NY State Commissioner’s Regulations [NYS CR 100.1] provide the

following definitions:

>

Unit of study: at least 180 minutes of instruction per week throughout the

school year, or the equivalent.

>

Unit of credit: earned by the mastery of the learning outcomes set forth in

a New York State-developed or locally developed syllabus for a given high

school subject, after a student has had the opportunity to complete a unit of

study in the given subject matter area.

NY State Commissioner’s Regulations require students to earn at

least 22 units of credit and pass the 5 required Regents exams to

receive a high school diploma.

become eligible for an IEP Diploma provided one of the following

conditions is met:

Upon reaching end of the year in which the student turns 21 and has

achieved goals of the IEP, as stipulated by the Commissioner

ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS (ELL) /

LIMITED ENGLISH PROFICIENT (LEP) STUDENTS

Per state regulation, ELL and LEP students are entitled to certain supports in

order to meet all diploma requirements.

Effective September 2008, former ELL students may receive testing accommodations for up to two years after achieving

proficiency on the NYSESLAT (if proficiency was achieved prior to Spring 2007).
