Laurel Class Home Learning

Summer Term Week 7 (Week beginning 08.06.20)

Dear Laurel Class,

It has been lovely to hear from you this week and I have really enjoyed finding out about and seeing some of the fantastic learning that you have been doing at home! You have been very creative when completing your Arctic scenes and I have seen some brilliant practise of multiplication and division.

Please continue to send emails to [email protected] with any learning that you complete or even if you just want to say hello! I will also answer any questions that you might have.

Enjoy your week!  Miss Williams

Short daily activities

Times tables

Continue to practise 3s, 4s and 8s every day. Remember that it is good to practise them going forwards, backwards, in and out of order and using the inverse. You could also challenge yourself to solve missing number sentences like 3 x ? = 27 or 48 = 8 x ?

If you feel that you are an expert at these, start to learn your 6s or even your 7s and 9s. Think about how the 3- and 6-times tables are related. Can you spot any patterns?

Continue to read the texts that you enjoy and every now again perhaps try something new, you never know what you might like!

I have included a reading comprehension that you can complete if you wish.

Last week’s Maths Challenge Well done to Noah for completing last week’s challenge!

Day 1

English Mathematics World Ocean Day

Learning Objective – To use fronted adverbials.

A great way to add more detail to our writing and make it more interesting is to start sentences with fronted adverbials. They can tell us where something happened, when it happened or how it happened and they always need a comma afterwards.

Examples:

Beneath the crashing waves, the dolphins quickly swam.

Early one morning, I went for a jog.

With a loud roar, the T-Rex chased the small dinosaur.

Try thinking of fronted adverbials to add to the sentences on the worksheet below. Or, if you’re feeling creative, you could write your own sentences or a descriptive paragraph that include different fronted adverbials. Perhaps it could be linked to our new topic!

Today is World Ocean Day!

On the following website there is a whole programme of activities for the whole day starting at 9:00 a.m. For some of the activities you need to preregister but there is a great variety to keep you busy all day if you wish. It includes science lessons, live ocean films, music performances, yoga, breath-work, storytelling and lots more! You are also encouraged to dress in blue.

Let me know if you complete any of the

activities or watch any of the clips and I would love to hear about anything you’ve learnt! I’ve even spotted an activity entitled ‘Exploring the Arctic Ocean with an Encounter EDU’, which sounds like it would link well with our topic.

Day 2

English Mathematics Geography

Learning Objective – To plan a senses poem Close your eyes and imagine you are in the Arctic. Look at some images beforehand to help your imagination get to work. What can you see? What can you hear? What can you smell? What can you taste? What can you feel?

Write down your ideas on the template below. Think about using exciting literary devices in your planning such as adjectives, alliteration, similes and metaphors.

Examples:

Delicate ice, glistening glaciers, whistling wind

Learning Objective – To research the Northern Lights

Have you ever heard of the Northern Lights or an aurora? It is a fascinating natural light display in the Earth’s sky which can be seen in the Arctic. I would like you to find out as much as you can about this natural wonder, you can choose how to present the information that you gather. You could write bullet points, create a powerpoint or use the template below to write a fact file.

Day 3

English Mathematics Wellbeing Wednesday

Learning objective – To write a senses poem Today, I would like you to write your senses poem. Remember to think carefully about the structure of your poem, I would suggest writing a stanza or verse for each sense that you would like to include. If you would prefer you can choose to write your poem about a different location.

Example stanza:

I can hear the delicate ice cracking, the wind whistling

And the glistening glaciers rumbling like thunder.

I can hear the wolves howling, the seals barking

And the tranquil water rippling.

Watch this video clip:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zg6r82p Can you find out the meaning of the following?

- Transparent - Translucent - Opaque - Reflective

What do you notice about reflective

materials? Find a variety of objects around your home and see if you can think of a way to test whether the objects are transparent, translucent, opaque or reflective. Can you record your findings on the template below? Challenge - Can you use reflective materials to direct light from a light source to a target point? Perhaps you could try creating a light maze. What objects might block the light?

Day 5

English Mathematics Physical Education

Learning objective – To design and create a reading area

Today, I would like you to think about how you could create your own special reading area at home. You might decide to design it first or get stuck in to creating it straight away.

Friday Maths Challenge!

Weather permitting, you could go for a walk and complete the nature scavenger hunt in the resources below or create your own.

If you’d prefer or if the weather isn’t as lovely as it has been, you could complete a Joe Wicks workout.

(8)

Try to think about how you would answer these questions to help:

Where is your reading area going to be? It could be a space in your bedroom or you might be able to create a space outside!

How would you like your reading area to feel? How will you create this mood? You could use some lights, blankets and cushions or soft toys. Is your reading area going to have a special theme? You could create some posters to add. Remember to be creative! I would love to see some photographs of the areas you create or even any designs of your dream reading area if you are unable to create one.

Ask somebody to test you on the times tables that you have been practising. Remember to challenge yourself through division and missing number questions, e.g. ? x 8 = 48
