Dear Friends,

What better way to celebrate the summer season than to enjoy a picnic with friends and family while listening to the best in local entertainment? Indy Parks is dedicated to bringing the arts to a larger audience in Indianapolis, and we are pleased to share with you the great diversity of arts activities available in the city’s parks. The roster of music performances feature the nation’s most prestigious orchestra, progressive jazz and blues artists and familiar big band and pops concerts.

Experience a variety of unique visual art exhibits featuring the works from local, national and international artists. Of course, it wouldn’t be summer without Movies in the Park! Take time out of your busy schedule and bring the whole family to enjoy a summer- long calendar of free shows, concerts, art exhibits, and events at Indy Parks.

The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1930, is a full-time,

professional orchestra that performs 200 concerts a year for more than 350,000 people. It is the largest performing arts organization in the state of Indiana, and one of only 18 year-round orchestras in the nation. The primary conductors of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra are Music Director Mario Venzago and Principal Pops Conductor Jack Everly. The Conductor Laureate is Raymond Leppard.

Advanced Middle Eastern Dance with Faten Ali Munger

This is Middle-eastern dance training for dancers who aspire to be professionals and performers. Previous dance experience in this art-form is required. Advanced skills in veil, finger cymbals and choreography will be central to the content and instruction in this class.

The Garfield Park Arts Center engages Indianapolis residents in an artistic and cultural celebration through programs and instruction in a variety of mediums, including the performing, visual, production, and literary arts. The Arts Center features: a multi-use performing arts space, visual arts gallery, classrooms, and literary arts library. Since its opening in May 2006, the Arts Center has presented programs that celebrate the richness of Indianapolis’ diverse cultures and

presented art exhibitions and concerts featuring the talents of local, national and international artists.

Summer Open Studio for Kids—Painting, 3-D & Multi-media

An open studio class specifically for children. Class will include painting, hand building sculpture, tiles, bowls and making unique objects. Children will create several individual works and a large mural piece at the end of the 8 week class, and will have an opportunity to exhibit their works.

Open Studio—Painting for Adults with Glen Walker

In this open painting studio you will learn the basic techniques and materials of painting and to begin to develop a personal vision through the investigation of various subject matter and issues in painting.

This will be a studio course, with a large amount of class time devoted to studio work and discussion. Throughout the studio students will complete projects investigating different aspects of painting.

Open Studio—Sculpture & Claywork with Ryan Van Hoy

This sculpture studio provides students with an in-depth exposure to a wide range of approaches to producing sculpture.

It will explore fundamental concepts of sculpture and investigate the discovery of relationships between volume, texture, and space. Problems in three-dimensional form will be examined through projects in Papier Mache, clay, found objects, and plaster.

**Student will provide their own supplies, to be determined at the first studio class session.

Bembe Afro-Rican Drum Ensemble “Bomba y Pleina”

Friday, June 22; 7PM

Kick off your summer with at the Latino Arts Celebration 2007 with an evening of Puerto Rican “Bomba y Pleina” drumming and dance with Bembe. This exciting event features musical and dance performances that will have your feet tapping and hips swinging!

Bembe Drumming Workshop Saturday, June 23; 12-2PM

Learn how to drum like a Bembe! Join in the fun at the Garfield Park Arts Center as Bembe members explore the African roots of the rhythms of Puerto Rico and Cuba.

Participants should bring their own drums. This event is free and open to the public.

Latino Arts Celebration - VIVA CUBA!

Friday, July 20; 6PM-10PM

Featuring artist Hector Del Campo, Bethrum Cooper Jr. and Grupo Yaya with Manol Yanes & Wlille Crespo.

The Garfield Park Arts Center will showcase some of Indianapolis’ finest visual artists and performers presenting work based on a Cuban theme. The gallery will feature an exhibit of works by Cuban artist Hector Del Campo and other local, national and international artists. Enjoy a performance by Afro-Cuban music groups Grupo Yaya and hip-hop flavored Latin music of Yerba Buena.

Bring the whole family to view work created with Cuban themes by children of the

“Mi Familia” summer arts program. Guests will also experience an uplifting drum and dance performance by Garfield Park Arts Center dance program students.

*Exhibit will be open from June 22-- August 31, 2006 during regular Arts Center Hours.*

Mi Familia Latin Arts Academy 2007

Indy Parks will offer a free 4 week intensive arts academy program. Professional artists will present structured, hands-on arts programming and performances in various Latin Arts disciplines centering upon a CUBAN theme and will expose youth to new and unique cultural mediums such as Afro-Cuban music and instrument making, traditional Cuban dance, and visual arts activities. Students will study Spanish language and the works of Cuban authors and artists,

culminating in such projects as themed murals and an exhibit and performance at the Latin Arts Celebration.

“Sounds of the Ancestors”

A Summer-long exploration of African drumming, its history and techniques with Master Drummer, Bana Yohdidiyoh. The free class provides the ancient history of the what, when, where and why the drum is used in African society. Students will also have a hands-on experience in playing many of the different drum “voices” or instruments in African music. Students should attend with the intention of participating in an African Drum ensemble for performance. Bring your own drum, if preferred.

Fiddling Around—Suzuki Violin for Beginners

Budding violinists should bring their own little fiddles for this fun introduction to playing the violin by the Suzuki Method with Robin Williams. Young violinists will learn basic techniques and how to play by ear and with rhythm. Students will also learn to translate what they have learned by ear to a written page of music.

Mr. P.E. MacAllister is a local businessman whose good fortune has permitted an extensive involvement in the arts, convinced that such enjoyment is a life- long experience. He is active in the world of opera, theatre, symphony, local television, and has a long relationship with academe, college, and church.

Mr. MacAllister also chaired the Indianapolis Parks Foundation and helped launch the restoration campaign for the MacAllister Center in 1995. August 16, 1997 marked the dedication of the renovations to the facility. The amphitheater was renamed in honor of P.E. MacAllister in 1994 due to his philanthropic, civic, and community support of the arts in Indianapolis.

Garfield Park Conservatory And Sunken Garden

Discover beautiful blooms and lush gardens at Garfield Park Conservatory and Sunken Garden. The conservatory houses 10,000 square feet of plants from the world’s tropics. Even if it’s snowing outside, the conservatory is always in full bloom.

The Sunken Garden includes three acres of European classical formal gardens.

The garden’s graceful historic fountains, paved walkways and benches throughout the landscape, make it a gorgeous and relaxing retreat from city life.
