URGENT MESSAGE FOR ALL STATE
DIRECTORS AND CLUBS PARTICIPATING
IN THE RMFMS INSURANCE PROGRAM
At the Executive Board Meeting, Friday, June 9 and again at the DELEGATE’s meeting, Saturday, June 10, in Stillwater Oklahoma, a motion was approved that ALL INSURANCE APPLICATIONS FOR ADDITIONAL INSURED and the CHECK FOR $50.00 be sent to the Insurance Chair, Arlene Burklhalter, 1267 Kingbird Ln, Choctaw, OK 73020.Please send your application in, at least one month in advance so that there will be time for processing, both by Arlene and the insurance company. She will be able to tell you whether or not she received your request and when it was transmitted to Brown & Brown, and also if the certificate has been issued and where it was sent. She receives a copy of each certificate issued.
It was felt that having one person know what was going on with the additional insured application would be easier on all concerned. Arlene’s telephone number is 405-732-0808 and her answering machine will pick up if she is not home. Please leave a message stating your name and number and the club you represent. She will return your call as soon as possible and should be able to answer your questions or will find the answers for you.
YOU WILL CONTINUE TO SEND DUES PAYMENTS AND INSURANCE PAYMENTS FOR CLUB PARTICIPATION IN RMFMS TO THE TREASURER.

A Challenge from the Editor!
I n t h e O c t o b e r 2 0 0 5 i s s u e o f t h e R o c k y M o u n t a i n Federation News, I asked for submission of articles from Committee chairpersons, State directors, Technical Advisors, club Presidents, club field-trip chairs, club newsletter editors and even club members. I have been very disappointed by the response.
In the March 2006 issue I did print, on the front page, a wonderful article by Norma Beers “Our Children Are Our Future”. Norma has sent a follow-up article and some pictures which I printed on page 8.

President’s Message
By Richard JaegerThe Rocky Mountain Federation Convention and Show was held in June in Stillwater, Oklahoma and was by all measures another successful event in spite of record setting high temperatures. The show had many excellent dealers, displays, working exhibits, programs, kid’s activities, etc. There were 14 competitive exhibits, 5 of which were awarded trophies. The Editor’s Breakfast and Awards Banquets were well attended and the food was good. (In a highly questionable move the Past President’s Ad Hoc Committee on the Hat assessed me a fine of $10 payable to the AFMS Scholarship Foundation.) The Executive Committee met on Friday while the annual Delegates Meeting was on Saturday. Thirty clubs were represented at the Delegates Meeting with twenty-six the minimum number needed for a quorum; this was a slight improvement over the last two or three meetings. On Sunday we had a special meeting of the Public Lands Advisory Committee which was attended by a good number of people; we also had a Rollin’ Rock Club meeting that morning. Show Chairman Charles Ramming and the whole Stillwater club are to be congratulated for the outstanding job they did in hosting the Federation Show.
Because of health reasons Keith Price has had to resign as RMFMS Treasurer; Keith had served in this position since 1992 and has given dedicated service to the Federation for which we are grateful. Finance Chairman Dan Lingelbach has been serving as interim Treasurer since April and is in the process of turning over the Treasurer’s materials to Gene Maggard who was elected to that position at the Delegates Meeting. Gene was the RMFMS Show Chairman in 2004 and served as Parliamentarian this year; I am looking forward to having Gene on the E x e c u t i v e C o m m i t t e e a n d k n o w h e w i l l d o a n e x c e l l e n t j o b . Yonis Lone Eagle was elected to take over the job of New Mexico/Texas State Director from Howie Whiting. Yonis has served in this position before and again I know he will do an excellent job. There will be changes in several committee positions but I will wait until the next issue to go into those.
I do need to say something about hosting RMFMS Shows. As you know Roswell will host the combined AFMS/RMFMS Convention and Show in 2007 and Tulsa will host the 2008 Show. At the Roswell Show I hope we have applications for at least the 2009 and 2010 shows. I want all clubs in the federation to understand a few things about hosting the Convention/Show. Basically you run the show just like you would your normal club show with a few changes, which may be different for some of you. The RMFMS needs to have the following: It needs to be a three-day show and it needs to have a headquarters hotel/motel. Space needs to be provided for the Executive Committee meeting on Friday and for the Annual Delegate’s Meeting on Saturday. Arrangements need to be made for the Editor’s Breakfast on Saturday morning and for the Awards Banquet Saturday evening. I also want you to know that competitive completion is part of the Federation Show but that the RMFMS provides the judges, trophies, and ribbons for that competition; your club simply needs to let the Uniform Rules Chairman know how many competitive cases are entered and in what categories so that he may make the arrangements. You must also know that the profits from your show are President Continued on page 3
QUICK TIPS for EDITORS
By Linda Jaeger
RMFMS Club Publications Chair
If you have a question (or suggestion) about editing or writing or the bulletin contest or something related, send it to me by email: [email protected] or at home address: 3515 E. 88th St.,
Tulsa OK 74137. If I cannot find an answer to your question, we’ll publish the question and ask the readers for their answers.
Catch a Title by the Tail . . .
Twist it and twirl it and tweak it ‘til your reader can’t resist it!
The first thing a reader sees is the whole page. Graphics, type face, and the right white space will draw his eyes to your title. That’s when he decides whether to read what you’ve written. So how do you come up with a catchy title?
1. Try using alliteration. “Ridge Reveals Rugose Coral” is an example of alliteration, where several words in succession begin with the same letter(s) or sound. For some reason we are drawn to expressions like “Rubber Baby Buggy Bumpers,” perhaps because it’s a challenge to say it even once!
2. Make a play on words so the title has more than one appropriate meaning. “Mrs. J Rocks!” and “Kids Dig Fossil Bones” each have more than one meaning. Are you curious yet?
3. Ask a question. “There’s a Rock in My What?!!” or “What the Heck is a Bucky Ball?” are both questions that can really make your reader’s ears stand up. Questions almost beg to be heard as well as seen.
4. Be Direct. If you’re writing a “how to” article, you can begin the title with “How to” do whatever you’re writing about, but add something that tells the reader why your method is great. “How to Cut Cabs and Keep Your Fingernails” or “How to Clean a Fossil the Easy Way” are both very direct. These titles can also be written without using “how to.” “Cut a Cab and Keep Your Fingernails” is even more direct, as is “Cleaning Fossils With Ease.” Another direct title – but not for a “how to” article - is “The Trouble with Fossils.” This pulls you in to read because you wonder what kind of trouble this is!
5. Do a “take off” on a slogan or popular
phrase. “Got Labels?” at show time for an article
on labels for competitive cases is a take off on the “Got Milk?” slogan.
6 . U s e a d i c t i o n a r y o r t h e s a u r u s t o f i n d synonyms for what you’re writing about. If you use a computer you may have both as part of your word processing software.
7. Brainstorm with a buddy or your editor. Bounce words and ideas off each other -this can be fun and educational. There’s nothing like a good laugh!
A catchy title can make the difference between an article that’s read and enjoyed and reprinted, and a good article that readers miss. Use the title to sell your reader on the article.

to be split 50/50 with the RMFMS but that you can petition to have parts of you show such as perhaps grab bags, kid’s games, or silent auction exempt from that split if you wish. Therefore it doesn’t really have to be a 50/50 split. Also, the Federation will provide you with a loan of $750 to help with early show expenses.
The things listed above are show requirements. Certainly you may do other things to enhance the show if you wish. For example, we like to have each state in the Federation put in a case of material found in their state; to do this we would need to have you provide up to nine cases (some State Directors may choose to bring their own). Roger Pittman and the Colorado Springs Club have prepared a CD on putting on a show, which will be available through the Supplies Chairman. Each club will do things a bit differently but it can give you some good ideas and does mention the different requirements needed for a Federation Show. Personally I would like to encourage clubs who have not hosted a RMFMS Show recently -or ever - to consider putting in an application; I believe there is great value to having the show in different areas of our region each year. Please let me know if you have any questions; I will be more than happy to work with you and I think you will find that hosting a show can be a rewarding experience for your own club as well as doing a service for our Federation.

The spring Kansas State “unofficial” Meeting was called to order at 2 p.m., Ellinwood Swap, under the big tent, Ellinwood, Kansas, May 20, 2006. The above members were in attendance. An a g e n d a w a s f o l l o w e d a f t e r t a k i n g r o l l a n d announcements of the RMFMS Meeting and Show, June 9-11 at Stillwater.
The state director told of all State Clubs and Societies having sent in their dues, that the RMFMS Show case for Kansas will be entered by the McPherson Club and that replacement of Keith Price, Treasurer, is needed, the state of health of Louellen Montgomery and the Kans. St. Dir. questions about running for another term because of “old” age.
The agenda followed:
Future Rockhounds of America. The state director urged Clubs who are working with the badge program to send in a show specimen to Stillwater to be judged, even if deadline is past. The St. Dir. offered to deliver. Curly reported that two Juniors were working on it and is hopeful of more. The McPherson Club was reported to have a like number. Discussion supported this program but advised that taking on the full program takes a special determination. No one questions the i m p o r t a n c e o f g e t t i n g J u n i o r s i n v o l v e d . Howie Whiting is to be commended for his continued hard work on this.
Publications from RMFMS, particularily PLA was brought up. Goodnough reported that he had made contact with folks working on ALAA. It is being organized but didn’t have an answer as to how soon we will be getting any mailings on it. This brought up the announcement about three stories being sent to the Editor of the RMFMS monthly bulletin. There is the question as to whether this meant the Clubs sending these stories in or the State Director or either. The St. Dir. expressed that it would be good to have success or special project stories from the Clubs. A question caused a discussion on whether they could send stories from their bulletin and who would be responsible. Inquiries to Sandy, the Editor, will be made.
Membership discussion bought on the comment by Curly that you lose a few and you gain a few. Closely related to membership are the field trips. He stated that field trips is what puts “blood” in a Club. Reps from the McPherson Club suggested their growth to 100 members is in large part related to the excellent field trips since the present field trip leader took over. Lois is a 4-H Geology leader who goes all out to plan the trip to the mile and minute and shows samples of what is to be found because she has made the trip herself. In fact the Club pays her expenses to make this explorative trip. This is one of the big items related to membership and the other is Programs. The McPherson Club thinks that having the Juniors get up and make a presentation of their projects, that is called the Jr. Spot, has helped their Junior program and membership. Their writing up their presentation and having it printed up in the Club Bulletin is positive, too. Club bulletins didn’t get covered much for some reason, but this Dir. would urge Club Officers not to under estimate the value of Editors and Bulletins, as it is applied to membership. Don’t forget friendship and getting the new members into offices or on projects soon.
At the last “unofficial” meeting, discussion was on handing out health forms. They came in handy again this year with one member ending up in the emergency room during a field trip. The field trip leader had a copy of his record to give the doctor in charge. All agreed this is a must on field trips. The McPherson Club field trip leader collects these forms from all the members and has them with her on all the trips.
Judy Beck, past RMFMS President started a Sister Club program. Members were asked if they had heard from their appointed sister Clubs. No body spoke up, so conclude that this idea didn’t take too well. Curly observed that it is good to know folks when making trips and a Sister Club would be helpful. The McPherson Club hasn’t received anything from our Federation Clubs, but have received rocks and Bulletins from two Clubs, one in the state of Washington and one in Oregon. The McPherson Club has responded in kind. The samples they sent, thou small, well represented rocks of their area. If any other Club in Kansas has received anything, no body has reported such. (If any of you have received word or s o m e t h i n g f r o m y o u r s i s t e r C l u b , o r o t h e r Federations, please let me know.)
Golden Belt Gem and Mineral Society president, Richard Goodnough, was given the floor to conduct some business of their Club. Many of the group are members, too. After appreciative comments from the St. Dir. and annoucing that the next meeting will be in Topeka next fall, urging all to attend the Meeting in Stillwater and there being no further business the meeting was adjourned.
Unofficial
continued from page 6State of Kansas Annual Report for
2005-2006
The seven clubs in Kansas continue to meet and send in dues to the Federation. The larger clubs are maintaining members. The word at a recent “unofficial” state meeting on membership was— ”we gain a few and we lose a few.” The McPherson Club has reached the 100 member number which indicates that there are rockhounds out there and will become club members if you have a strong club and have exciting and productive field trips. We believe in having a “think tank” session occasionally to discuss how we are doing and why. Our biggest goal is to have gopd leadership in v i t a l a r e a s , a n d a n i n v i g o r a t i n g B o a r d o f Directors. This is nothing new of course, but it needs to be given much consideration. We are fortunate in having outstanding 4-H leaders for the Field Trip Captain and the Junior program. We believe that the Juniors are a big part of the field
trips. Our program chairman is a long time Rockhound that knows hunting areas in the states first hand, and people who can give exciting and interesting programs. We like to emphasize friendship, helpfullness and door prizes, too. Having a prize winning Bulletin editor and prize winning monthly Club Bulletin doesn’t hurt anything either. Again we have Juniors participate i n t h e m o n t h l y p r o g r a m b y t h e i r g i v i n g a presentation and then writing it up and run in the bulletin. These in turn are entered in the Editor’s contest along with the adult articles resulting in a fun Editor’s breakfast at the annual meeting. A publicity chairman that knows her way around is a big plus, too. These are points that the other clubs go by, too, so excuse me, please, for using my club as an example, but I know them best. A d d i t i o n a l p o i n t s w o u l d i n c l u d e p r e s e n t i n g programs to Civic Clubs, schools and other Rock Hound occasions, putting up gem, rock and fossil displays in Libraries and at public functions. We’ll be having a booth at the fall festival in the museum park. etc.
I appreciate that this is all old hat but not all the clubs do these things. There is an old take that if you build the “Ball Park,” they (Rockhounds) will come. There’s lot of help if you want it.
At the “unofficial” meetings, questions are asked if there are problems that the Federation can help with. One club member had a complaint on holding the Fed. meeting. There was adding programs, not listed, that messed up their time schedule. Please don’t do this, he advised. Also, please have rockhounds having cases to give total information, or making changes after idents are posted, particularily those that are exhibited in honor of someone. Another point brought out was the three stories per year to the Federation Bulletin editor. Were these to be sent in by the Clubs or State Director or either? PLA officers are c o n c e r n e d a b o u t n o t g e t t i n g m a i l i n g s . I understand ALAA is in state of reorganizing. Please give update on this matter. Branching has not caught on.
I attended the RMFMS Meeting and Show in Colorado Springs, my “unofficial” meeting in Ellinwood, sent two State Director reports to all Clubs in Kansas, was present at Ellinwood Rock Swap, participated in the McPherson Rock Swap, and visited Wichita Club.

Annual Meeting and Show.
by Marvin Lundquist, Kansas State Director
Executive Meeting, June 9, 2006, opened by President Richard Jaeger.
There were 20 clubs and societies reporting. One of the first items was using e-mail as much as possible, even sending out the monthly RMF News. This was pointed out because Pres. Richard reported that it cost $150.00 to make the mailings pertaining to this meeting. To those who don’t have use of the computor, it was urged that they use the cheapest means. He strongly urged members to use the State Director to channel concerns to the RMFMS Officers to get the information you need, including proxies for meetings.
Considerable discussion was on PLAC and ALAA. Many meetings have been held about this and a consoritium is in the works, and any plan will be presented in the RMF News as soon as possible. A problem is getting your input in time to get to the legislators that make the votes, if you can get it to the man you want. Don’t use form letters because if a group sends these in they only count as one vote. In other words if your group sends them in as a group, all those 20 form letters, for example, will only count as one vote. If you want your letter to count, please send in a hand written letter or note addressed to your congressman; even scribbling works, but no way a form letter. Then there is the time element. Someone followed a personel letter to a congressmen and by the time it went through all the filtering stops, it took almost two months to get that letter into the congressman’s hand. If you want to write your man just sit down now and write it.
Director reports would conclude that membership is down somewhat, but the larger Clubs continue to get a few new members, but also, lose a few. Leadership, programs and field trips are the big items in any success; and Club Bulletins doesn’t hurt any either. President Richard stressed that he would like more contact and input from RMFMS Officers; and reports from Clubs would be welcome. I suspect that some Club Officers would l i k e m o r e i n p u t f r o m F e d e r a t i o n O f f i c e r s . Remember, there is the State Director to make contact, too. In regard to the annual RMFMS meeting, if your club can not send a delegate, please make out proxies and send to me so your Club will be represented.
Hall of Delegates Meeting, June 10, 1 p.m., Stillwater Fair Grounds, opened by President Richard.
There were reports by Officers, State Directors, and Committees. My annual report is attached. Report was made on condition of Keith Price, t r e a s u r e r. H e i s i n b a d h e a l t h a n d i n a nursing home and has resigned his office. Dan Lingelbach had been appointed acting treasurer and during the meeting was voted to be treasurer. His report gave a balance of $17,880 as of 4-28-06. The report included that during Keith’s time, he didn’t renew an application for renewal of the Federation logo. He needed to renew every 6 years, Keith evidently thought it was 10 years. Now trying to get this renewed but there are complications on this. Probably be hearing more about this, but right now it is a stinker...
I f t h e r e a r e any q u e s t i o n s a b o u t t h e Federation Insurance Plan, please contact Arlene Burkhalter. Howie Whiting wants more Junior participation. Only four entries were on display at the Show. The McPherson Club had two of them. Sorry but we didn’t get the $25.00 prize. If your Society or Club Juniors belong to the Future Rock Hounds of America Program, they are eligible to enter this Contest. The entry forms are in the material sent you by the host Club. Please contact me if you are interested and I can take the entries to Roswell with me next June; or if you don’t belong to the FRHA Program and want to join, let me know and I’ll make connections. Howie is working hard on this and wants your Juniors to participate in this great Program. Let’s have a bunch next year!
The Webmaster, Jim McGarvey and others, are working hard to get us into the Web site business. If you have notices of Meetings, Shows, Rock Stories, ALAA and others, please send them to the Webmaster, or me and I’ll see they are sent on. The Stamp Program is no longer paying out so suggesting you continue to collect but your Club Members make book marks or something similar and sell them as a Club Project and send the money to the Scholarship Fund. They were s e l l i n g t h e s e b o o k m a r k s a t t h e m e e t i n g . Fluorescent Programs are always popular. Any questions on this Program should be directed to Chet Hazelwood.
RMFMS directory people appreciates everybody’s cooperation.
The 2007 RMFMS Meeting and Show will be in Roswell, New Mexico in June. A CD prepared by the Roswell Club is in the Club president’s envelope. The 2008 Meeting and Show will be during Oct. in Tulsa, OK.
Have a Great Year!
Notes
continued on page 9Our Children Are Our Future
- continued by Norma Beers- RMFMS Public RelationsI just finished getting Wyoming rocks sorted, labeled, and ready to document, then to the museum. I have a mountain of rocks in labeled beer flats. Some of the specimens I have are now closed to hunting! Having everything labeled has been a blessing. Bars give me empty beer flats and I get covers for them and each box is labeled with name and location of the rock.
How about letting me know what your club is doing for school children and we’ll get it in the Rocky Mountain News. We need all the input we can get. One big thing I discovered from all my years of taking my collection to schools is that teachers don’t really know too much about geology. So you need to get charts of the composition of the earth, of Laurasia and Gondwanaland and where your state was. I have a map showing how computers have fitted out continents into a mass. Our teachers don’t seem to have access to the age of rocks and the eras of fossils. Wyoming actually has visual confirmation of how two continents collided in Highway 34 on the way from Wheatland to Laramie. The north side of the canyon is older than the south! We have a shear zone between Wyoming and Colorado and up the eastern edge of Wyoming. I found that teachers know the composition of rocks but not the “fun” knowledge of how they got there. What is interesting about Wyoming, is that we have nearly all the oldest rocks — tungston, feldspar, jade, uranium, gold, banded magnetite iron, copper, beryl, lepidolite etc. I put our algae in the frame, too, as that “rock” is 1.7 billion years old!
I take rocks and fossils in display boxes and also a lot to pass around. I actually found one 6th grader who knew what a fulgerite was. (I have one 12 inches long to display in the museum).
In Wyoming we have sapphires, coal, diamonds, gold, silver, garnets, oil, gas, etc. Our neat geologists in Laramie have maps of where coal is mined, oil is found, where we can find diamonds, etc. I’m certain
you can obtain similar maps from your geologists. I’ll be happy to share any charts I have. Just let me know.

Top: Rock Box, Bottom: Mineral Box - both with Lamenate labels with numbered specimens, by the Ft. Collins Rockhounds.
editors note: Norma’s article was mailed to me on March 21. She also included an article from the Boulder City Front Range “Solid as a Rock, Middle school students can’t get enough of the hard stuff”. Fort Collins Rockhounds worked hours to build rock sets that they donated to the Lucile Erwin Middle School science program. (Due to copywrite I was not able to print the article.)
