See, I have inscribed you on the palms of my hands; “ Isaiah 49:16a

“For it was you who formed my inward parts; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.

I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” Psalm 139:13-14a

I am just..

I wonder when Kelley Johnson, Miss Colorado, stepped onstage to deliver her original oratory piece for the talent portion of the Miss American pageant if she had an inkling as to what the response would be. In a truly courageous move, she stepped out of the traditional expectations for talent on this show and highlighted a topic near and dear to her - her work as a nurse and some of the affects of the disease of Alzheimer's. I applaud her for this. I believe there are multiple reasons why this monologue has caused such an uproar. One of them, I believe, is because it strikes so close to home for many of us.

“I am just a nurse,” say Kelley. I am just… How many times have you heard or thought or felt a version of that phrase? I can’t do that, I am just… Don’t ask him, he is just…. You can’t be friends with her, she is just… Well, I would but I am just… I guess I am not important, I am just… It doesn’t matter how he feels, he is just… Nobody really cares, I am just…

I am just… This phrase breaks my heart because it is usually used to put down yourself or someone else. This phrase causes deep pain in a person’s soul and doesn't allow them to see the wonderful person they truly are. This phrase keeps individuals in a certain mold or box because of the expectations placed on them by others. THIS PHRASE SHOULD BE ELIMINATED FROM OUR VOCABULARY!

Here is the true deal. Nobody is just a just! Each and everyone of us were knit together by our Creator. We were fearfully and wonderfully made. God’s Word is full of texts that proclaim to us that God has chosen us and named and claimed us in our baptisms. We are created in the image of God. We are one body of Christ. Each of us have been given different gifts and skills and resources to use to build up the body. All members of the body are needed and are important in order for the body to function and grow! NO ONE IS JUST A JUST!!! So get out there and do your thing! Live into the person that God created you to be.

And if you can’t eliminate that phrase from your vocabulary then proudly proclaim in a loud voice -

I am just a fearfully and wonderfully made child of God!

Just some food for thought. Here’s to another great month of ministry at OSL and in your communities!

God’s Trustees

Managing all of Life and Life's Resources for God's Purposes!

"

Stewardship...that's about budgets and fund-raising. Right?"

WRONG! Few biblical teachings are more misunderstood than stewardship. Although

stewardship education is not easy, it is vitally important for the ministry of God's church. Be-ginning Oct. 18, we will journey together through Scripture and discover in a deeper and maybe different way what it means to be trusted by God with all that He has created. By the end, we will have grown in faith as well as in the awareness of the joyous privilege of being God's trustees!

Oct. 18: Wow! God Trusts Me!

Oct. 25: What's All in the Bag God Has Given Me?!

Nov. 1: Trustees! People with a Purpose! (We will also honor the Saints who have gone before us at this service.)

Nov. 8: Trusting and Trustworthy

Nov. 15: Trustees, Let Love Shine Through! Nov. 22: To God Be the Glory

OSL MISSION OF THE MONTH FOR OCTOBER:

Operation Christmas Child

Are you ready to make a difference in the life of a child?

“Yes, as a matter of fact I am.” Great! Have we got an opportunity for you. As was mentioned in the September Newsletter, we are partnering with Samaritan’s Purse to sponsor Operation Christmas Child at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. There are several ways you can participate:

1. Fill a shoe box and bring it back to OSL on or before SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 1. After they are blessed during worship, these Christmas boxes will then travel through a series of hands and eventually be placed in the open arms of an excited child who will receive the story of Jesus’ birth in their own language along with a box full of love from you. Our goal this year is to fill 100 boxes!!

2. Give a monetary donation through the Mission of the Month. This money will be used by Samaritan’s Purse to help defray the cost of shipping the boxes. Samaritan’s Purse recommends a $7.00 donation per box.

3. Pray - Pray for those who are filling the boxes, those who hands the boxes will travel through, including the volunteers and staff of Samaritan’s Purse and those who will receive the boxes.

1. Take part in one, two or all three of these options!!

If you would like to learn more about Operation Christmas Child, go to http://

samaritanspurse.org where you will find the link to Operation Christmas Child. If you have questions about filling the boxes, please visit with Pastor Deb. Thank you for being a

blessing to children and their families around the world through this ministry.

OSL Calling Committee –

Your Call Committee is in the process of

receiving Pastor’s names and profiles. As

the Call Committee receives these profiles

we will review each one carefully with

prayer and discernment. This process

could still take us 6 months to 2 years.

Please keep our church and your Call

Committee in your prayers. This is your

any of us if you have questions or

concerns.

Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America”

or WELCA.

What is WELCA? It’s an easy way to say Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Amer-ica. Quite a mouthful, we know. Our organization includes Lutheran women who gather in over 7,000 locations in the U.S. and the Caribbean, for service, study, advocacy, fellowship and more! WELCA embraces all kinds of ministries that support our mission of mobilizing women to act boldly on their faith in Jesus Christ. There is a place for you in Women of the ELCA. This Fall, we have begun a 3-session study on speed and slowness, “Slow Faith”. We will be examining how the Kingdom of God moves slowly, yet we are asked to move with ever great-er speed. In Octobgreat-er, we will be studying session 2, “Make Haste O Lord”. Thgreat-ere is an extra copy of our “Gather” magazine in the church office. This has the bible study published in it. Please feel free to pick this copy up and join us.

Also this Fall, we will be putting together “School Kits” that will be sent all over the world. These school supplies mean the difference between getting an education or not for many children. Right now there is an urgent need for these school supplies. There is a box in the narthex for these items. Please watch for more information in our bulletin and newslet-ter. We will be asking the whole congregation to help.

Our next WELCA meeting will be on October 20th beginning at 8:45 A.M. with our ongoing

study of the “Old Testament” and then at 9:30 A.M. our regular meeting begins. Our Hostess for this meeting will be Judy Stanley and our bible study leader will be Chic Schneekloth.

Praying andCaring forOne Another

Praying for one another is vital to our community of faith and part of being a member of the priesthood of all believers. If you or a family member wishes to be included in this printed prayer list, please contact Peg in the church office.

families and friends of: Candace Walsh.

We pray for the health and healing of those ill or hospitalized and their caregivers, including:

Ken Diers’; Roger Downen; Perry, Paula Jensen’s Dad; Geraldine Pedersen; Don Aduddell, Steve Hammer, Joy Moore; Jerry Puckett; Dan Miller.

We pray for those in special circumstances, including: Military members, Law Enforcement officers, First Responders, those affected by floods and forest fires, and those fleeing their homelands to escape violence.

Being Lutheran - Worship

A foundation of faith for everything we do

The Worship and Music Committee of OSL recognizes that people are engaged in worship in different ways. In an attempt to meet the needs of our worshippers, three different styles of worship will be

planned each month. The framework will remain the same – Gather, Word, Meal (on 1st and 3rd Sundays)

and Sent. What happens around that framework will look slightly different. The first and second Sundays of each month will include more formal liturgy using one of the ten liturgical settings available in the hymnal. The third Sunday will be a more woven style with a less formal spoken liturgy. The fourth Sunday will continue to feel more contemporary as our Praise Team leads us in worship. The fifth Sunday will continue to include a service of healing. All of these styles of worship are very Lutheran and God will be present as we gather together each week to worship and praise God, support one another and grow in faith.

‘The rest of the story’ will continue in the November Newsletter.

$6.619 $6,284 $75,158 $53,441 $220 It is time to create a new pictorial directory for Our Savior’s Lutheran Church? Sage Studios has agreed to capture all of the wonderful smiles of our congregation a will be photographing OSL members for a new directory on Saturday the 14th, and Sunday the 15th of November. What a perfect opportunity for you and your family to get a new professional portrait and to help us create a beautiful and up-to-date directory listing for our church and its members. It has been a long time since our last directory, so we would like to have everyone participate this year. It is also the perfect item to order any gifts or cards for the holidays. Russell Jensen of Sage Studios has agreed to offer a discounted rate on any prints ordered and a portion of all sales will go toward the printing cost of the directory.

Sessions are limited, so hurry and sign up for one of the first available times today. Sessions are free and all images will be available for purchase online the following week and at a special OSL discounted rate. Sign up sheets will be posted and you can contact the church office to schedule for a time that is right for you and your family.

Call or Sign up today. Sage Studios, 255-4977 or the church office at 255-4662.
