New proof of expertise required!

Compact courses 2010

According to the Chemicals Climate Protection

Ordinance (§ 5, paragraph 3) all persons responsible

for the maintenance or repair of vehicle air

condi-tioners must acquire the new proof of expertise in

compliance with VDA/VDIK/ZDK. The time limit set

by legislation expires on 04.07.2010, the latest date

to present the new authorisation.

Dometic WAECO International is authorised to

orga-nise qualification seminars and issue certificates as

proof of expertise. Corresponding one-day compact

courses are arranged at different locations in the

whole of Germany. Applicants must be qualified in

a trade related to motor vehicle technology to

be accepted. The number of participants in each

seminar is limited so that timely and binding

registration is advisable. For information on current

Seminar topics:

The one-day seminars convey the expert knowledge

required by law in a hands-on manner and confirm its

command by a certificate of participation. The

Alternative refrigerants:

What happens when R134a is banned?

In years to come, too:

R 134a A/C service units will remain indispensable

for everyday workshop needs!

The introduction of alternative refrigerants in vehicle

A/C systems has been a topic of discussion for some

time now. Possibilities include the introduction of

processes based on extremely high operating

pressures (e.g. a CO2 system), but also alternatives

such as the HFO-1234yf refrigerant.

Vehicle manufacturers will be using alternative

refri-gerants by 2011 at the latest. From then on

fluoro-carbons such as R134 may no longer be used in newly

built vehicles, following Commission Regulation (EC)

No. 706/2007.

For the everyday workshop routine this means that

starting with the introduction of a new refrigerant

– regardless whether CO

₂

or HFO-1234yf –

work-shops (especially the brand-bound ones) will

initially have to work with two different service

systems.

Likewise, the above mentioned regulation commits

the vehicle industry to stop using R134a as a

refrige-rant for vehicle A/C systems (in new vehicles) from

1st January 2017.

What does this regulation imply?

The fact that

even in year 2016 vehicle A/C systems

containing R134a refrigerant are likely to be

launched in the market

means that workshops must

be prepared to adapt their technical equipment and

handle two different refrigerants.

Taking an average

service time of 20 years into account, vehicles using

R134a refrigerant will be taken to workshops for

maintenance and service until the end of 2036!

This is why R134a A/C service stations will remain

vitally important for workshops in future, too – for

twenty years and more!

No mistakes possible: fully automatic unit – often copied, never matched!

Units with manual check valves involve the risk of erroneously charging the air conditioner from the low pressure side. Automatic units are safer! Genuine automatic systems can be identified by the fact that they have no check valves.

Patented feeding system for fresh oil and UV additive

Automotive manufacturers warn against using plastic containers because they let moisture into the oil. In ASC A/C service units fresh oil is stored moisture-free in laminate bags contained in protective metal cylinders. No blockage of valves, no solvent penetration! Automotive manufacturers’ specifications on the use of UV additives and PAG oils are met.

Integrated charging amount database

The database contains many vehicle-specific data. The type of oil and the precise amount of oil and refrigerant to be used for specific vehicles are shown on the display. Updates are made available on a regular basis (WAECO flash memory card). New now is the option to create a personalised charging amount database for up to 100 vehicles.

NEW: Also suitable for modern-day hybrid vehicles

ASC-series A/C service units are suitable for service work on modern-day hybrid vehicles of German make, because standard PAG oils are used here. Hybrid vehicles (or air conditioners) from Japanese manufacturers use ester oils. ASC units may be used here, too (check manufacturer’s specifications).

What are the most significant requirements, and

which are relevant for daily workshop operation?

Requirements for SAE J 2788 approval:

›

The unit must be able to recover 95% of the

refrigerant contained in the automotive air con-

ditioner within 30 minutes, at ambient tempera-

tures between 20 and 24°C. In other words, no

more than 5% of the refrigerant may be left in

the air conditioner.

›

Refrigerant must be charged with an accuracy

of +/- 15 g.

›

Measurements must be made and displayed

with an accuracy of +/- 30 g.

To comply with these requirements the WAECO

AirCon Service team has modified the hardware

and software of ASC-series units. Among other

things, they have developed a new weighing

plat-form.

conditioning service on large vehicles such as

where downtimes are extremely costly

ASC 2000RPA –

Fully automatic refrigerant analysis

Refrigerants that are contaminated or mixed with

air inevitably cause damage. In order to be on the

safe side it is advisable to choose the WAECO

ASC 2000RPA service unit.

RPA stands for Refrigerant Purity Analyser – a system

which controls whether the vehicle A/C system and

A/C service unit really contain pure R134a and nothing

else.

The most frequent reasons for refrigerants

contami-nation are

› Refrigerants imported from the Far East

› Air in the vehicle A/C system

A vehicle A/C system can only operate successfully

when filled with pure R134a. Air entering the system

means a serious problem.

Possible consequences:

› Increased operating pressure and functional

problems of the A/C system

› Corrosion caused by the humidity admitted with

the air

› Substantial strain on the compressor suction and

pressure valves through increased pressure in the

system

› Substantial reduction of the refrigeration

performance

Nitrogen leak check

Environmental protection is not just a catchword – it

is a commitment. In order to protect our environment

it is necessary to release as little refrigerant as

pos-sible into the atmosphere.

In addition to the existing,

fully automatic vacuum leak test function

integra-ted in the service unit it is possible to admit

nitro-gen to the system.

In this manner the disadvantage

of leak tests solely by vacuum (components such as

A/C tubes might contract and thus close a leak) can

be eliminated.

Exposure to pressurised nitrogen

during A/C service tells you immediately whether

the system is tight.

Testing is carried out fully

automatically by the ASC 2000RPA.

The ASC 2000RPA A/C service unit ensures that the A/C

system only contains pure R134a, neither contaminated

with unauthorised refrigerants nor mixed with air.

Prior to the actual recycling process the service unit

automatically removes and analyses a small refrigerant

sample (9.5 g). The results are shown on the unit display.

The operator receives a significant, qualified assessment

of the refrigerant in the A/C system connected to the

service station and can exactly determine what repairs or

maintenance may be required.

If the refrigerant is fine, the ASC 2000RPA continues its

fully automatic programme in the same manner as the

WAECO ASC 2000 system.

Today’s vehicle A/C systems have been developed

to a very high technical standard. Consequently,

A/C service stations are more and more becoming

important measuring systems designed to

safe-guard A/C system functionality. Certain factors must

be considered to realise this aim:

› The accurate observation of the refrigerant

charging level, allowing for very low deviations,

i.e. +/- 15 g

› The optimum oil balance, also with very low

deviations, i.e. +/- 1 g.

A/C service stations should therefore be selected

considering the following:

› High refrigerant charging accuracy?

The synchronised

charging process

is clearly

“audible”!

› Too much or too little oil in the vehicle A/C system

will inevitably cause problems.

Therefore only use A/C service units with high

charging level accuracy!

› How to find a system with high oil (UV additive)

charging accuracy?

It’s quite simple: such systems have only

one

small-capacity weighing cell (typically 8 kg). This is what

makes charging in 1-g steps actually possible!

Disregarding these factors may have the following

consequences:

› Performance loss of the vehicle A/C system

(insufficient cooling capacity)

› Functional problems through overpressure

Flush A/C components instead of replacing

them – save on repair costs

A defective A/C compressor

can have serious

conse-quences. It often occurs that

abrasion particles from

the compressor

enter the A/C system. The abrasion

particles then circulate within the refrigerant circuit

and build up over time. This can lead to time

consu-ming and costly repairs, because all components in

contact with refrigerant usually need to be replaced.

The universal flush container as well as the flush

adapter kit provide a cost-effective solution in such

cases. Using this equipment, which is approved by

major vehicle manufacturers, you can flush the entire

A/C circuit without having to remove a single

compo-nent. Just fit a new refrigerant compressor and the

A/C system is ready for use again.

The universal flush container can also be used with

other manufacturers‘ A/C service units. In that case

the flush process needs to be controlled manually,

though.

The following service units already come

with a software for automatic flush control:

RHS-1050 A/C service units from series 1...,

ASC 1000, ASC 2000, ASC 2000RPA and ASC 3000.

To use the flush function of these A/C service units,

Working clean:

It pays to flush!

Professional service on automotive A/C systems

naturally also includes flushing the system to clear

away aggressive substances and contaminants from

the refrigerant circuit. Flushing protects all parts

of the air conditioner from damage, especially the

compressor being its core component.

You will never get a hundred per cent clean

refrigerant circuit, though. This is because of the

parallel flow evaporator technology commonly used

these days.

We strictly recommend you

to add a

chip

filter

to the suction line when you flush the system.

This will

protect the compressor

and is especially

advisable when you’ve replaced the compressor, as

it will keep the remaining particles away from the

newly fitted unit.

Important note: The chip filter (Ref. No. 8880700246)

should be replaced after every flushing process (for

each vehicle)!

Contaminants harm the air conditioner –

the oil checker detects this danger

The performance of an A/C system stands or

falls with the state of the refrigerant oil.

Serious damage is often caused by

contami-nated oil containing abrasive particles or

metal chips. Another common source of

failure is refrigerant leakage leading to

over-heating of the refrigerant oil and hence to

impaired lubrication. Therefore, it is

absolu-tely necessary to check the compressor oil

before repair work is started.

The oil checker is a safe and simple tool for

“oil sampling” in automotive air conditioners.

It is simply connected to the A/C system‘s two

service ports.

Over the last few years additives have been launched

to the market that are claimed to be able to seal

minor leaks. Caution is advised here, however:

sealants may cure within the system, which may lead

to blockages and cause

damage, e.g. to the dryer

and expansion valve.

For this reason, WAECO does

not use any sealant additives!

Sealants can also harm your A/C service unit.

For

example, a vehicle coming in for service may already

have leak sealants in the air conditioning system.

During refrigerant recovery the sealant will enter –

and possibly damage – your A/C service unit.

A/C service units have various areas where moisture

accumulates (e.g. filters, dryers, oil separators).

These areas are

especially susceptible to sealant

build-up, which can cause serious damage to your

valuable equipment.

The Recycle Guard protects your service unit from

sealant contamination.

This special filter is

con-nected to the unit’s service hoses where it reliably

separates and removes the sealant from the
