ROCK HILL, S .C . – Carson-Newman was picked to finish one slot lower than its

third place finish from 2018 as the South Atlantic Conference released its preseason

coaches’ poll Tuesday showing the Eagles sitting in fourth .

“Our strength right now has been our chemistry,” Carson-Newman coach Tom

Grif-fin said . “I think the chemistry is good but no lineup has been made yet . Our upper

class leadership has been fantastic . One of the reasons is that they have been with us

for a long time and they buy into the culture .

“We have some depth especially offensively . Defense has really been a strong suit

so far . Pitching wise, we feel we have a wide array of different type pitchers . The

biggest question is who is going to be those starting guys to give us five or six

innings . We feel like we have a staff behind them that can do the job in short relief .

Coach Tom Griffin’s club went 28-22 overall but posted a 16-11 mark in conference

play last season . The team’s run in the SAC Baseball Championships came to halt

against top-seeded Catawba one game shy of advancing back to the conference

championship series .

Three of the team’s all-league honorees from 2018 graduated including two Major

League Baseball draft selections . Brett Langhorne was selected in the 10th round by

the Atlanta Braves and Will Gardner heard his name called in the 21st round by the

Pittsburgh Pirates .

It marked the fourth time in the history of the school that Carson-Newman has

had two players selected in the same draft class . Carson-Newman was one of three

schools in Division II to produce multiple draft selections through 21 rounds of this

year’s draft – all have two . Tampa and Nova Southeastern are the other two .

The only member of the elite class was first-team All-SAC pick and Academic

All-American Dillon Cate, the unit’s Friday starter . The Eagles are one of eight

schools to have a member of the All-American groups each of the last two seasons .

In the field, six starters return from last year’s club but the two top run producers

graduated in Langhorne and Cade Snapp . Seven of the top 10 at-bat leaders return

while 66 percent of the club’s hits are back in the lineup (306/463) .

Feasting on right-handed pitching where the team went 24-9 against righty starters

compared to 4-13 against southpaws, C-N was 27-10 when scoring at least five runs .

Three of the top four pitchers in terms of innings are on the roster and 63 percent of

the pitching staff’s frames throw factor into this year’s rotation . The mound could

help decide the majority of the season as the Eagles were 17-3 when yielding four

runs or fewer compared to 11-19 when conceding at least five .

“Everything that we do,” Griffin said . “From our stretching to our throwing

pro-gram . The fundamentals of the game and doing it the correct way . At this point, you

could just do your bands and get it over with . You can get through to get through it .

What is our intent and focus on each drill? If we can maintain that focus, then it’s

easier to maintain focus in a doubleheader .”

The six-time reigning regular-season titleholders, Catawba, was once again picked

to win the league earning eight of the 11 first-place votes . The Indians were shut out

of the NCAA postseason for the first time since 2013 .

Lincoln Memorial earned the league’s postseason crown with a thrilling comeback

11-inning contest in a winner-take-all affair at Smokies Stadium to earn three

first-place votes and be slotted second . The Railsplitters won their first game in the

NCAA Tournament before dropping two straight to be eliminated .

Wingate was picked third after sneaking into the postseason despite losing six

in-a-row to end the year including both in the league tournament and both in the

regionals .

Newberry, Lenoir-Rhyne and Tusculum were picked fifth through seventh while a

sizeable gap between the bottom of the table, Anderson, Mars Hill, Coker and

first-year member Queens .

CARSON-NEWMAN BASEBALL POSITION PREVIEWS

While the roster as a whole returns six of the top seven batters from the 2018 club,

the infield provides the biggest missing piece in the team’s leader at the plate, Brett

Langhorne . The Tennessee transfer was selected in the 10th round of Major League

Baseball’s First-Year Player Draft by the Atlanta Braves .

In 101 games, the Mechiancsville, Va . Native posted a .325 batting average with 14

home runs, 75 RBIs, 84 runs scored and 37 stolen bases in 45 attempts producing a

pair of All-South Atlantic Conference campaigns .

“It’s hard to replace a guy like Brett Langhorne,” Sharpe said . “For us, individually

getting better and not one guy having to replace him but collectively upping our

game . Brett was a great player for us and a guy we could really lean on when the

game got tight .”

Every day first baseman Colby Morgan is no longer with the program but C-N has

plenty of options to fill those shoes . Mark Treadway (Friendsville, Tenn .) came on

late in the season driving in 10 runs over the final couple weeks of the year . Kilian

Daughtry (Simpsonville, S .C .) was the team’s top pinch-hitting option and saw

time at designated hitter . The program also welcomes back Malik Kyle (Jefferson

City, Tenn .) after the left-handed hitter was groomed at Walters State the past two

seasons .

Freshman Cade Burkey (Knoxville, Tenn .) also projects at first base after finishing

his prep career at Farragut High School .

At second base, Sharpe led the team with 33 starts at the position notching a .289

batting average with four home runs and 28 RBIs . He had 14 multi-hit games and

seven multi-RBI outings hitting in several different slots in the lineup .

“I learned a lot,” Sharpe said . “Coach Griff and coach [Brandon] Roberts really

changed my game coming from junior college – working harder, being more vocal

in the field, learning better with a two-strike approach . Griff completely changed

my game for the better and taught me things that I had no idea what was going on .

Before my approach was get up there and hit the ball . Now, he’s taught me a lot of

things about looking backside and having more pop this year .”

Alan Silva (Sevierville, Tenn .) and Dom Leo (Knoxville, Tenn .) started six games

apiece at the position in 2018 . Wilfredo Acevedo (Bayamon, P .R .) adds to the utility

depth .

The most experienced position player in recent memory graduated as Cade Snapp

finished his career with 115 runs scored, 36 home runs and 158 RBIs and a .298

batting average in 172 career games producing 55 multi-hit efforts and 42 multi-RBI

outings in his career . Most of his time was spent in left field but he also saw time at

first base or at designated hitter .

“There’s no replacing Cade with his power and his pure ability to hit the ball,”

Campbell said . “For me, learning from him was being a leader for those outfielders

making sure that everyone is on the same page . The young guys learned from him

last year so it’s my job now to keep them improving .”

Campbell brings stability to a youthful unit having been around the program since

2015 piling up 98 starts and playing in 43 games . Over the last two years, he has

a batting average above .300 driving in 36 runs despite battling injuries . Primarily

a year ago he was the team’s designated hitter as the Eagles were 21-13 when he

started .

“This summer I worked hard with coach [Tom Griffin] getting my overall strength

back,” Campbell said . “Last year I thought it was going to be my year back in the

outfield but my shoulder never really got there . This year I’m hoping my body stays

healthy .”

Otherwise the outfield is filled with young guns ready to take a jump forward in

their development . Starting in center field, Tyler Thompson (Gallatin, Tenn .) started

44 games with the team producing a record of eight games above .500 with him out

there . He hit .301 with two homers, 16 RBIs and 11 steals recording 13 multi-hit

games .

In right field, Jordan Griffin (Ellerslie, Ga .) found a groove after playing on the

football team hitting four homers and driving in 19 . He produced nine RBIs in a

three-game sweep over eventual upstart Anderson in a March series .

Charlie Brown (Sevierville, Tenn .) saw time around the outfield but settled into left

field . The defensive whiz that produced a Sportscenter Top 10 play as a rookie hit

.309 with 11 RBIs and four steals .

“Their ability is there,” Campbell said . “No one has a better arm than Charlie . No

one is faster than Jordan or Tyler Thompson so now it’s more of the mental side of

the game making sure they are in the right position and they know what to do with

the ball .”

The depth of the position does not stop with a trio of sophomores . Senior Cal Smith

(Keller, Texas) made 16 starts a year ago and stole four bases in five tries . Hal

Bishop projects to earn at-bats after hitting a two-run bomb against Anderson on

March 17 .

Ethan Goforth was one of the top overall catchers in the nation a year ago being an all-confer-ence pick and winning a gold glove behind the plate .

CARSON-NEWMAN BASEBALL

(9)

CARSON-NEWMAN BASEBALL POSITION PREVIEWS

There are two big holes to fill for the Eagles on the rubber starting with Will

Gard-ner . The closer was drafted in the 21st round of Major League Baseball’s draft by

the Pittsburgh Pirates . The second-team All-South Atlantic Conference pick led the

nation after the regular season with 12 saves . The righty appeared in 38 games with

seven wins, 12 saves, five complete games and 122 strikeouts and 44 walks in 118

2/3 innings pitched .

At the start of games, Academic All-American Dillon Cate graduated finishing his

one season at Mossy Creek as a first-team all-conference selection . The

redshirt-se-nior was 27th in the country for strikeouts and ranked second in the league with 97

on the season in 80 1/3 innings pitched . His six wins were tied for fifth while his

4 .30 ERA is 11th .

The leading candidate to take Cate’s role is 2018 SAC All-Tournament team pick

Matt Bradley (Talbott, Tenn .) . After spending time in the field, the Eagles moved the

righty to the weekend rotation where he finished the season with a 2 .14 ERA in 33

2/3 innings pitched, good for the third-lowest clip (min . 25 IP) in program history .

He struck out a career-high 11 in his first complete against Anderson in the SAC

Baseball Championships on April 28, 2018 allowing one run on six hits and a walk .

Carson-Newman has a pair of other hurlers that spent time in the weekend rotation

but could not maintain consistency in Kyle Cagle (Fairview, N .C .) and Dalton Long

(Powell, Tenn .) . Cagle dabbled with a no-hitter in his first outing of the year before

finishing the season with a 3-2 record and a 3 .81 ERA coming out of the bullpen .

Long punched out 10 batters in his debut but failed to go four innings in each of his

last five outings of the year .

Valentine is coming off of his best season of his career as he went 6-1 with a 3 .53

ERA striking out 42 in 27 appearances . He netted the SAC and Region Pitcher of the

Week honors over the last week of February . He enters his senior season 13 games

shy of setting the school’s all-time record for games by a pitcher held by Ryan

Fillers (88) from 2010-13 .

“I asked what am I lacking here,” Valentine said . “The big thing for me was the

mental side . I threw pitches that I needed to throw but I wasn’t as detailed in my

mind as I wanted to be . I started visually success and different situations I would be

in . That gave me experience going into games I was going to be in .”

The conference’s Elite 20 winner, given to the athlete at a championship site with

the highest GPA, Ryan Victory (Brentwood, Tenn .) has made 50 career appearances

as a starter, opener and reliever . Adding to the experienced group, Austin Conner

(Sevierville, Tenn .) has pitched in 41 outings .

There are nearly a dozen additional options for pitching coach Mark Allen Bounds

to use including returners Luke Friedman (Gilbert, Ariz .) and Cameron Bloebaum

(Kinsey, Ala .) . Newcomers Nick Adkins (Knoxville, Tenn .), Hunter Long (Powell,

Tenn .) and Dawson Sims (Stafford, Va .) expect to accumulate innings .

“You want to lead them by example obviously,” Valentine said . “I also want them to

use what I have done with the visualization . If you haven’t been in those situations

before, you want to visualize and get yourself as close to that experience as possible .

It’s something we have all been doing as a staff . I think this staff has the most

chem-istry I’ve ever seen before . We are always in the locker room and dugout helping

each other out .”

Behind the dish, Ethan Goforth (Blacksburg, Va .) caught nearly every inning for the

Eagles as a sophomore producing a second-team All-SAC season and a Gold Glove

campaign . He finished fourth in the SAC in stolen bases (17) and sixth in doubles

(19) and led the league by throwing out 16 would-be base stealers .

“I think he’s one of the better catchers as far as offense, defense, his personality,

his leadership, everything,” Valentine said . “Having him behind the plate is such a

presence . When we are up there on the mound, it’s not just me versus the batter . It’s

me and the catcher versus that one batter, two versus one .”

Goforth should get some help at the position from rookie Chris Caldwell

(Sey-mour, Tenn .) where he earned a trip to the state championship under former C-N

All-American Kyle Koeneman .

Greg Valentine is closing in on the school’s all-time record for appearances in a career need-ing to get to 89 to pass Ryan Fillers .

* Denotes NCAA Tournament Appearance Tom Griffin will enter his 14th season as head baseball coach at

Carson-New-man in 2019 .

In his 13 years at Mossy Creek, the New Jersey-native has looked right at home as the head coach of the Eagles . He has compiled an overall record of 376-295 and a conference record of 170-150 at Carson Newman . He is 561-473-2 in 21 seasons as a college baseball coach .

Griffin’s hard work and perseverance landed him in Jefferson City for a third stint, this time as the lead Eagle .

“This is a dream come true,” Griffin said . “Carson-Newman has changed my life . To work here as the head coach is exactly how I want to lead young men, both on and off the field . I want our student-athletes to develop not just on the baseball field, but I want them to grow spiritually, to become good leaders in the community and in all aspects of their lives .”

In his first season at Mossy Creek, Griffin led the Eagles to a 35-20 record and a 15-6 mark in the South Atlantic Conference . The success followed in 2007, as he coached the Eagles to a 36-20 mark, a South Atlantic Conference Tour-nament title, and a berth in the NCAA Division II South regional tourTour-nament . The Eagles grabbed their first NCAA Tournament appearance in five years with an incredible run to the SAC Tournament title . C-N won three games on “Championship Sunday,” including 12-inning thriller over rival-Tusculum in the championship game to earn the SAC’s automatic NCAA bid . In 2008, the Eagles finished with a 43-18 mark, setting the school record for wins in a season . C-N earned its second consecutive trip to the NCAA Division II South Regional Tournament, beating Stillman and Tusculum . The Eagles finished the season ranked #27 in the Ping Baseball Poll and #29 by Collegiate Baseball .

During the 2009 season, Coach Griffin won his 300th game in the second game of the season, beating Augusta State . The Eagles finished the regular season at 24-21 . The Eagles were ranked as high as #12 in the Collegiate Baseball poll during the season .

Carson-Newman finished with a winning record in 2015 (25-21) for the first time since 2012 (28-26) while finishing at least four games over .500 for the first time since 2010 (31-18) . Four Eagles were honored by the SAC on postseason rosters . The four honorees are the most by the Eagles since 2010 . Vince Apicella earned All-Region honors from the NCBWA and ABCA after finishing fourth in Division II with 111 strikeouts .

The 2016 regular season was a year filled with milestones for Griffin . The skipper picked up his 300th win at Carson-Newman at Brevard on March 5 as the Eagles swept the Tornados to become the sixth SAC coach to earn 300 wins at one school . As the Eagles clinched the No . 2 seed in the SAC Baseball Championships at Tusculum on April 24, Griffin earned his 500th career coaching victory . VERSUS OPPONENTS

In 2017, the mentor led the Eagles back to the SAC Baseball Championships title round as C-N won four elimination games before falling to second-seed-ed Lincoln Memorial in the title round . His group placsecond-seed-ed three members on all-conference teams . With 22 home victories, the club matched the 2002 team for home wins in single-season in program history .

The success of the team rolled along in 2018 as the team matched the program record for league victories in a season with the 1999 group that won 16 . The pitching staff punched out 425 batters on the season to pass the 1999 unit for first with 417, a mark that is 10th in SAC history . Four different players earned postseason all-conference honors while a fifth was named to the all-tournament team . Ryan Victory won the SAC’s Elite 20 award and Dillon Cate was named a second-team Academic All-American .

The development of third baseman Brett Langhorne and pitcher Will Gardner saw the duo be selected in 2018 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft . Langhorne was selected in the 10th round, 292nd overall by the Atlanta Braves and Gardner was selected in the 21st round, 624th overall by the Pitts-burgh Pirates . Carson-Newman is one of three schools in Division II to pro-duce multiple draft selections through 21 picks of this year’s draft – all have two . Tampa and Nova Southeastern are the other two . It marked the fourth time in the history of the school that Carson-Newman has had two players selected in the same draft class as it had been 11 years since the Eagles had a player drafted . Langhorne holds the distinction of the highest drafted position player in the history of the school besting first baseman Samuel Roberts who was taken in the 14th round in the 1975 draft .

Griffin had been an assistant with the Eagles on two different occasions, serving from 1998-2001, and then again from 2003-2005 .

In his first stint, Griffin worked with the catchers, infielders and outfielders and was an assistant coach on the 1999 team that won the SAC title and advanced to the NCAA Division II World Series .

At Carson-Newman, he has coached and recruited 58 All-SAC players, five SAC Player of the Years, 25 All-South Region selections, and six NCAA Division II All-Americans . He has also coached 20 players who have gone on to play professional baseball . One of his former players, Steve Cishek, just finished his sixth in Major League Baseball with the St . Louis Cardinals after playing his first five and a half years with the Florida Marlins . Steve is only the second former Eagle to play in the big leagues .

Griffin has also authored an instructional catching baseball video, “Catch It, Block It, Throw It .” A regular instructional speaker at various coaching clinics and camps, he has been the featured speaker at the American Baseball Coaches Association convention in Orlando, Florida in 2007 and Anaheim, California in 2012 .

In 2002, Griffin took over the reins of the Morristown East High School baseball program, completely turning around the Hurricanes program . He led East to a 24-16 overall record and the district championship . For his efforts, Griffin was named the Northeast Tennessee Coach of the Year . He returned to the Eagles program in 2003 where he helped coach the Eagles to another SAC championship and a 31-21 record, serving as the recruiting coordinator, hitting coach, and coaching the infielders and catchers .

Prior to his arrival at Carson-Newman, Griffin was the head coach at Tuscu-lum College for eight years where he compiled a 184-178-2 record . Under his guidance, the Pioneers earned four straight trips to the NAIA Dis-trict 24 Tournament, capturing the 1995 TVAC Tournament title and making their first-ever regional tournament appearance at the 1995 NAIA Mid-South Regional .

Griffin also led Tusculum to a school-record 34 wins in that same season . He coached 21 All-Conference selections, two Player of the Year selections, and two All-Americans .

A native of Roxbury, New Jersey, Griffin was an assistant coach at his alma mater, Tennessee Wesleyan, in 1989 . Griffin was a four-year starting catcher for the TWC Bulldogs and was a three-time All-TVAC selection and a member of the All-District team in 1988 . He was named Most Valuable Player after his Junior and Senior years and Best Defensive Player following his Freshman and Sophomore years . In October 2012, Griffin was named to the Tennessee Wesleyan Sports Hall of Fame . He earned a B .S . degree in Health and Physical Education from TWC in 1988 and completed his M .S . degree in Education from Tusculum in 2005 . Griffin, 51, and his wife Christy are the parents of three girls, twins Carlin and Cori and Delaney .

Griffin is the sixth head coach in the modern era of Eagles baseball (1924-present) . The program is rich in history . The Eagles have won five SAC regular-season titles (1991, 1993, 1999, 2002 and 2003) and four SAC Tour-nament titles (1992, 1993, 1997 and 2007) . C-N has advanced to the NCAA Tournament four times (1999, 2002, 2007 and 2008) and has played in three World Series (1965, 1993 and 1999) .
