Dear students

We are proud to present to you the programme of the first IBS International Week. A week full of guest lectures from our partner universities and inspiring speakers from the business community. You will crack your brain on the assignment. You will have a sneak preview of all the electives that will be offered to you in the second year of your studies.

Below you will find an outline of the programme and a brief description on the electives. You will find your personal programme on the last page.

ABC- ART, BUSINESS AND CULTURE

Interested in business and society? Wish to broaden your knowledge base, “know” more about art and culture? Gain a fresh, new perspective?

ART|Business|Culture (in short and hereinafter: “ABC”) aims to introduce business students to the arts. You will be exposed to different art forms - literature, music, painting, architecture and the performing arts - from different cultures. This will reveal the place of art and culture in society in general – through

communication, tradition, social cohesion - and in business in particular, whilst enabling you to identify the latest trends in cultural marketing and entrepreneurship.

Against the backdrop of cultural metropolis Amsterdam, you will be invited to do your own in-depth on-site fieldwork. It will be a journey of discovery: visits to the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh, art galleries or festivals, concerts in the Concertgebouw and Paradiso or an architectural study of the UNESCO World Heritage canals. You will be autonomous in your choice of subject matter and deliverable (essay, video journal, blog, interview). You will research the art form, the particular product(ion), its history, background, political links and sociological significance as well as its business model, marketing, presentation in the media (tv, radio, advertising, interviews) etc.

Findings and products will be shared, a veritable Arts Festival!

Completely new in both concept, content and structure, ABC is a perfect fit for students interested in liberal arts.

ADVANCED EXCEL

The focus of this course is how to create reliable spreadsheet models to analyse financial data for the purpose of decision making. You learn how to create structured Excel workbooks for financial

management.

You do this by creating and adapting existing workbooks. You start with a simple, pre-structured one and gradually go on creating more complex ones while deciding on the structure, functions and tools to use by yourself. You learn how find solutions to problems by searching on-line and re-use published VBA code. Finally, you show you have attained an advanced level of Excel skills and understanding by creating (or adapting) a spreadsheet that helps to decide on a financial problem.

CRITICAL THINKING

Critical thinking interrelates academic disciplines on a meta level. It provides skills to avoid logical thinking errors. Students trained in critical thinking will be equipped to take the best decisions resulting in a higher level of efficiency and efficacy in the working environment. Managers need to take the best decisions possible.

The way to come to a decision is

• To gather all necessary information and analyse it

• Take a rational decision i.e. acknowledge the fact that your thinking is affected by emotions and personal beliefs and to deal with that

This course provides insights in how people manage information. It also provides tools to prevent logical pitfalls and to visualise reasoning fundamental to decision making.

Aspects of Philosphy (e.g.logic) and Psychology (e.g. biases) are part of the programme.

In the Anglo-Saxon world Critical Thinking is increasingly becoming an entrance requirement or helps admission for tertiary education.

CRM BIG DATA

Customer Relationship Management (CRM) Big Data concerns managing a companies interactions with (potential) customers using technology to analyse the needs of these customers as well as to organise, automate and synchronise various business processes. Building and managing customer relationships and creating customer value through the use of CRM requires successfully combining and applying insights from the fields of information technology, organisational strategy, and marketing. Accordingly, this course takes a multidisciplinary perspective. It teaches students how to make CRM-related decisions, to create and execute marketing campaigns and to use one of the most common CRM-applications (SAP CRM). The objective of the subject is to give the student an overview of CRM Big Data, its capabilities and functions, organisational alignment, decision making and ethical issues. The students will also gain hands-on experience with CRM-related decisihands-on making and use of CRM-systems by doing case-based exercises focusing on for example marketing campaigns, sales processes and service processes. These exercises will simulate various business scenarios with the use of SAP CRM.

DIGITAL LANGUAGE IN BUSINESS

The purpose of the elective is to offer you an introduction to coding (as in programming languages) in business. It is the digital language in today’s world that every decent business person is expected to comprehend. The idea is not to train you to become a programmer, but rather introducing you to the background knowledge about the programming languages that you are likely to encounter in the current business practices. By the end of the module, you are not expected to master any programming language, but you are expected to understand the logic of programming, the variety of coding languages, their application in business and their (dis)advantages.

INTERCULTURAL MANAGEMENT

In the first year of IBMS programme, the course Cross-cultural Awareness gives you essential vocabularies so that you can start explore the diversity in our international working envrioment from a systematic and cutlurally appropriate approach. In this second year, Intercultural Management (IM) prepares you further put these concepts and theories in specific practice. You will also be given the opportunity to explore yourselves, finding a way to adapt or maximize your inherent flexibility and cultural intelligence in order to reach the optimal outcomes.

One of the main goals of IM is to provide you a variety of ways to demonstrate your achievements. We aim to build a learning environment that accomodates your intrinsic interests. You are encouranged to choose learning outcomes that best suit your ability: a video, a research paper, or a published article. In this module, we challenge you to turn an idea in to a great product.

MANAGING IN A GLOBALISED ECONOMY

“Think Global. Act Local.” It’s easily said but difficult to apply. The course Managing in a Globalised Economy introduces students to the latest theoretical knowledge and practical application about doing business around the world. In this course, students will find out that there is no one ‘global strategy’ and will gain an in-depth understanding of why strategic action differs among firms and places and how firms compete in foreign markets. The course focuses on three main themes:

i) The global context ii) SMEs and MNEs and

For each theme, there are two textbook chapters, an academic article and cases. Students will analyse cases and form opinions about firms’ international strategies. Debate and discussion takes place in class and on the course blog: mgeibs.wordpress.com.

NON PROFIT CHALLENGE

The Non Profit Challenge is a practical project that allows students to develop their skills by doing. Students will develop knowledge in the areas of diversity, non profit, business ethics, as well as learn about developing paid careers in non profit such as within a global organisation, the United Nations. Students will be responsible for planning several events, such as, visiting a non profit organisation, organising a fundraising event, organising a non profit daya and organising an international lunch for IBS students and staff. In the end, all students will compete to win a coveted prize, certificate and the title “Best Non Profit Group IBS”. The aim of the project is to create more socially conscious business leaders of the future and to tap into the triple bottom line of People, Planet, and Profits.
