Jack And The Cloud Stack: The Oracle Database Cloud

Jack cautiously walked down a dark alley. A quick glance at his watch revealed that it was 04:00am in hell. The familiar pungent odour of the alley filled his mind with doubt - "Why did I become a DBA?", "Why do I get calls from foreign consulting firms at 02:00am to kill sessions and to do the needful?", "Should I tell my parents that I'm adopted?". The sound of thunder and a bright flash triggered an end to his disturbing thoughts. He shielded his eyes from the bright lights and gazed into the distance. Suddenly he was surrounded by a swarm of motorbikes. As the bikers ripped off their helmets, Jack instantly recognised the strange figures. IP the network guy, IO the storage guy, OS the operating system guy, and 50 cents the canteen guy took a few steps forward and

immediately surrounded Jack. An elderly IT manager slowly made his way to the centre where Jack was standing.

IT Manager: "I'm afraid I got some bad news. We ran out of processing capacity on our servers and we can no longer service our clients. I'm giving you the opportunity to join our biker’s gang. I know you don't have a bike, but I'm giving you permission to sell our servers so that you can buy a Big Boy scooter". Jack pondered at the thought of owning a Big Boy scooter and after careful

consideration gracefully accepted the offer.

The next day as he made his way to an IT chop shop he met a salesman. The overanxious salesman leaned forward, lit his electric cigarette and said “I’ve got an opportunity of a lifetime for you. If you give me your servers, I’ll provide you with a magical link to the Oracle Database Cloud”.

Jack: “I’ve heard of the Oracle Database Cloud. Can you tell me more about the architecture it uses?”

Salesman: “The Oracle Database Cloud runs on an Oracle Exadata machine. This machine is so fast it’s faster than chronic diarrhea. On top of that the Database Cloud consists of 4 main components:

1) Oracle Database 11Gr2 Enterprise Edition so you can take advantage of the full monty.

2) Oracle Application Express to rapidly create applications faster than a sweatshop.

3) RESTful Web Services which allows you to access your data in the Database Cloud.

4) Packaged Applications and Sample Code which will make you look like a cloud pimp once you’ve installed the business productivity applications with a few clicks.”

Jack: “Interesting, but what are the advantages of hosting your database in the Cloud?”

Salesman: “Advantages! There are plenty of advantages:

1) Access your database from any supported browser on any platform. Think about all the freedom you will have.

2) Size does matter so the service is available in various sizes to meet your business needs.

3) The monthly subscription cost which is cheaper than plastic surgery includes standard maintenance operations and Oracle support.

4) You can provision your database in a few minutes and immediately be more productive.

5) Includes tools to monitor usage and to manage users.

6) Contains development wizards and interactive reports.

Jack: “What about Security?”

Salesman: “The database cloud service is more secure than a maximum security prison. Data in the cloud is completely separated from data in all other database services. All data stored on the DB cloud uses Transparent Data Encryption. Data loads are sent to a secure FTP server where they are scanned for viruses before the data in the files are loaded. A multi-tenant architecture is used for security with schemas providing the boundaries.”

Jack highly impressed with salesman, immediately accepts the offer and uses the magical link (https://cloud.oracle.com) to register for an Oracle Database Cloud service. The next day he

receives an email from the friendly giant (Oracle) containing all the necessary details for connecting to the databases cloud.

From: Oracle Cloud To: Jack

Email Subject: Welcome to the Oracle Cloud

Fee-fi-fo-fum,

I smell the blood of a Cloudsman,

Be he with little data, or be he with Big data I'll bill this guy to finance my Exadata.

Now that Jack has a database in the cloud let us see how he attempts to load data into the database.

(3)

Step 1

He goes to the Oracle database cloud homepage and logs in using his credentials.

Step 2

Once logged in, he clicks on the identity console button.

Step 3

Once the identity console login page appears, he clicks on Manage Users.

Step 4

He then enters * in the search field and clicks on the search button. Jack selects the sftp user and clicks on ‘Reset Password’. He selects ‘Manually change the Password” option and enters a new password.

Step 5

Jack now installs the latest version of SQL Developer on his laptop and creates a new cloud connection. The cloud connection requires the Database and SFTP user details.

Step 6

Once a new cloud connection is setup he double clicks on the cloud connection and enters his username and password.

Step 7

He opens a Cart by selecting ‘Cart’ from the SQL Developer view menu.

With SQL Developer he then connects to the database (source) that contains the data that he wants to move to the cloud.

(5)

Step 8

He then drags and drops the tables that he wants to upload to the Cart.

Step 9

He clicks on deploy to the cloud icon (cloud icon). This creates a zip file which is deployed to the cloud.

Step 10

Once the deployment is done, he now sees the tables that he uploaded in the Cloud database.

Step 11:

He then uses Apex to create an application and he’s company is ready to use the Cloud service.

(7)

After saving his company from public humiliation, Jack was knighted by the queen and currently has the title of “His Eminent supreme ultimate database mafia administrator”. As for the other members of his team, nobody actually knows what happened to them. However there is an urban legend that talks about a bunch of IT bikers that prowl the streets of Hillbrow looking for failed IT professionals to join their gang.
