Daneka Myles, Hair & Beauty

I’m really enjoying my course at the moment; it has helped develop so many of my skills. I like the fact that my course doesn’t just focus on one aspect of Hair & Beauty but instead it lets me develop my skills in a range of areas; like hairdressing, make-up and massage therapies. The teachers are all really supportive and organise all of the classes really well. After finishing my course I am going to get a job in a salon before going on to study at university.”

Christina Christoforou, Children & Young People’s Workforce

I have achieved real experience on my course at Croydon College. It has also made me more employable. My assessor and I have built up a good working relationship and she supported me above and beyond what an assessor has to do by advising, supporting and guiding me through my course. My tutor helped me to understand basic practice and the written side of childcare and she also encouraged me to voice my opinion in the classroom.”

Aiden Hoadley, Carpentry

As soon as I found out about what an Apprenticeship can offer, I wanted to study for one as soon as possible. It suits me really well because, after only two years of learning, I will be ready and equipped for the world of work. It has helped me develop my hand skills a lot and has also given me the chance to use tools that I have never worked with previously. One of the best things about my time at Croydon College is the knowledge you get from guest speakers. One talk, which I remember in particular was about renewable energy systems; it was very interesting to listen to them share their industry knowledge.” Tolga Mustafa,

Film & TV

I am really enjoying studying my course here at Croydon College. The teachers are really helpful and supportive and help you to make sure that your work is handed in before deadlines. They give you a lot of feedback which has helped me improve my work. I’ve learned a great deal about filming and camera techniques which will definitely help me to get a job. If you are more of a practical person, and enjoy making TV adverts or other animations, then studying this course at Croydon College is perfect.”

Billy Donovan, Heating & Ventilation

My whole time on the Apprenticeship course was very beneficial. Learning on the job suited my lifestyle very well and my tutors at the College were always very supportive. The learning systems at College were very good because they taught us using a failsafe procedure and covered every eventuality concerned with how to fix our own plumbing problems. Before I started my Apprenticeship I had next to no experience with using some new tools, but now I feel confident and I have developed my knowledge a lot.” Jeanne-Marie Fraser,

Fashion

Croydon School of Art has really helped me come out of my shy personality and I think that that is reflected in all of my fashion designs. Coming to Croydon has helped me to design clothes to the best of my ability and I have really enjoyed showing these to everyone during the End of Year Shows. Before I came here, I wouldn’t have even dreamed of setting up my own fashion label, which I now run and manage independently. I’ve loved studying here and I’d recommend the course to anyone.”

Celebrate success

at Croydon College

Croydon College

celebrates another

year of success

In November 2013, Croydon College celebrated yet another year of success with the Further Education Awards Ceremony. The event recognised the achievements of Further Education students who studied a range of courses during the academic year 2012/13. The Further Education Awards, now celebrating its 11th year, saw over 150 guests and supporters of the College attend to witness students who have shown great academic strength being celebrated. Awards were presented by The Worshipful Mayor of Croydon, Councillor Yvette Hopley, the College’s Principal and Chief Executive; Frances Wadsworth and the Chair of Governors, Gordon Smith.

College students break

volunteering record

Croydon College students are unmatched when it comes to volunteering - and to prove it they have chalked up more than 24,000 hours helping others in the last year. At a special UNICEF Pledge Award Ceremony held at the College, it was revealed the students had accomplished an extra 6,000 hours of volunteering compared to 2013’s figure of 18,000 hours. To clock up the 24,000 hours, the students involved themselves in a multitude of events and organisations including a ‘fill the trolley’ competition which saw 2,200 food items donated by students to help homeless families over Christmas.

University Centre

Croydon students

celebrate bright futures

Over 250 students gathered at the iconic Fairfield Halls in Croydon to celebrate their Graduation on Friday 24 January 2014. With over 1,000 guests in attendance including family and friends of the graduates it was a celebration for all. University Centre Croydon is delighted to welcome these new graduates to its well established list of alumni, which includes Noel Fielding, Malcolm McLaren and designer John Rocha, who relaunched Croydon School of Art last year.

Double celebration

Minister of State for Skills and Enterprise, Matthew Hancock was among 60 guests who visited the College to celebrate its Ofsted Grade and Queen’s Award. The visit marked the College’s recent award, the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service; the only College ever to have achieved this, and also the rapid quality improvement which was officially recognised by education watchdog Ofsted’s Good grading with Outstanding features.

A-Levels explained

A-Levels are a two-year Level 3 programme that

offer the opportunity to study a range of subjects

and will challenge you to take the next step up in

your journey as a student towards university or

employment. GCSE grades are a good indicator of

future success when choosing which subjects and

what levels of study are best suited to you.

It is important to consider subjects:

• that you are good at • that you enjoy

• that suit your learning profile - for instance, some subjects

are assessed purely by examinations - others by a mixture of coursework and examinations

• that you need for your specific career aim

To build a programme that is right for you, one of our team of specialist interviewers and enrollers will explore a range of opportunities and possibilities with you. Consideration will also be given to applicants who do not meet the standard entry requirements. In order to study a programme of GCE A-Levels, students need to have achieved:

• at least 5 A*-C grades at GCSE in one sitting

• an average GCSE score of at least 5, or 5.3 for Science subjects • GCSE English Language A*-C

• the specific subject criteria as outlined on our website

For a programme involving Science subjects (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Psychology, Mathematics/Further Mathematics), you will need:

• an average GCSE score of at least 5.3 • a minimum grade B in Mathematics

• a minimum grade B in Science (Core) or A*-C in Additional

Science or A*-C in separate Science subjects.

How to work out your GCSE score

It is straightforward to work out your average GCSE score. Each GCSE grade is given a number of points as outlined here:

A* 8 Points A 7 Points B 6 Points C 5 Points D 4 Points E 3 Points F 2 Points G 1 Points U 0 Points

Subject Grade Points

01. English Language B 6 02. Mathematics C 5 03. Art & Design A 7

04. Drama C 5 05. English Literature B 6 06. Geography D 4 07. Science (core) C 5 08. Sociology B 6 Total – 44

This gives a total of 44 points divided by the number of subjects (8), which equals an average GCSE score of 5.5.

First write down all of the GCSE subjects you have taken, starting with English Language and Mathematics, and the results that you have achieved or hope to achieve (BTEC qualifications are not included in the calculation of your average GCSE score). Then simply add the points together and divide by the number of subjects you have taken - for example:
