Arno Fischer – Emil Otto Hoppé – Mutations III

Until 28.02.2011

To mark the 4th European Month of Photography in 2010, the Berlinische Galerie continues to present four more positions: Emil Otto Hoppé with photos from the 1920s, Arno Fischer, winner of the Hannah Höch Prize 2010, with photographs dating from 1953 to 2006, contemporary online projects in the context of “Mutations III”, an exhibition by the seven partner cities of the Month of Photography, and Nan Goldin with her Berlin work from 1984 to 2009.

People, Objects, Works of Man. Emil Otto Hoppé – Photographs 1925-1929

Emil Otto Hoppé (1878-1972) became known in Germany during the Weimar Republic with his volumes of photos such as “German Work. Images of Germany’s New Rise“ (1930). The exhibition “People, Objects, Work of Man” organised by Kulturprojekte Berlin GmbH shows 60 photographs from this publication, which reflect Hoppé’s fascination with the industrial world and mark his transition to modernist photography. They will be supplemented by portraits of well-known film stars, which the UFA commissioned him to take in 1927. Hannah Höch Prize 2010 – Arno Fischer. Photographs 1953-2006

Arno Fischer (*1927) has been a powerful influence in the world of photography, both as an artist and a teacher, for three generations. His project “Situation Berlin” (1953-1960) is regarded as the most important photographic work about the division of Berlin dating from the early post-war period. His oeuvre, which belongs to the tradition of Life Photography, also includes portrait, fashion and travel photographs. Fischer’s works are single, quasi symbolic images with a complex structure. His key interest lies in the state of society, human relationships, and the individual’s existential constitution.

Arno Fischer received the Hannah Höch Prize 2010 from the State of Berlin. The Cultural Department of the Berlin Senate has been awarding this art prize for an outstanding lifetime achievement since 1996. It is endowed with 15,000 euros and also includes an exhibition and catalogue. The choice of artists is made by the Berlin Senate’s Fine Arts Commission, in which the Berlinische Galerie, the Stiftung Stadtmuseum, the Kupferstichkabinett and the

Mutations III. Public Images - Private Views

The series of exhibitions “Mutations”, a joint project by all seven partner cities of the European Month of Photography, has been devoted to experimental fields of contemporary photography since 2006. In “Mutations III” web-based projects examine the increasing lack of distinction between images of the private and public spheres on the Internet. Artists: Anders Bojen / Kristoffer Ørum (DK), Benjamin Cadon / Ewen Chadronnet (FR), Edmund Clark (GB), Rob Hornstra / Arnold van Bruggen (NL) and Susanne Wehr (D)

The European Month of Photography, an event organised by Kulturprojekte Berlin GmbH, is financed via subsidies from the Foundation Deutsche Klassenlotterie Berlin and the Senate Offices of Berlin, Department of Culture.

Susanne Kriemann. GASAG Kunstpreis 2010

Until 31.01.2011

For many years, in her complex installations Susanne Kriemann has been investigating the influence of documentation and archiving on our perception of reality. She has developed her own archive work for the exhibition in the Berlinische Galerie, in which she arranges the material of her most recent piece, “Ashes and broken brickwork of a logical theory”. Her own and other photos of archaeological excavation sites supplement each other to create a project researching the links between archaeology and modernity.

Born in 1972, Susanne Kriemann is the winner of the GASAG Art Prize 2010, which was awarded for the first time in cooperation with the Berlinische Galerie. This prize, which has now been given a new focus, is awarded by the partners every two years to an artistic position exploring the interfaces between art, science and technology. Susanne Kriemann convinced the jury due to her research-intense working method and the complexity of her forms of representation.

A catalogue appears parallel to the exhibition (19.80 €).

Nan Goldin. Berlin Work. Photographs 1984 to 2009

Until 28.03.2011

Nan Goldin’s photographs are pictures of her life. Displaying great opulence, they show Goldin’s “family” – her friends, acquaintances, lovers. After leaving her parents’ house at the age of 14, she lived in a subcultural scene of drag queens, transvestites and homosexuals, first in Boston and then in New York as from 1978. In 1991 she came to Berlin with a grant from the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) and remained here, with only brief interruptions, until 1994. Since then, she has been returning to the city repeatedly.

With around 70 photographs, some previously unseen, the exhibition gives a comprehensive insight into Goldin’s work produced in Berlin. In a thematic and chronological presentation, the portraits of artists, self-portraits, interiors and still-life images provide an insight into the artist’s person and her close environment. Two picture tableaux, the so-called “grids”, contribute decisively as narrative sequences to our understanding of Goldin’s image of Berlin as a place of creativity and transition.

The exhibition is supported by BNY Mellon and the Hauptstadtkulturfonds (Capital Cultural Fund).

Bernard Frize. Fred Thieler Prize for Painting 2011

18.03. – 06.06.2011

Press conference: 17.03. at 11 am, award ceremony and opening: 17.03. at 7 pm The Fred Thieler Prize for Painting 2011 will be awarded to the artist Bernard Frize (*1949 near Paris), who has dedicated himself to abstract painting since the 1970s. By selecting Frize, the jury decided in favour of an artist who represents one of the most important contemporary positions internationally. Abstraction is founded on reduction to the

consistency of the paints and colours. Bernard Frize understands painting as a process that is dependent on the behaviour of the paint during application. In this way, every work emerges according to its own logic and system, making its compositional structure comprehensible. Coincidence and the technically determined application of paint become the subject of the works, which are conceived as work groups and reveal a remarkable spectrum of variations. The art prize, which is endowed with 10,000 euros, is presented in the Berlinische Galerie every two years. The artists receiving the award are based in Germany, but their creative work can be said to have an international impact.

Patron of the exhibition is the Ambassador of the Republic of France.

Rainer Fetting. Berlin

15.04. – 12.09.2011

Press conference: 13.04. at 11 am, opening: 14.04. at 7 pm

Berlin has constituted one of the most important stages in the life and art of acclaimed painter Rainer Fetting (*1949). As from 1972, he captured the special atmosphere in the western part of the city, when Berlin was the source of important impulses in German society due to student protests and the gay movement. In that period, Fetting became a sensitive observer of the city and its various (art)-scenes. His “wall paintings” in glowing colours employ an expressive style of painting to show Berlin as a lively city open to alternative ways

of life. After the radical political change of the Wende, Fetting remained fascinated by the

new German capital, attentively documenting the changes that have taken place here. For the first time, the exhibition will be showing around 40 works from four decades in four chapters – “Wall Pictures”, “Drummer and Guitarist”, “Role Games and Images of Friendship” and “The New Berlin” – these are comprehensive, central work groups by Rainer Fetting, closely connected to his creative work in Berlin.

The exhibition is being organised with generous support from the Foundation Deutsche Klassenlotterie Berlin; its patron is the Governing Mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit.

Vattenfall Contemporary 2011

29.04. – 29.08.2011

Press conference: 28.04. at 11 am, opening and award ceremony: 28.04. at 7 pm After its successful new concept was introduced in 2010, in 2011 the art prize “Vattenfall Contemporary” will also be awarded to internationally acclaimed artists living and working in Berlin beyond the spectrum of painting and drawing - in media art, performance and

sculpture. In addition to the acquisition of a work for the Vattenfall Collection, the award also includes an individual exhibition in the museum and the production of an exhibition catalogue. Jury: Sabrina van der Ley, Director of the Gallery of Contemporary Art at the Kunsthalle Hamburg; Dr. Thomas Köhler, Director of the Berlinische Galerie; Dr. Heinz Stahlhut, Director of the Fine Art Collection at the Berlinische Galerie; Udo Bekker, Vattenfall Human Resources

Lajos Kassák

Ambassador of the Avant-Garde 1915-1927

17.06. – 17.10.2011

Press conference: 16.06. at 11 am, opening: 16.06. at 7 pm

Lajos Kassák (1887-1967) was a key figure of the Hungarian avant-garde. The exhibition focuses on his years of exile in Vienna (1920-1926) and the theory of picture architecture which Kassák understood as an emancipatory form of perception and expression. In addition, it will show his journalistic activity in the circle of the internationally influential magazine MA [Today], which reflected on expressionist, dadaist and constructivist tendencies.

For the first time, the exhibition will be showing works from a private collection in Paris. Supplemented by selected works from the collection of the Berlinische Galerie, it will trace the manifold trends of the avant-garde. In the decade beginning in 1910, Kassak had already founded an international network, which he extended continually through his contacts in Vienna, Paris and Berlin. Besides literary, artistic and theoretical works by Kassák and his contemporaries, the exhibition also visualises the geo-cultural contexts within which Kassák‘s activity unfolded. Contemporary photos, documents and films present groups, centres, publications and famous artist personalities from that period, including Sándor Bortnyik, El Lissitzky, László Moholy-Nagy, Kurt Schwitters, Tristan Tzara and Herwarth Walden. The exhibition is being organised in collaboration with the Collegium Hungaricum Berlin, where it will be possible to see a second part of the presentation: 2.06. - 25.09.2011, opening: 1.06., 7 pm

Friedrich Seidenstücker. On Animals and People

Photographs 1923-1955

01.10.2011 – 06.02.2012

Press conference: 30.09. at 11 am, opening: 30.09. at 7 pm

Showing 200 original photographs, this will be the first comprehensive retrospective of Friedrich Seidenstücker’s photographic oeuvre. Almost every Berliner knows his photographs. Those who are interested in the history of their city appreciate Seidenstücker’s atmospheric shots of everyday life in Berlin during the Weimar Republic. He developed a truly legendary reputation among animal and zoo lovers with his sensitive animal studies, and his powerful shots of the destroyed city of Berlin represent a valuable resource for historians.

Even though Seidenstücker is regarded as a typical Berlin photographer, he is also known far beyond the city limits - not least because he paid outstanding attention to one aspect in particular: his pictures reveal a sense of humour which is rarely found in photography. Friedrich Seidenstücker’s oeuvre evolved from this approach: founded in optimism, but never drawing a veil over the appalling conditions, harshness, poverty and misery of his age. With this retrospective, the Berlinische Galerie will be continuing its very successful series of

exhibitions aiming for an academic approach to the work of great 20th century photographers,

so making it available to a wide audience. Previous exhibitions in the series focused on Heinrich Zille, Erich Salomon, Fritz Kühn and Herbert Tobias.

A catalogue is to be published with generous support from the Friends of the Berlinische Galerie (Förderverein der Berlinischen Galerie e.V.)

Eva Besnyö 1910 - 2003

Budapest – Berlin

−−−−

Amsterdam

28.10.2011 – 27.02.2012

Press conference: 27.10. at 11 am, opening: 27.10. at 7 pm The Berlinische Galerie plays host to Das Verborgene Museum

Eva Besnyö’s (1910-2003) photographic creed was oriented on the “New Vision” which Albert Renger-Patzsch had also propagated in his pioneering publication “It’s a Beautiful World” (Die Welt ist schön) in 1928. Having grown up in a bourgeois-Jewish family in Budapest, in 1928 she decided to complete her training in the modern photo studio run by Jozsef Pesci. She moved to Berlin in 1930, and the city of the avant-garde continued to influence her decisively throughout her life. It was here that Besnyö developed her

photographic style and, like her Hungarian colleagues – including Moholy-Nagy, Kertesz, Nora Dumas, Ergy Landau and Capa –, she made a decisive contribution to new European

photography.

In 1932 Besnyö left Berlin because she felt threatened by National Socialism. She succeeded in further developing her career in Amsterdam, where she survived German occupation and became a much sought-after photo journalist after the war. The modern aesthetics of the 1920s have always remained the yardstick of Eva Besnyö’s photography. This exhibition with 120 vintage prints will be the first retrospective of work by the Dutch Grande Dame of photography in Germany.

The exhibition and catalogue are being made possible with help from the Hauptstadtkulturfonds.

New Presentation of the Collection

From 17.06.2011

Restructured presentation: from 03.05., opening: 16.06. at 7 pm

The Berlinische Galerie collects art produced in Berlin since 1870. From now on, the museum will be presenting internationally acclaimed works from the fields of painting, graphic art, sculpture, photography and architecture in new exhibition architecture designed by the Berlin architectural office of David Saik. The chronological presentation of our masterpieces in an area of 1,500 square metres reflects the interdisciplinary orientation of the collection and communicates an exciting dialogue among different artistic styles: Art around 1900, Expressionism, Berlin Dada, the Eastern European Avant-Garde, New Objectivity, Art in the National Socialist Era, the New Beginning after 1945 and Positions of the 1950s.

Second in front of Warsaw Bridge)

09.02. – 11.04.2011

Bernd Zimmer’s 28-metre-long painting “1/10th Second in front of Warsaw Bridge, City

Image 3/28” was made for the club SO 36 in Berlin-Kreuzberg in 1978. Zimmer was influenced by American post-war painting, and with this big-cityscape he provided an outstanding example of the “Violent Painting” which drew international attention to the Berlin art scene during the 1980s.

The painting will be handed over in the presence of the artist; the evening will also include discussions, films and music, 08.02., 7 – 10 pm, entrance free
