Ministry Fair October 9/10 As we begin to emerge from the Covid pandemic we continue to evaluate what is safe for us and what we are comforta- ble doing. The success of our parish is based on the par- ticipation of our members. The weekend of October 10/11 we will have a Ministry Fair at Coffee and Donuts.

Prior to that you will receive a mailing for our annual stewardship appeal. There will be a list of the many min- istries at Lumen Christi. Please consider what God is asking of you and how you can support our community.

We do have an urgent need for more Mass Ministers:

Greeter/Ushers, Servers, Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, hospitality servers for coffee and donuts and the Loaves and Fishes ministry. We hope to see you that weekend!

Monthly Food Market Collection Oct. 2/3 The first full weekend of every month is our food market collection for Francis Basket run by Neighborhood House. Thank you for fighting food insecurity in our community.

Ministry Scheduler Pro!

This new tool makes it easy to volunteer and reschedule when conflicts pop up! It is a website and app schedul- ing tool that makes it easy for volunteers to minister, es- pecially those with limited schedules. There will be meetings in the Community Room after all of the Masses this weekend. If you are interested in becoming a liturgi- cal minister with this new flexibility, consider attending the training session after Mass (it’s short, less than a half hour) or contact Amy Wittak, Director of Liturgy.

Financial Stewardship

From Ryan Rehkamp, Parish Director Below is a graph of total collections for 2016 through 2021.

The dollar amount represents all money that the parish received in that year.

This includes our food market support, funeral fees, special collections and emergency aid appeals.

2021 is lower because the year has not finished and December is generally our strongest month for collections.

Why am I bringing this up now?

Because October is when we generally do our stewardship appeal and remind you, the faithful parishioner, that the parish needs your support.

As we come out of this pandemic we have two options: We can reinvest in our faith and our community and grow stronger and more committed than ever before or we can let collections continue the downward trend and slowly fade away.

During the height of the shutdown in 2020, several generous parishioners stepped up with larger than nor- mal one time gifts which account for the rise in 2020. Now that the pandemic is slowly fading, we need that same commitment and belief to reinvest in our parish.

Lumen Christi is asking you to consider increasing your annual gift by 3% this year.

If that happens, we will reach roughly 1.6 million dollars in collections.

This is the base amount the parish needs to operate with current expenses.

A 5% increase in average collections would let us look at expanding future ministries and allow us to reach out to new families.

We ask that you prayerfully consider what that 3% or 5% looks like to you and your family and how it might impact the parish we call home.

All parishioners should receive a mailing within the next week with a letter from Fr. Paul, and a 2022 Financial Commitment form. Thank you for taking the time to complete and return the Financial Commit- ment form. There will also be a list of the many ministries at Lumen Christi. We hope you will consider the ways you might share your time and talent with Lumen Christi and join us at the Ministry Fair October 9/10.

Please call the parish office if you do not receive the mailing and we will get one to you. Thank you.

What support is available for my family?

What treatment is available, and how do I get it?

Who can help me (financially, emotionally, physically)?

Lumen Christi partners with Mental Health Connect for support to help you find the resources you need. The Mental Health Navigator can help find mental health treatments, resources, support and education. Visit mhconnect.org.

Today’s Readings The Barriers that Separate Us

We live in a society that has many technological avenues for stimulation and entertainment, one in which the urban population exceeds the non-urban. It is curious that lone- liness is a prevalent malady. It is easy to reach out and touch someone, we are told. But—in truth—it is not all that easy, and statistics from the mental health field will reinforce that opinion. Today’s readings are about the ways in which we can authentically reach out: God touches Adam to create a mate and end his solitude; God -in-Jesus takes on human flesh and death in order that we might come to glory; Jesus reaches out to the children whom the disciples had tried to keep away, showing us the manner in which we must approach the loving em- brace that awaits us in heaven. Until that day, however, we must remember that ours is a sacramental church, a church of signs of the love of God. And so we are called to reach out continually to ease the loneliness and the barriers that separate us from one another and, therefore, from the love of Christ. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Pope Quotes

“It is also a question of helping to fully overcome the stigma with which mental illness has often been branded and, in general, to ensure that the culture of community prevails over the mentality of rejection, according to which greater care and attention is given to those who bring productive advantages to society, forgetting that those who suffer allow the irrepressible beauty of human dignity to shine forth in their wounded lives.”

—Pope Francis -SECOND NATIONAL CONFERENCE FOR MENTAL HEALTH, 06/25/21

Children’s Liturgy of the Word

Starting this weekend there will be activities based on the weekly readings provided to enjoy in the pew or at home through our website’s Mass streaming page. When COVID dies down we will resume group activities.

Children’s Liturgy continues through the school year except for holiday weekends, no CLW MEA weekend.

Did You Notice Our Beautiful New Furniture?

Thank you to Jennifer Soucheray for coordinating this effort and an anonymous donor. It was no easy task with the current shortages of supplies, wrong deliveries, dam- aged deliveries and many differences of opinions!

LUMEN CHRISTI CATHOLIC COMMUNITY

The Shape of the Mass

In the renewal of the liturgy that followed the Second Vatican Council, the full, conscious, and active partici- pation of the assembly was the primary consideration.

By participation, the Council Fathers did not mean just joining in the singing and the spoken responses, but ac- tive engagement and prayerful understanding of the rites.

They envisioned a transparent liturgy, a worship that spoke so directly to the hearts and minds of the faithful that it would require no explanation at all.

The liturgy itself is the best possible catechesis on the liturgy. What does the liturgy teach us? It shows us the ministry of Jesus continuing in the present. He gathers a community. He calls us to prayer and repentance and praise. He teaches us with the very word of God. He does not send us away empty, but sets before us a mar- velous banquet, feeding us with his very body and blood.

Then he sends us forth to do what he has done—to give ourselves for others, not just in words, but in deeds. The Mass is the pattern of our Christian lives.

God of the journey, God of the traveler, We pray for those who leave their homes in

search of new beginnings and possibilities, may they know your presence with them.

We pray that those who seek to make a home in this country may find us welcoming

and willing to help them find a path toward citizenship.

We pray that our legislators,

as they craft new immigration legislation may find the wisdom and courage to enact new policies that

do justice for our country and for those who would immigrate here.

We pray for those who fan the flames of fear and discrimination against the undocumented may be touched with your divine compassion.

We pray in Jesus' name. Amen.

Driver’s Licenses for All

The issue of “Driver’s Licenses for All,” including un- documented immigrants, is currently being debated in MN State Legislature. The Catholic Church supports of- fering Driver’s Licenses for All. Did you know:

Law enforcement supports creating access to driver’s licenses for all immigrants.

Driver’s licenses can be used to verify everyone’s identity, giving law enforcement greater ability to protect public safety.

Allowing undocumented immigrants access to li- censes would grant greater ability to enforce laws in im- migrant communities. Allowing undocumented immi- grants access to a license, a way to drive legally, and a way to identify themselves to law enforcement would increase trust between immigrant communities and law enforcement, leading to greater collaboration and cooper- ation.

Letters of support from sheriffs’ offices and police departments around the state can be found here: https://
