Remote Access – Start-up Guide

Getting Started
NGD provides easy access to all your Cheshire East documents and applications whilst not in the office as long as an internet connection is available. It not only will look the same but will also have the same functionality you have in the office. This document only covers remote connectivity for non Cheshire East Council PC’s and Laptops
To use this way to connect you will need one of two ways to give you special secure access (Fig. 1)

Installing Software
N.B.
We recommend to read this document fully before starting the software install
2.1 Getting Started
The next step is to install the required software on your PC/Laptop; this is one time setup and you will not be required to be install it again, unless you use a different PC
The following couple of sections cover the most frequently used scenario’s Windows 8 (IE 11) Windows 7 with (IE 9, 10 and 11) or Windows XP (IE 8) . If you are not sure which version of internet explorer you are using, on the menu click help then “About Internet Explorer” or if that option does not exist click on the cog in the top right corner then the “About Internet Explorer”. Either of these options will display your version If you are still experiencing problems finding your browser version, navigate to
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/internet-explorer/which-version-am-i-using (Fig. 3) or would like some further information before starting the installation in the first instance look at the “Frequently Asked Questions” (FAQ) section of this of this chapter.

2.2
Windows 8 users only
On the Windows 8 Start page also known as “Metro View” (Fig. 4) select the Internet Explorer tile

On the menu bar select the spanner in the circle and then click “View in the desktop”. The new view will show Internet Explorer in the same format IE 8, 9 and 10 (Fig. %)

For Windows 8 users this process will have to be followed every time you wish to use remote access as remote access does not support the “Metro View” in (Fig. 4)

Internet Explore 11 users one time setup
N.B.
Windows 8 users should follow the instructions in section 2.2 before you continue, unless you
have already done so.
All users of Internet Explorer 11 must perform a one time setup before continuing
Open Internet Explorer and click on the cog in the top right hand corner and from the menu select “Compatibility View Settings” (Fig. 6)

In the “Add this website” field type cheshire.gov.uk click “Add” then “Close”

Installation for
Windows 8, Windows 7 and Windows XP with Internet Explorer 8 or higher
N.B.
If you use Internet Explorer 11 (see section 2.1 if you are not sure) you must first follow the instruction in section 2.3 if you have

2.4.1 Secure Login
In Internet Explorer go to www.clickintocheshireeast.com
You will be presented with your login page (Fig. 8)

Use the same credentials you would in the office or on your laptop for the username and password but before click “Sign In” enter your 6 digit “Token Password” in the last field and click sign in. You 6 digit “Token Password” is generated using the Physical or Soft (See Fig. 1)
2.4.2 Loading Components

N.B Windows 7 users :
The box give Java information (Fig. 11) will not appear if you are a windows 7 user. Instead the message “This website wants to install the following add-on: JuniperSetupClient.cab from ‘Juniper Networks, Inc” will appear at the bottom of the screen straight away (Fig. 10 ) click install to continue

After a approximately 20 seconds the following message will appear. (Fig. 11) It is important the following steps are completed in the correct order
Click the:
“Do not show this message again” check box (Fig.11 – A) Then
“OK” (Fig. 11 – B) Then finally
“Install” (Fig. 11 – C)
Depending on the version of Windows you are using a box titled “Internet Explorer – Security Warning” or “User Account Control” will appear (Fig. 12) click “Install” or “Yes” as appropriate to continue

After clicking “Install “ or “Yes” (Fig 12) in the next box titled “Setup Control – Warning” will appear after approximately 10 seconds, click “Always” (Fig. 13)

You will now see a message which explains that Host Checker is being installed and after a few seconds a new screen will appear (Fig 14)
2.4.2 XenApp

Click the “I agree with the Citrix license agreement” check box and then the install button
A prompt will appear at the bottom of the screen to start the installation of the “CitrixRecieverWeb.exe” (Fig. 15)

The prompt “Do you want to allow the following program to make changes to this computer?” will appear. Click “Yes” (Fig. 16)

After a approximately 20 seconds you will be asked to install “Citrix Receiver”. Click “Install” (Fig. 16)

Wait for the “Citrix Receiver” screen (Fig. 17) to finish loading. When the “Citrix Receiver” has finished loading, the window will close automatically
N.B. Some PC’s/Laptops may show a “Windows Features” dialogue box (Fig. 18 ), if this is the case click “Skip this installation” to continue
you can then click the allow button (Fig. 19)

On the next pop up screen titled “Internet Explorer Security” (Fig. 20) check the box “Do not show me the warning for this program again” and click allow

The connect screen will now be available (Fig. 21)

You are now fully connected and will not have to go through the setup again. Logging in will take to directly the you option. The connect screen will give you two option’s (Fig. 21 );
Option A: “Cheshire East Desktop”, this will load NGD as full screen and you will be able to see your personal desktop. To return to you desktop Log off or Disconnect
Option B: “Cheshire East Desktop 90%”, this will load your NGD session using 90% of your desktop. You will still be able to use you local PC/Laptop as normal and you will able to minimise NGD if you wish

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q. Are there any prerequisites I need before I can install the Remote Access software
A. The remote access software may load on the versions of software you are using, but if you are experiencing problems it needs to be confirmed that:
Access to the Internet is available and working All the latest Microsoft Service Packs are installed The latest version of Java is installed
You have full Administrator rights on the PC/Laptop you are using Q. Which Microsoft operating systems are supported

Q. Can I connect to NGD with my Apple MAC
A. Yes, although it is not supported by the service desk, it is possible to configure Safari to connect to NGD. The following instructions need to be followed
Launch Safari
Browse to your SSL VPN web site Go in to Preferences under Safari
Page Click on the Security button
Ensure that Plugs-Ins are allowed Click on ‘Manage Website Settings’
Click on ‘Java’ on the left-hand side of the screen
On the right-hand side, choose the ‘Currently Open Websites’ (your SSL VPN web site) and click on the drop-down box
Choose ‘Allow Always’ and ‘Run in Unsafe Mode’ (Choose TRUST if a prompt is displayed) Click on Done
Close the preferences window
Go to section 2.4 and follow the instructions Q. Can I access anything when connected to NGD
A. All Cheshire East security polices, rules, and acceptable use apply when you are accessing the corporate network.
Q. Are there any times when I cannot use NGD
A. NGD guarantees access from Monday to Friday inclusive. NGD is not guaranteed over the weekend as this is the maintenance window. It is essential that you completely log off prior to the weekend Q. Can the service desk fix problems related to remote access?
A. The service desk cannot troubleshoot problems with personal computers but will support remote access on a reasonable endeavors basis
Q. How fast will NGD be on my computer?
A. From out tests NGD will perform well in most scenarios but ultimately the solution is only a good as the underlying hardware and speed of the internet link
