- TOGETHER IN FAITH -

FROM FR. MARK’S DESK

Dear Parish Family

I hope that you all took the  me to watch the video of Deacon Corby’s  homily.  There was a malfunc on in the audio again.  Deacon Corby’s  homily was so good that I asked him to video it so we could upload it.

This week we celebrate the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ.  This  feast day points back to Holy Thursday at the Ins tu on of the Eucharist.

So today we gather to celebrate the Eucharist and what the Eucharist  means on our lives and in our faith journey.

The Eucharist is the sacrament that nourishes and sustains us in our jour‐

ney from God to God.

The Eucharist is the last sacrament that is to be received.  Via cum “food  for the journey” received when someone is gravely ill.

The Eucharist is what each of you is longing to return too – and we will be  doing so soon enough.

If absence makes the heart grow fonder, then there should be a renewed  fondness for the Eucharist in the hearts of many.

Lastly, I want to thank everyone for the well wishes and notes for my Or‐

dina on Anniversary.  I appreciate your though ulness.

Have a good week – stay in….stay safe,

Bible Study

Today is the feast of Corpus Christie, the Body and Blood of Christ. The belief that the Bread and Wine of the Eucharist is transformed into the Body and Blood of Christ goes back to the early days of the Church and was not sub- stantially challenged until the Protestant Reformation in the 1500's. This dogma was defined and held to be true in the Council of Trent in 1562 in re- sponse to the challenge. The Catholic Church holds that at the moment of consecration, the substance of the bread and wine is changed into the sub- stance of the Body and Blood of Christ. The appearance (species) of bread and wine remain – Transubstantiation (CCC1376). The two perspectives that most protestant denominations hold are: 1) the bread and wine coexist with the spiritual Body and Blood of Christ – Consubstantiation and 2. the bread and wine are merely symbolic of the Body and Blood of Christ. What is im- portant is to understand the beliefs/teaching of the Magestarium of the Catholic Church in this matter (CCC1333-1381). This understanding of this important teaching has important ramifications regards our relationship to Christ and understanding God's love for us. God bless each of you.

Vocation Corner

We are excited to have upon us a summer of ordinations: one bishop and three new priests serving in the Diocese of Belleville! The ordination dates will be July 11 (priesthood) and July 22 (episcopal ordination and instillation).

In the Vocation Corner for the month of June we will profile each of the four men being ordained this summer. We are including their mailing addresses should you want to write them letters expressing your support and prayers.

Please pray for: Deacon Nicholas Fleming He is 28 and is from St. Clare Parish in O'Fallon.

He will be ordained a priest on July 11, 2020.

Attended Kenrick Seminary in St. Louis, MO.

To write a letter of support, please send to:

Immaculate Conception Parish, 411 Palmer Rd, Columbia, IL 62236

Respect Life Corner

“My flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.” (John 6:55) During the COVID pandemic we have had to go without our spiritual food for an extended period of time. Jesus tell us in today’s Gospel that His body and blood are just as vital to us as food and drink. How we have waited for the nourishment of the life-giving Eucharist and the graces it produces upon our souls. How good it is that as our Churches reopen we can receive the body and blood of Christ with gratitude as we pray for healing in our souls and in our country.

Learn, Act, Connect and Pray—“Jesus, thank you for the life you give us in your Body and Blood.” May we always be mindful of His healing presence.

Prayer for Spiritual Communion

My Jesus,

I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament, I love You above all things and I desire to receive You in my body, my soul, and my whole being. Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacra- mentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if you were already there, and unite myself wholly to You.

Never permit me to be separated from You.

Amen.

Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

Bread and Wine; Flesh and Blood. For a while – too long, it seems – most of us could not share in Holy Communion. Perhaps it is still so. We long to eat and drink because Jesus pledges that he will remain in those who do. But we believe that same Christ is present to us in other ways. When Scripture is read aloud, he speaks in our midst today. When two or three gather in his name, he is there, too. He is not distant from us.

 Let me make time each day to read and ponder one of the Sunday read- ings.

 Even if I cannot go to church, how will I still continue to pray?



How will my longing for Eucharist and Communion urge me to help feed those needing daily bread?

Stewardship Gardens

by Gene Racho

Team busy weeding and harvesting last of season's asparagus, and lettuce, kale and Swiss Chard. Lettuce is being delivered to the Knights of Columbus and donated to the Freeburg Food Bank. Trust our Lord will deliver the right amount of rain from the tropical storm Cristobol. The ground is now dry and in need of moisture. Soon radishes and turnip greens will be ready to har- vest. Repeating our request for names of people in need of fresh veggies.

They can remain anonymous and the person making the call can deliver the veggies. As this segment of garden activities increase, folks to pack and make deliveries are needed. Give the office your contact information or send an e-mail to: gr617@aol.com with: Stewardship Garden volunteer in the sub- ject line. Thanks. May our Lord bless you for helping and working in His

“vineyard.”

Just as we are about to come out of our homes and try to resume our lives as they were before the shut-down we are hit with demonstrations and vio- lence. Talk about a downward spiral into chaos. For believers in Christ, it doesn't have to be that way. Remember our Lord has given us the opportuni- ty to reflect on and redirect our lives toward Him and His plan for us. If we did this we need not fear what is going on around us. Read Psalm 91 again. We can go forth to be the desperately needed light of Christ to others. If we, who are stewards of our Father and God, do not, who will? You have been shown that you need not fear but can go forth boldly. Be Christ's light by encourag- ing one another, find points to agree on and not create polarization, live in peace and the God of love and peace will be with you (2 Cor13:11) Last week Deacon Corby gave an excellent homily that helps us to accomplish this and better understand the minds of those who are both demonstrating and par- ticipating in the violence as well. We are not speaking of those who are in- tentionally creating chaos but those who are drawn into their web of deceit.

Watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8EHUXuvlRkA Be the best steward, shepherd you can be. As Father Mark tells us: Put God first; be Catholic. Reflect the light of our Lord to all those you encounter. We pray that God bless you and prosper all you do in His name.

- CONGRATULATIONS DEACON CORBY -

Catholic Relief Services - Global Fellow

Earlier this year it was suggested that I apply to the CRS Global Fellows program. I filled out the application which included a video of one of my homilies. I was recently informed that my application was accepted by the committee and the Bishop Advisor. In October, I will be traveling (if travel is allowed) to the CRS headquarters in Baltimore for orientation, training and attending the CRS Global Fellows annual gathering.

CRS Global Fellows are trained and vetted to represent CRS in dioceses across the United States. They deliver engaging homilies during week- end liturgies and present at community events. Their witness describes the good work that the Catholic Church is doing alongside the world’s most vulnerable people. They also offer concrete examples of how your parish or community can help CRS respond to the Gospel call to serve our brothers and sisters.

As the official international Catholic relief and development agency of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Catholic Relief Ser- vices draws upon a rich tradition of Scripture and Catholic social teaching, which serve as the foundation for CRS' Guiding Principles. Acting as a guide to what a just world might look like, these Principles are shared across religious and cultural boundaries and articulate values that are common among people who seek to promote and work towards true justice and lasting peace.

Mission Statement: Catholic Relief Services carries out the commitment of the Bishops of the United States to assist the poor and vulnerable

overseas. We are motivated by the Gospel of Jesus Christ to cherish, preserve and uphold the sacredness and dignity of all human life, foster charity and justice, and embody Catholic social and moral teaching as we act to:

PROMOTE HUMAN DEVELOPMENT by responding to major emergencies, fighting disease and poverty, and nurturing peaceful and just societies;

and,

SERVE CATHOLICS IN THE UNITED STATES as they live their faith in solidarity with their brothers and sisters around the world.

As part of the universal mission of the Catholic Church, we work with local, national and international Catholic institutions and structures, as well as other organizations, to assist people on the basis of need, not creed, race or nationality. We put our faith into action to help the world’s poorest create lasting change.

Faith: Faith is our foundation. We have faith in the people we serve and our shared ability to build a more just and peaceful world.

Action: The desire to serve is not enough. We must act collaboratively to bring about real improvements in peoples’ quality of life and genuine engagement in building peace and justice.

Results: Demonstrated through measureable outcomes, our actions must be effective in alleviating human suffering, removing root causes and empowering people to achieve their full potential.

Who are Global Fellow Ambassadors:

 Active or retired priest or deacon with a passion for social justice, an interest in joining a community of like-minded clergy, and has an interest in CRS

 Be willing and able to commit to three speaking engagements per year throughout the U.S. Be willing and able to participate in at least 1 overseas immersion trip

 Be willing and able to participate in a CRS orientation and other trainings

 Assist in recruitment of parish speaking engagements

 Be willing to assist in recruitment of Global Fellow Associates and Ambassadors

 Be willing to serve as a mentor to new Global Fellows (Ambassadors and Associates), as well as seminarians (if necessary) Please Pray for Me,

Deacon Corby
