The Standards include an updated cycle that encourages the use of an adaptive management process - the integration of project and program design, management, and monitoring to systematically test assumptions, adapt, and learn. This process emphasizes systematic monitoring and learning (as opposed to trial and error) to help project teams learn what conservation actions are working or not working and how to improve them. The cycle and the accompanying Standards are designed to apply to smaller scale projects and broad scale programs, as well as to site-driven and thematic projects or programs. The Standards also provide a basis for conservation project and program audits.
