Once you have completed your foundation degree or HNC you can opt to top up your qualification (e.g. to a full honours degree) or walk away with a recognised and respected intermediate HE qualification.

Flexible modes of study - Most courses can be studied in full or part-time modes to fit around your lifestyle and commitments.

Learners on courses awarded by our partner universities are able to access facilities and services at four College centres and also at our partner University campuses. This gives you the opportunity to combine the benefits of studying in a College environment such as small class sizes, regular access to your tutors and affordable tuition fees, with the academic and social benefits of accessing the facilities at a large University.

The College and the University have recently extended their existing partnership to collaborate on the development of a suite of innovative foundation degrees and 1 + 2 degree models. The University is a close neighbour of the College, making accessing University services and facilities particularly convenient for learners studying on our University of Salford Foundation Degrees and 1 + 2 degree models.

The University is located in two main areas of the city: at Salford Crescent, a short distance from Manchester city centre, and at MediaCityUK. Both campuses are easily accessible from all College centres by public transport. Learners studying on University of Salford courses can access the following services through the University:

The College has offered programmes in partnership with the University of Bolton for well over a decade. The University is a short drive or a bus ride from Walkden Sixth Form Centre where our Bolton programmes are delivered. The College currently offers

Teacher Education and Early Years programmes in partnership with the University. There are well established progression routes for learners who wish to continue their studies at the Bolton main campus.

Learners studying on University of Bolton courses can access the following services through the University:

Location: Pendleton Sixth Form Centre

Mode: Full-time

Duration: 1 year

COURSE OUTLINE

The course has three stages:

Stage 1: Exploratory – Through a structured programme of drawing and visual studies, learners will identify their skills, strengths and interests. They will also develop practical abilities in 2D and 3D, helping to make an informed choice of specialist study.

Stage 2: Pathway – Learners choose to study one broad art and design discipline, such as graphic design, textiles, fine art, animation, photography or 3D design.

Stage 3: Confirmatory – Learners will bring together their skills, knowledge and understanding in art, design and communication to carry out a major project, resulting in an exhibition.

ASSESSMENT

Learners will be assessed on a continuous basis throughout the course. Methods employed will include assessment of responses to set briefs which will be used to help develop a portfolio and assessment of exhibition and curation.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Applicants should hold a Level 3 qualification in a relevant art and design subject (at least 1 AS Level at grade D or above or Level 3 Diploma Pass). All applicants will be interviewed and expected to bring a portfolio of their work.

Mature applicants (over the age of 21) will be considered on an individual basis. Personal practice or relevant work experience will be considered.

Art and Design

Level 4 Pre-Degree Foundation Diploma

This intensive one year diploma allows learners to explore the many areas of art and design

before choosing one in which to specialise. It is ideal preparation for entry on to an art and

design based degree course.

Graphic Design

Foundation Degree

This course provides an opportunity to develop the intellectual, creative and technical skills

required to be a successful contemporary practitioner in the graphic design industry.

Location: Pendleton Sixth Form Centre

Mode: Full-time

Duration: 2 years

COURSE OUTLINE

Learners will be provided with training in the essential skills of visual communication and will have the opportunity to explore a range of visual communication forms including illustration, print, typography, photography and computer

aided graphic design. Through this integrated approach, learners will be provided with a foundation in the skills required for a range of careers in graphic design and related fields. The course is assessed largely through practical work produced in response to time specific and industry-related briefs. Employer and client engagement will be a key feature of the course; learners will develop portfolios in response to client and agency briefs. At the end of the course learners will set up their own professional exhibition.

Practical work is supported with study of art and design history and contemporary professional practice.

ASSESSMENT

There will be a focus on portfolio development and live project briefs, that mirror industry based scenarios and group work.

Applicants should hold a Level 3 qualification in a relevant subject equivalent to 200 UCAS points (e.g. BTEC Extended Diploma MMP Profile) and Level 2 qualifications in English and Maths. Mature applicants (over the ages of 21) will be considered on an individual basis. All applicants will be interviewed and expected to bring a portfolio of their work.

and understanding of core business practices central to the operation of all businesses, as

well as specialist knowledge and understanding related to their chosen specialist area.

COURSE OUTLINE

The foundation degree aims to build awareness of business practices linked to your chosen specialism. Learners will study core aspects of business related to your chosen pathway as well as distinct specialist modules. They will also apply their knowledge and understanding to practical projects and the work environment as part of the work based placement module. The course can be studied in a full or part-time mode. Learners can apply to join the final year of related degree programme on completetion of the foundaton degree if they would like to futher their studies.

ASSESSMENT

Assessment methods include examinations (including multiple choice and closed book exams), written coursework, presentations and practical assessments such as observations of work based practice.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

160 UCAS Tariff points equivalent to CC at A-Level or MPP BTEC Extended Diploma in a related subject.

Grade C or above at GCSE (or Level 2 equivalent) in both Maths and English are required.

Equivalent professional or academic qualifications (such as NVQ 3 in Business or a related sector) will also be considered. Applications from those holding non-tariff point qualifications in relevant subject areas (such as work based NVQ3s) are welcome. Mature applicants (over the ages of 21) with appropriate experience will be considered in line with the University’s APL procedure.

The first year of the programme is delivered at FutureSkills, the final two years are delivered by our partner University.

Assessment methods will vary by pathway but will include written coursework, presentations, practical assessment, observations of work based learning and examinations.

All applicants should have a Grade C or above at GCSE (or Level 2 equivalent) in both Maths and English. Games Design

Foundation Degree

The programme offers the opportunity to develop the intellectual, creative and technical skills

required to be a successful contemporary practitioner in games design and development.

COURSE OUTLINE

The qualification is aimed at those who wish to pursue freelance work or employment in a range of careers in the games design industry.

Foundation degrees are a good stepping stone for learners who wish to pursue BA (Hons) Degree qualifications. On completion of the foundation degree learners can apply for direct entry into year 3 (or if studied part-time, Level 6) of a computing and games design (or related) degree or a BA top up programme.

Systems Development

HNC

The HNC covers the key knowledge, understanding and practical skills required in the ICT

sector.

Location: FutureSkills

Modes: Full-time and part-time

Duration: 1 year (Full-time) 2 year (Part-time)

COURSE OUTLINE

The qualification will focus on the areas of web development and programming, providing the skills needed to design and create solutions for existing and developing businesses either through the use of web authoring and scripting software or the latest programming languages. Skills in project planning and

management will be developed to compliment the practical and technical skills developed throughout the course.

ASSESSMENT

Construction

HNC

The Higher National Certificate (HNC) is a recognised qualification in the construction

industry. The HNC will allow progression on to further higher education programmes or

into employment. The course is two years and entails internal and external adjudication of

coursework produced throughout the course. This two year course is offered on a Thursday

daytime or a Tuesday evening.

Location: City Skills Sixth Form Centre

Mode: Part-time

Duration: 2 years

There are a range of modular units which include:

ASSESSMENT

Learners will be assessed throughout the course. Assessment methods include essays, reports, group presentations and project work.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

The HNC is open to anyone over 18 years. Entry requirements are two A-Levels or a National Certificate/ Diploma in Construction. Maths and English at GCSE grades A to C (or equivalent) are recommended. Several years continuous employment in a construction-related industry can also provide sufficient entry requirements. Applicants will typically be asked to an interview and requested to complete a C Skills assessment.

Construction and the

Built Environment

Higher Apprenticeship

The Higher Apprenticeship is designed to develop managers in the construction sector and

is an ideal way to balance work with continuous professional development for those who

are already working in the sector. Learners will study the HND in Construction and the Built

Environment alongside studying for an NVQ Level 5 Diploma in Construction Management.

Duration: 3 years

ASSESSMENT

A range of assessment methods are utilised including written coursework, group projects and presentations. The NVQ element will largely be assessed through work based visits and the completion of related course work.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Learners should hold a relevant Level 3 qualification in a construction related subject. Maths and English at GCSE grades A to C (or equivalent) are recommended. Several years continuous employment in a

construction-related industry can also provide sufficient entry requirements. Applicants may be asked to complete a C Skills assessment.

Professional Graduate

Certificate in Education

(PGCE) and Certificate

in Education

The Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) and Certificate in Education is an

initial teacher training programme for those who wish to teach learners aged 14 and over in

a FE or skills setting. The PGCE is aimed at graduates who wish to teach on courses where a

relevant degree is required. The Certificate of Education is aimed at those who wish to teach

vocational or skills based qualifications in subject areas where a degree is not typically

required.

The programme is awarded by the University of Bolton and is accredited by the Education and

Training Foundation (ETF).

Location: Walkden Sixth Form Centre

Mode: Full-time and part-time

Duration: 1 year (Full-time) 2 years (Part-time)

COURSE OUTLINE

Programme content is informed by national professional standards for teachers in the FE and Skills sector. Taught sessions will include group workshops, individual and small group practical activities and structured exercises and discussions led by the tutor. In addition learners will be required to undertake 100 hours of teaching practice and will also be expected to engage in independent research outside of class time.

Modules include:

ASSESSMENT

Learners will complete a variety of written tasks such as reports, assignments and portfolio submissions. They will also give individual and group presentations. Professional practice is assessed partly through teaching observations (including 4 graded observations).

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

PGCE:

Applicants must have a Bachelor Degree or equivalent in a relevant subject (linked to intended teaching practice) and relevant work

experience if teaching vocational courses.

Certificate in Education:

Applicants are expected to hold a relevant qualification at Level 3 or above linked to the subject you wish to teach. For some subject areas this means a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) Level 3 whilst for others it may be an NVQ Level 4 or a Higher National Diploma. Applicants will also be required to obtain a DBS enhanced disclosure clearance; complete, and have approved, a health declaration; provide satisfactory references and demonstrate the potential to successfully complete the programme at interview.

Early Years Childhood

Studies

Foundation Degree

The Foundation Degree in Early Years and Childhood studies is aimed at those wishing to

progress their careers in childcare, teaching and related areas. Learners who successfully

complete the foundation degree can move on to a BSc (Hons) top-up programme offered at

the University of Bolton’s main campus.

Location: Walkden Sixth Form Centre

Mode: Part-time

Duration: 2 years and 1 term

COURSE OUTLINE

The course comprises of twelve modules that include the study of children’s development and learning, aspects related to the roles and responsibilities of the childcare worker and becoming a reflective practitioner. Study is closely linked to work practice and therefore you need to be working in a childcare setting.

ASSESSMENT

Assessment methods will include producing essays, critical reports, group and individual presentations. Learners will also be observed in work-based settings and will be required to produce reflections on their work based practice.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Applicants should hold a Level 3 qualification in a relevant subject equivalent to 240 UCAS points (e.g. BTEC Extended Diploma Merit Profile) and Level 2 qualifications in English and Maths. Mature applicants who do not hold a Level 3 qualification, but have relevant experience in the childcare sector, will be considered on an individual basis.

All applicants must be employed/ secure employment relevant to the sector (paid or voluntary) for a minimum of two days a week. All learners must be interviewed by the course tutor before enrolment.

Health and Social Care

HNC

The HNC in Health and Social Care is a vocational programme that references professional

body requirements and national occupational standards.

Location: Walkden Sixth Form Centre

Mode: Full-time and part-time

Duration: 1 year

COURSE OUTLINE

This qualification gives a firm grounding in the key concepts and practical skills required in the health and care sector. It is suitable for those seeking to enhance their employment prospects in the sector or as a stepping stone to further higher level study.

Learners will study the following core units:

Care Practice

• Health and Safety in the Workplace

• Personal and Professional Development

• Working in Partnership

Possible optional units include:

ASSESSMENT

Learners will be assessed on a continuous basis throughout the year. Assessment will include written coursework and project work. Learners will be observed in their health and social care setting for the Personal Professional Development unit and will be required to produce a work based portfolio.

Applicants should hold a Level 3 qualification in a relevant subject equivalent to 200 UCAS points (e.g. BTEC Extended Diploma MMP Profile) and Level 2 qualifications in English and Maths. The foundation degree is aimed at advanced learners who strive to be multi-skilled

The Foundation Degree in Musical Theatre is aimed at those who wish to pursue career

opportunities in Musical Theatre and related areas of the Arts. Learners will develop

performance techniques in contemporary theatre, voice, jazz, tap and ballet and acting

through song.

COURSE OUTLINE

The history of Musical Theatre and the context of contemporary Musical Theatre will be explored in years one and two. These modules will be linked to practical work, such as taking part in productions from a set era. The qualification will also include dance, physical theatre, vocal (acting and singing) workshops, plus one to one sessions. There will be an emphasis on key performance skills to help prepare learners for the audition process, such as developing their singing repertory. Learners will take part in a number of performances each year as part of the College Performance Season. This will culminate in development of a learner-led touring company in year two. They will also have the opportunity to take part in an end of year industry showcase.

Learners who successfully complete the programme will be able to apply to top-up the qualification to a full BA Honours (one final year of study).

TUITION FEE LOAN

Part-time learners can apply for a tuition fee loan to help them manage the cost of course fees.

Part-time learners only start repaying their loan when they are earning more than £21,000. Repayments begin in the April four years after you start your course. This applies even if you’re still studying. Learners can pay back all or some of their loan at any time without incurring an early repayment charge. Please note that the maintenance loans and grants available for full-time learners are not available for those studying in a part-time mode. It is important to do your sums before joining the course to make sure you

can support yourself whilst studying. If you do claim a Tuition Fee Loan and decide to withdraw from the course after the first six weeks of term you may be liable for part/full payment of the fees and will need to repay any Tuition Fee Loan accordingly.

Additional Support

There is a range of additional support available for learners with a disability who are studying towards a Higher Education course. Disabled Learners’ Allowances (DSAs) are grants to help with the extra costs a learner may face due to a disability. Conditions covered include longterm illnesses, mental health conditions or specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia. If you qualify for DSAs, they are paid on top of any standard learner finance you receive. You can apply to Student Finance England for DSAs when you apply for student finance. The amount you can get is not affected by your household income, and the allowances do not have to be paid back.
