Person Notes: MOHNOLEHIGHVIEW CHRISTIANIA LUTH. CHURCH & CEMETERY, EUREKA TWSP. DAKOTA COUNTY, MN. COMPILED BY JANE GILBERTSON NELSON. Eureka lost one of its pioneer settlers Sunday, December 16, 1923 when Ole Mohn died at the age of

eighty-nine years, one month and twenty-seven days. Funeral services were held at the Christiania Lutheran Free Church in Eureka. Burial was in the Christiania cemetery. Ole and his wife Augusta, who survives her husband, were the parents of eight children, four of whom died in infancy. Those that survive their father are daughter Anna Marie Mohn; sons Olaf Mohn, Christopher Mohn and Oscar Mohn. 10-19-1834/12-16-1923

---(NOTES from Orlyn Olson: At age 70 Ole was severely burned in a grass fire near his home. For several months, because of those burns to his lower body, he had to wear something like a barrel because he couldn't stand anything touching him where he was burned. Mom says it never really healed, she said the house never lost the smell of burnt flesh. He eventually was able to wear skirts, which he wore until his death. Ole's house was within a 100' or so of where Wallace and Gladys lived.

---The following is a brief summary of the Norwegian settlement near Chub Lake, Dakota County, Minnesota. The first known group settled in the area on July 18, 1854. Lars Mohn, a brother to Ole Mohn, came to the area in July of 1856. On April 24, 1860 articles of

(5)

incorporation for the Christiania Lutheran Church were accepted. Among the original members' families were Lars Mohn and Torger Juvland. The first church was completed (a log building) on July 3, 1865 at a cost of $600. The second and present church was completed in 1878 at a cost of $3600 (source: Christiania Centennial Booklet).
