NURSING B257: COURSE ORIENTATION

The instructional syllabus is an essential part of the learning process. It serves as a learning contract that clearly states the responsibilities of both the student and the

instructor. It outlines information such as the student learning outcomes, course policies, teaching and learning activities, evaluation process, and assignments. Additionally, the syllabus help promote independent student learning and accountability in the educational process.

OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this unit, the student will be able to:

1. Explain course policies, expectations, and requirements. 2. State the attendance policy.

3. Adhere to all guidelines as outlined in the Bakersfield College Associate

Degree Nursing Program Student Handbook and the instructional syllabus.

4. Relate Student Learning Outcomes to Program Level Outcomes. Please refer to the Bakersfield College Associate Degree Nursing Program Student

Handbook for Program Level Outcomes.

5. Describe the requirements and expectations for assignments. 6. Verbalize the standard utilized for student evaluation.

Nursing B257: Nursing Laboratory Externship Instructional Syllabus

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course provides Registered Nursing students with an opportunity to obtain clinical experience in the application of all previously learned knowledge and skills in various clinical settings. Students will work in a collaborative role with clinical preceptors. This will allow students to practice more independently under the supervision of clinical agency personnel. This will increase the student’s nursing judgment, skills, critical thinking skills, and competency. The clinical experience in the externship will better prepare students as they assume the role of the professional graduate nurse.

Units / hours: 1 – 3 units (54 – 162 hours). Repeat: 2. CCS: Occupational Education. Offered: F, S, SS. Not transferable: Associate Degree only.

Prerequisites: Current enrollment, in good standing in the ADN program and completion of all 3rd semester courses; and completion of Nurs B256 OR evaluation by all 3rd semester instructors of student’s nursing skills.

PROGRAM STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

The Bakersfield College Associate Degree Nursing Program is designed to prepare graduates to competently transition from student to entry level Registered Nurse as defined by these roles: Provider of Care, Manager of Care, and Member of the Profession. Please refer to Associate Degree Nursing Student Handbook. Upon completion of the program, the graduate shall be able to function as a:

A. Provider of Care --- The graduate will provide safe nursing care through therapeutic nursing interventions to clients with critical and complex disease states. The care is characterized by consistent critical thinking and problem-solving skills, clinical competence, accountability, effective communication skills,

B. Manager of Care --- The graduate will provide safe nursing care consistently utilizing critical thinking skills for clients who have critical and complex disease states. The care is characterized by the ability to assess and establish priority of care for a group of client’s and delegation of appropriate aspects of nursing care to licensed and unlicensed personnel and directs their activities. The manager of care collaborates with other members of the health care team, including

organizational and community resources, using effective oral and written

communication sills. The manager of care recognizes roles and responsibilities within the levels of the career ladder and is competent in using technology to provide evidence-based nursing care.

C. Member of the Profession --- The graduate will consistently demonstrate accountability, advocacy, legal/ethical and caring behavior, and responsibility for one’s own professional growth, behavior, and formal/informal education. The graduate nurse routinely participates in self-evaluation and makes changes to improve the practice of nursing, with the ultimate goal of making positive contributions to the nursing profession.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon completion of the Nursing Laboratory Externship, the student will function effectively in the roles of Provider and Manager of Care, and as a Member of the Profession, and will be able to:

1. Develop/coordinate/evaluate care to individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations; able to identify the rationale for care and competently deliver this care to an increasingly complex and diverse population in multiple environments, utilizing the nursing process.

2. Demonstrate effective communication with clients, families, and other health care team members in all health care settings.

3. Advocate for the client, profession, and the interdisciplinary health care team in an effort to ensure that clients, families, and communities are well informed and included in care planning.

4. Educate clients, families, and health care professionals under their supervision using appropriate teaching principles, strategies and current information.

5. Anticipate risks to the client and provides appropriate interventions to achieve optimal client outcomes.

6. Demonstrate critical thinking to problem solve, organize, and prioritize care for individuals or a group of clients.

7. Integrate current technology to provide competent client care.

8. Manage human and fiscal resources in an efficient and cost effective manner. 9. Serve as a leader and partner in the interdisciplinary health care team.

10. Demonstrate accountability for the provision and evaluation of nursing care that conforms to professional standards and incorporates legal and ethical responsibilities of the nurse, especially the rights of the clients.

11. Demonstrate increased confidence and / or competence in the use of critical thinking in determining nursing care.

COURSE ACTIVITIES

Instructional and learning activities are directly related to Student Learning Outcomes and unit objectives with an emphasis on the nursing process. Various learning activities such as class discussions, individual discussing with the instructor, skills demonstrations, field work, written assignments, and instructor evaluation of student competencies are also employed.

COURSE ASSIGNMENTS

Students are required to attend the course orientation meeting, secure employment at an approved acute care facility, submit personal learning objectives, submit a Memorandum of Understanding, submit journal entries, complete a final self – evaluation, and meet the requirements for class meetings and clinical hours in order to successfully meet the objectives for Nursing B257. Detailed instructions for each assignment are located in the

Assignment section of the syllabus.

COURSE POLICIES

General: Students are expected to attend each class, be punctual, assume responsibility for assigned activities, be active participants in the learning process, and meet all established Student Learning Outcomes.

Cell phones and pagers must be turned off or placed in silent / vibrate mode.

No children will be allowed in the classroom or clinical setting.

Laboratory Attire: Students are to adhere to the dress code as outlined in the Bakersfield College Associate Degree Nursing Program Student

Attendance: Students are expected to attend each scheduled class meeting. Students must work a minimum of 54 hours in the clinical facility for each unit of credit for the course.

Attendance: Students must abide by the attendance policies of the clinical facility. Professionalism, responsibility, and accountability are expected. Notification of instructor(s) of all scheduled shifts including the unit, shift, and hours, additions, cancellations, sick calls.

If schedule change is more than 48 hours of shift – phone call and / or email is acceptable.

If schedule change is less than 48 hours – student must call the instructor. Leaving a voicemail is acceptable.

Cell phone numbers for instructors are provided. At least one instructor is on call at all times while the class is in session.

Course Nursing B257 Course Evaluations are a requirement of this course. Evaluation: Students are expected to provide one Form 20 – S Scantron to

complete the evaluation.

STUDENT EVALUATION

Evaluation is an ongoing, essential process in education, by which the student is

apprised of his / her progress in meeting the Student Learning Objectives and Program Level Outcomes. Credit for this course is earned by completing the minimum clinical hours with satisfactory evaluations by preceptors and course instructor(s), attending class meetings, and completing all required paperwork.

ASSIGNMENTS

COURSE ORIENTATION

All students must attend scheduled orientation meeting the semester prior to starting work as a nurse extern. Date and time will be announced each semester.

EMPLOYMENT

First, all students must secure approval of their choice of hospital with the course instructor. Once instructor approval is granted, the student must contact the

representative of the hospital of their choice for information regarding the hiring process and the required hospital orientation.

PERSONAL LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Students must submit three (3) learning objectives to the instructor(s) prior to the first scheduled shift. Objectives need to address their personal goals, as well as the course’s Student Learning Outcomes. They must be well thought out, measurable, and clearly stated.

MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING

The Memorandum of Understanding must be signed by the student, hospital

representative, and course faculty. This document must be completed, and submitted, prior to the first scheduled shift.

JOURNAL ENTRIES

Each student must complete journal entries summarizing their daily experiences and nursing interventions. Address progress with learning objectives, observations of the RN role including leadership, prioritization, and delegation, and any legal / ethical issues encountered.

Final self – evaluation:

For the final journal entry, students must also include thoughts about the extern experience, overall, including a description of how the experience(s) as a nurse extern has benefited them in their personal growth in the role of the (student) registered nurse. Please include the unit(s) and facility.

CLASS MEETINGS

All class meetings are mandatory attendance. Failure to attend these meetings may result in “no credit” for this course.

CLINICAL HOURS

All students are required to complete a minimum of 54 hours. These are to be documented on the hours log provided, and totaled by the student at the end of the semester.

STUDENT EVALUATION

Students must submit an evaluation completed by their RN preceptor, and signed by the preceptor and course faculty. Final evaluation and grading are the responsibility of the course instructor(s).

COURSE EVALUATION

Course evaluations are required of this course. Evaluations will be conducted at the end of the semester, online, at a time to be arranged. In the event the online evaluation tool is not available, the evaluation will be completed using scantrons, Form 20-S.
