thy people; in the multitude of thy mercies, look with compassion upon us and all who turn to thee for help; for thou art gracious, O lover of souls, and to thee we give glory, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.
Confession & Absolution The Deacon or Celebrant says
Ye who do truly and earnestly repent you of your sins, and are in love and charity with your neighbors, and intend to lead a new life, following the commandments of God, and walking from henceforth in his holy ways: Draw near with faith, and take this holy Sacrament to your comfort, and make your humble confession to Almighty God, devoutly kneeling.
Here the People kneel as able, or sit.
The Leader begins Almighty God, The People continue
Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Maker of all things, Judge of all men; We acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, which we from time to time most grievously have committed, by thought, word, and deed, against thy Divine Majesty, provoking most justly thy wrath and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings; the remembrance of them is grievous unto us, the burden of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; for thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please thee in newness of life, to the honour and glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Celebrant alone stands and says
Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins to all those who with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Sursum Corda
Facing the Altar, the Celebrant proceeds
It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto thee, O Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God. Through Jesus Christ our Lord; who on the first day of the week overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious Name; evermore praising thee, and saying,

Canon of the Mass
The People kneel as able, or sit. The Celebrant continues
All glory be to thee, Almighty God, our heavenly Father, for that thou, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to suffer death upon the Cross for our redemption; who made there (by his one oblation of himself once offered) a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again:
For in the night in which he was betrayed, he took Bread; and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, This is my body, which is given for you, do this in remembrance of me.
Likewise, after supper, he took the Cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying,
“Drink ye all of this; for this is my Blood of the New Testament which is shed for you, and for many, for the remission of sins; do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.”
Wherefore O Lord and heavenly Father, according to the institution of thy dearly beloved Son our Saviour Jesus Christ, we, thy humble servants, do celebrate and make here before thy Divine Majesty, with these thy holy gifts, which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; rendering unto thee most hearty thanks for the innumerable benefits procured unto us by the same.
14
And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness, mercifully to accept this, our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; most humbly beseeching thee to grant that, by the merits and death of thy Son Jesus Christ, and through faith in his blood, we, and all thy whole Church, may obtain remission of our sins, and all other benefits of his passion.
And here we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, our selves, our souls and bodies, to be a reasonable, holy, and living sacrifice unto thee; humbly beseeching thee, that we, and all others who shall be partakers of this Holy Communion, may worthily receive the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, be filled with thy grace and heavenly benediction, and made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him.
And although we are unworthy, through our manifold sins, to offer unto thee any sacrifice; yet we beseech thee to accept this our bounden duty and service; not weighing our merits, but pardoning our offences, through Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Ghost all honor and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end.

Non-communicants may wish to add the following prayer silently during this time.
In union, O Lord with the faithful at every altar of thy Church where the Holy Eucharist is now being celebrated, and in particular the altar of St. John’s, I offer thee praise and thanksgiving. I present to thee my soul and body, with the earnest wish that I may always be united to thee. And since I cannot now receive thee sacramentally, I beseech thee to come spiritually into my heart. I unite myself to thee, and embrace thee with all the affections of my soul. Let nothing ever separate thee from me.
May I live and die in thy love. Amen.
