This is a list of activities that will be offered this fall through the Dare

County Parks and Recreation Department and other youth

organizations. Registration forms are available at the Parks and

Recreation office or register online at:

https://parksandrec.tylertech.com/NC.DareCounty/Home

Early registration is highly recommended.

We accept cash, check, money order and credit or debit cards!

Some important things to remember when registering:

 Some co-sponsored programs may require payment and form to be mailed directly to them. We appreciate your time and understanding regarding the different payments.

 A program is open until full. Once a program is full, children will be placed on a waiting list. If space becomes available, the participant will be notified.

 Participants must meet the age requirement and play at age. Age cutoff is

September 1, 2016.

 Participants will not be allowed to play “up” or “down”.

 Participants must be a Dare County resident or go to school in Dare County.

 Children participating in the preschool programs must be potty trained. NO DIAPERS OR PULL-UPS ALLOWED!

 Please also note that if you have not participated in a Dare County Parks and Recreation program before, you MUST attend a Parent Orientation before being allowed to register your child for any of the following programs.

YOUTH SOCCER UPDATED!! Ages: 5-15

Cost: $35

Coaches are all volunteers and must submit to a background check before being allowed to coach. Coaches also participate in a coaching certification and clinic. Children will progress at their own pace and taught skills to help them progress. Children must provide their own shoes and shin guards. Games tentatively scheduled to begin Saturday, September 24. Mandatory skills days for age 7-12 are as follows:

Wednesday, September 7

* 7-9 Girls 5:15 pm * 7-9 Boys 6:00 pm Thursday, September 8

*10-12 Girls 5:15 pm * 10-12 Boys 6:00 pm

All skills days will take place at the Nags Head Soccer Complex located at Satterfield Landing. In case of inclement weather a modified format inside the gym at the Youth Center will be done. Participants will be notified if we must move to a modified format/times inside.

START SMART FOOTBALL

Ages: 3-5 with a parent Cost: $40 per child

Where: Family Recreation Park in Kill Devil Hills When: Tuesdays & Thursdays

Sept. 6-22

Times: 5:30-6:15 pm Limited to 20 participants.

Instructors: John Morris & Joan Hunter

This program teaches 3-5 year old children motor skill tasks that gradually build confidence, while children have FUN at the same time. Start Smart Football teaches children the basic motor skills necessary to play organized flag football while they work one-on-one and spend quality time with their parents. The program focuses on teaching children and their parents skills on throwing, catching, kicking/punting, running/agility without the threat of competition or the fear of getting hurt.

PEE-WEE FOOTBALL

Ages: 5-6

Cost: $35 per child

This is an instructional league that teaches the very basic fundamentals and skills of the sport. No equipment will be issued however all participants will receive a T-shirt. This program is the next step up from our Start Smart Football program. Children will be placed on teams, and they will play 1 game with each team and this is non-contact flag football. Practices will begin September 27 and will be held every Tuesday & Thursday from 5:30-6:30. All coaches are volunteers and must have a background check before allowed to

coach.

YOUTH FOOTBALL

Ages: 7-12

Cost: $50 per child

*** Space is limited. Roster size will be dependent upon number of registrations. Please register early so we can gauge equipment/team needs. ***

Children will participate in their respective age divisions and age divisions will be determined after registration has concluded. All coaches are volunteers and must submit to a background check before being allowed to coach. All leagues will be tackle football and games are played at Family Recreation Park in Kill Devil Hills. All equipment except shoes is provided by Parks and Recreation. Conditioning practices will be for all participants September 6-9 from 5:30-7 pm daily. Equipment fittings will be held Saturday, September 10 from 9-11 am at the Youth Center.

YOUTH CHEERLEADING

Ages: 7-12

Cost: $40 per child

Day and time has not yet been determined. Children will cheer in their respective age groups for an assigned football team. Cheerleading outfit will be provided by Parks and Recreation. Practices will tentatively begin after Labor Day.

DRAMA COURSE / PLAY PRODUCTION

Ages: 9 & up Cost: $50 per child

When: Tuesdays & Thursdays from 4:30-6 pm

Tentatively - Sept. 13 to February 11,2017

Where: Youth Center

Instructor: Gail F. Hutchison earned her Bachelor of Arts in Theatre, minor in Psychiatry in 1983 at St. Andrews Presbyterian College. She has performed 8 years in The Lost Colony and has directed several plays through their Professional Theatre Workshops. She was the Tour Stage Manager for Opera Carolina and Production Stage Manager for Charlotte Shakespeare Company. Gail taught 4th and 5th grade drama for a year in the Wake County School System. She was the first director of the Theatre of Dare and this past season, directed 'You Can't Take It With You'. Additionally she has worked in film, tv commercials and with PBS out of Chapel Hill. Gail now serves as the Victim's Advocate with the Dare County Sheriff's Office and is looking for-ward to working with Dare County youth in her chosen field of study.

Participants will learn audition techniques, the rules of theatre and characterization, while rehearsing a full play or musical. All participants will received a letter with details regarding the play as well as a calendar for the season the first week of class.

Details: Class space is limited so early registration is highly recommended. This is a tentative schedule and is dependent upon registration.

Important Information

Begins the week of September 6 with no Monday, September 5 classes due to Labor Day. All classes will have an end of season show. CHILDREN MUST BE POTTY TRAINED. NO DIAPERS!!

If you have questions on what level your child should be, call Kelli at 475-5924 and set an appointment for them to be tested on August 4 or 6 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Levels 1-3 are one day a week. Please feel free to sign up for more than one class. Level 4 & 5 is re-quired two days a week at a higher price. Tumble team will be required to purchase leotard or uniform. The in-structor will place everyone in the appropriate classes.

Floor: cartwheel, handstand (1 sec.) back bend with spotting, 120 degree splits

Bars: back hip circle, glide (pike or straddle) swing

Beam: Tuck jump, forward roll, skipping

Vault: straddle on, tuck over, straddle over, jump off & stick

Level 3 (in addition to Level 1&2 skills)

Floor: hand stand (5 sec) & roll, round off, tick tocks cart wheels, back walkover with spot, front limbers, backward roll to push up

Bars: single leg shoot through & circle, squat on, glide single leg shoot through, pull over from hang

Beam: squat turns, V sit & swing up to squat stand, scale, cartwheel with spot, leap with 90 degrees split, side handstand dismount

Level 4 (in addition to Level 1-3 skills)

Floor: straddle jump 120 degrees split, front hand springs to two feet, back extension roll, back walkover, round off back handspring

Bars: straddle or pike glide kip, cast to horizontal, squat on, long hang kip, hip circles

Beam: cartwheel, split leap to 120 degrees, hand stand, split jump to 120 degrees, cartwheel to side handstand 1/4 turn dismount.

Vault: front handspring

Level 5 (in addition to Level 1-4 skills)

Floor: front handspring step out to front handspring to two feet, front tuck, full turns, leap 150 degree split, round off back handspring, back tuck Bars: kips, cast to above horizontal, back sole

Are you new to Dare County Parks and Recreation? If you answered yes, you must attend a parent orientation before your child will be allowed to participate in one of our competitive sports. The parent orientation is simple and takes only 20 minutes to complete. To sign up for a parent orientation, please call our office at 475-5850. Parent orientations will be offered at the following dates & times at the Youth Center.

Do you have football cleats, soccer cleats or shin

guards that your child has out grown? Bring it to

the Parks and Recreation office in Kill Devil Hills

between now and September 23 and swap it out

for a larger size if we have it. The office is open

8:30-5 Monday through Friday.

Don’t have anything to swap? Don’t worry you

can still come check out what we have in

inventory or give us a call and we will be more

than happy to check and hold something for you.

Do you have a child going into the 6th grade or in

middle school or high school? Did you know that the Parks and Recreation Department offers a FREE after school program to all middle and high school student? Conveniently located beside the First Flight Schools, students can walk over after school. We have open gym, organized play of volleyball, dodge ball, TV room with snack and drink machines as well as a game room with a pool table, ping pong table and air hockey table. Students MUST have a membership form on file with current address and contact information and sign the Code of Conduct before being allowed to attend. * Advanced Intermediate: This player can rally back and forth 

at least 10  mes with no mistake, serve at least 6 out of 10 

balls into the correct box and can explain where to stand and 

call score correctly. They have played on a Jr Team Tennis 

Team. 

 

* Advanced: This player can rally back and forth at least 10 

mes with no mistake, serve at least 6 out of 10 balls into the 

correct box and can explain where to stand and call score cor‐

rectly. They have played on a Jr Team Tennis Team for at 

least 2 seasons. Players have competed in USTA Tournaments 

and are working for a state ranking and or interested in fu‐

Dare County Special Olympics Basketball

will begin mid-September. They will be

practicing at the Youth Center in Kill Devil

Hills in preparation for the Special Olympics

North Carolina Fall tournament in

November. Volunteer coaches are needed

for next year's 2017 spring track and field

Parks and Recreation will be changing the gate

code to the Kitty Hawk Dog Park and only those

with updated rabies certificates on file will receive
