BUILDING HISTORY
With the completion of this building in February 1933, local civic leaders realized a twenty-year dream that Norman would have its own federal building.
Previously, the U.S. Postal Service had operated out of rented facilities in town. The construction of the building was seen as a symbol of the permanence and prominence of a community that had grown in population to 9,603 by 1930.
Authorized by the Hoover administration in 1930, the building was designed in Washington in an Art Deco interpretation of the Federal Style architecture.
Construction began in 1932 when the Christy-Dolph Company of Dallas, Texas was awarded the contract for $67,800. Local companies served as subcontractors, providing a welcome boost to the depression era economy.
The building served the citizens of Norman until 1965 when a new facility was constructed two blocks to the west. In 1966 ownership was transferred to the
Norman Public School System.
