Brief Industrial Profile of Nellore District

1.

General Characteristics of the District

Nellore ( now renamed as Potti Sriramulu Nellore district) is the southern-most district of Andhra Pradesh. The district is under sub-agro climatic zone with an average rain fall of 700-1000mm.It is endowed with rich soil suitable for agriculture. The soil comprises of black soil ( 23% ), 43% red soil, and 34% clay loamy. There are no perennial rivers in the district. The important rivers are Pennar, Kandaleru, Swarnamukhi.

1.1 Location & Geographical Area.

The district is located between 13.30- 15.6 Northern latitude and 70.5-80.16 eastern longitude. The geographical area is 1307600 Hectares.

1.2 Topography

The district is bounded on the north and south by Prakasam and Chittoor districts respectively, on the eastern side by Bay of Bengal and on the west by Veligonda hills bordering Kadapa district.

1.3 Availability of Minerals.

Nellore district is famous for good quality of Mica. The district is also rich in other minerals like quartz, silica, barites, vermiculate and laterite.

1.4 FOREST

The total forest area in the district is 2.62 lakh hectares. The forest area is concentrated in Venkatagiri, Udayagiri, and Podalakur mandals and is covered by bamboo, Cashew, Casurina, Eucalyptus and shrubs.

1.5 Administrative set up.

There are 3 revenue divisions in the district. Kavali, Gudur and Nellore divisions and 46 mandals

The structural composition of MSEs in the district is as given below: It is seen that Food and agro based industry, followed by Engineering based are the dominant groups of industries in the district, in terms of number of units, investment and employment, though the food products industry is more labour

intensive of the two. Miscellaneous products and services constitute 40.8% of the total number of units. Disaggregated data in this sub-head would have enabled us to analyse the contribution of small service establishments in the SSI sector.

There are 110 Large scale units in the state. Of these nearly one thirds ( 35Nos) are engaged in the manufacture of processed/ preserved sea food like shrimps, prawns and fish. These are concentrated along the coast in the district. The other major

product groups are Dairy products, granite slabs, pharmaceuticals etc.

3.8 Medium Scale Enterprises:

3.8.1 Medium scale enterprises were first defined in the MSMED Act 2006, as hose

industrial entities that ( in manufacturing sector) have an investment in Plant and Machinery, between Rs 5 crores and Rs 10 crores and, with investment in equipment ( in case of service sector) between Rs 2 to 5 crores.

No EMs for establishment of Medium scale enterprises were filed in the district since 2007

3.8.2 Major exportable items: The medium scale enterprises already in existence are engaged in the production and export of aqua products, granite slabs, engineering products and food ( dairy ) products.

3.9 Service enterprises

Nellore district has many industrial pockets which offer scope for development of industry related service enterprises. Service industry forms a sizeable portion of the MSME sector. Proximity of Nellore district, (especially, the southern parts which have a good concentration of industries) to the metro city of Chennai, which is an industrial hub, with all testing facilities is an advantage. However, there is still immense scope for establishment of service enterprises.

South Nellore district is an industrial belt, with many large scale industries including Public Sector Undertakings, and MNCs . There exists wide scope for service providing MSMEs to set up tool rooms, machine shops, testing centres, design centres, CAD/CAM centres, IT service providers, BPOs, etc in the industrial belt. 4 Existing Clusters in the district

4.1 Details of major clusters: Nellore district has a fascinating mix of traditional and modern industry, ranging from small artisan workshops to huge Multi National

companies.

Nellore district has many traditional handloom and handicraft clusters, some of which are dying clusters. The Leather puppets of Udayagiri , saw dust stuffed dolls and

wooden chariots of Varigonda, Thunga mats, and wooden cutlery cluster of Udayagiri, palm leaf products ( Garlands, hats, waste paper baskets, trays, artificial flowers, mats, etc) of Venkateswara nagar and fabric paintings of Thummur ( Naidupet) are traditional handicraft clusters in the district.

Nellore district is famed for its handlooms. Venkatagiri and Paturu saris are famed for their zari( brocade work), texture and colours. Around fifteen thousand families are engaged in these works in the areas of Venkatagiri, Kovur, Atmakur, Indukurpet, Podalakur, Sullurpet and Buchireddypalem. Weavers societies are present in these areas. The handloom industry is facing problems of shortage of working capital, market, etc.

1.1 General Details

Activated carbon is an inert material with porous structure. It is broadly classified on the basis of the following two applications.

1. Those used for adsorption of gases and vapours. (granular and material) 2. Those used for purification of liquids (usually powdered materials)

Activated carbon can be manufactured from wood, peat, hard coal and coconut shell.

1.2 Grades

Activated Carbon is generally produced in the following grades namely powder, granular pellatised grade and pharmaceutical grade.

Powder grade Used in batch type liquid systems

Granular and pelletised grade Used in vapour adsorbing gaseous systems.

Pharmaceutical Grades : Most Pharmaceutical Grades of carbon are made from Pinewood Charcoals, as they have very low ash and acid solubles.

1.3 Physical Properties

Porosity Porosity and the pore structure are the most

important characteristics of Activated carbon.

Size Size of the micropores is the deciding factor in

selective absorption.

Atleast two systems of pores of distinctly different sizes exist in every carbon particle.

Macropores (1000 to 2600 Deg A) : Acts as

large access ways for diffusion of particles.

Micropores (10 to 100 deg A) Contributes

towards large surface area which are responsible for absorption action.

Surface area From 200 to 2000 sq.m.per gram, depending

upon the method and manner of preparation.

Adsorption behaviour Depending on the process of activation, i.e.

steam, as or chemically activated, the Activated Carbon differ in their adsorption behaviour.

2.1 General Details

Activated carbon is a unique and effective agent for purification and for isolation and recovery of trace materials.

During the last two to three decades, treatment with active carbon has become an important unit process for separations and purifications in the food, pharmaceuticals, sugar, chemical and other processing industries.

Activated carbon can be produced from any carbonaceous material, which on activation attain porous structure and consequently a large surface area.

Raw materials such as wool, lignite, woods, coconut-shells, agricultural waste like bagasse, rice husk are generally used for the manufacture of Activated carbons. Raw materials having high carbon and low ash content are preferred.

Coconut shell has been found to be most suitable raw material for making gas adsorption grade Activated carbon.

The shell char is activated with direct steam and fired with liquid fuel in temperature of 1000 to 12000 deg.C in specially designed rotary kiln in controlled conditions to obtain granulated activated carbon.

AGARBATHIS

INTRODUCTION

Agarbathis (incense sticks) form part and parcel of the traditional Hindu practice of offering prayers in temples and other places of worship. In modern days, perfumed sticks are also used in houses and in other public places as air-fresheners and/or mosquito repellents. The demand for agarbathi is increasing both in the domestic and export markets because of the improvement in quality and increase in the types of products. India is the largest producer of agarbath in the world.

The population in India is always growing at the rate of 1% per annum. The people belong to different communities and religions. Agrbathis are being consumed for worshipping God. The word agarbathi reminds an Indian about a temple, a shrine with sacred perfume and holy atmosphere of the place of worship. They are used while opening commercial establishments in foreign countries also where Agarbathi is used abundantly.

The agarbathi manufacturing can be started in cottage scale with low investment. Experienced artisan can make about 400 to 500 agarbathis per day. The industry is mainly concentrated in Bangalore and Mysore areas. This can be started profitably in other areas also.

USES AND APPLICATION

Agarbathi is used by people of all religions in our country for performing religious rites and ceremonies as well as for auspicious occasions.

MARKET

The demand for the agarbathi, a consumable item, is growing well and in a country like India with private consumption expenditure growing up he demand for this consumable item is also going up. Agarbathi is a source of incense for which the raw materials are available abundantly in our country. The agarbathis are being exported also.

INTRODUCTION

Aluminium Vessels are widely used by common population in India. With the growth of population in the country the usage of Aluminium vessels is increasing. Aluminium is a versatile metal, it has properties of high strength light weight, and it is fast replacing stainless steel, bronze, brass, etc. It is strong, elegant, durable and non-rustic in nature. The Aluminium vessls are cheaper compared to stainless steel vessels and in country where people with low and middle income are more the consumption of aluminium vessels are increasing. The aluminium vessels are also replaced frequently at cheaper cost.

PRODUCT USES AND SPECIFICATIONS

The products cover all types of aluminium utensils used in households, hotels, hospitals, canteens and other places for cooking The products are manufactured in different shapes and designs which are popular in the market.Bureau of Indian Standards has prescribed IS:1660(part I) for Wrought Aluminium Utensils.

MARKET POTENTIAL

The number of lower-middle income groups to high income groups in the country has been increasing over a period of time. By 2006-07 it is estimated that the lower income group who are having a present income of Rs.22550 and below per annum will come down to 20% of the total households in India.

The per capita consumption of aluminium in India is 0.7 kgs as against over 20 kgs in most of the developed and developing world economies. The metal has a long working life due to its propensity for recycling. Recycled metal requires significantly less amounts of energy for manufacturing of primary aluminium.he circles used for aluminium vessels are recycled materials.

Just to put things in perspective, the recycling of aluminium scrap requires 5% of the energy required for primary smelting, which is astoundingly lower, considering that power is such a high cost component.

After a 3% growth production growth witnessed globally, growth has continued in the range of 3%-4% in 2003. In 2002, global aluminium consumption showed a sharp growth rate of over 5%, which was primarily a factor of the Chinese demand for the metal.

On the domestic front, a fall of about 1% was registered in production in FY02. However, the consumption improved by 4%-5%.. With the Government focusing towards attaining GDP growth rates above 8%, the key consuming industries are likely to lead the way, which could positively impact aluminium consumption. Domestic demand is estimated to grow by 6% - 8% YoY.

The improvement in the economy in FY03 had its positive impact on the aluminium industry, which can be gauged from the fact that production increased by 7% in FY03, while the consumption registered a growth of 5%. During FY03, the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) grew by 5.8%, which was a strong improvement over FY02's 2.6% growth. Coming into FY04, IIP registered a growth of 5.3% in 1QFY04 as compared to 4.3% in the corresponding period last year. The domestic demand in the current fiscal is expected to be remain firm.

3. Manufacturing Process

Aluminium circles are placed in the ties attached with the exterior of the spinning lathe. Then this circle is held tightly with the help of the centre and drawn into the tie shape with the help of the tools by manual operation. Then releasing the centre, the vessel is taken out. This process is continued for eight hours by one skilled labourer. Then this vessel is brightened by polishing the vessel by means of polish motor. For this purpose the soap and cotton wheels are used. Then the brightened vessels are packed in polyethene papers and sent to market after the vessels are fitted with handles.

4. Raw Material

The main raw material required is Aluminium circles which are available from aluminium manufacturers and dealers. The consumables are soap and cotton which are available locally.

5. Land & Building

A rented place with 2000 sqft. area is required. The monthly rent is estimated at Rs.10,000 and also an advance of Rs.1,00,000.
