General Interest

Cinema as a Witness to Modern History

GENI-1987 NEW

Since the beginning of cinema, history has been represented and interpreted in a great variety of mass media and independent film productions. It is the explicit subject of archival primary sources as well as a variety of cinematic genres, including historical fiction, documentary and docudrama. But history is also implicitly present in many other film genres, including drama, satire, biography, animation, auteur films, propaganda, animation films and traditional heritage films. Whether or not a cinematic message is explicitly historical, film also needs to be critically analyzed and understood as the product of history, insofar as it represents the values, understandings, culture and technological expertise of a given time and place.
