YOGA RASA COMMUNITY NEWS

June 23, 2006 y Issue 2

Yoga Rasa exists to actively participate in creating peace on our planet by joining with others to grow an all-inclusive yoga study community, promoting total physical, mental, spiritual health and well being.

A “PEACE” OF MY MIND...

Tracie’s message Liz and I had a wonderful Yoga weekend! We created an in-home yoga retreat to renew and replenish mind and body. The weekend culminated in a trip to the movies, An Inconvenient Truth, an eye-opening documentary based on leading-edge discoveries of scientific truth. Al Gore is a warrior in the deepest sense of the word for the good our home, our planet. He presents the seriousness of the issue with a deep sense of reverence, compassion, and mercy offering lots of humor as well. I was deeply moved by this film, it was very well done with a beautifully uplifting ending of hope. Liz and I were both moved to tears with a deep sense of empathy for our planet and the Mother she

has been to us all. Through out this newsletter, Liz has taken care to create an awareness as to what we can do as individuals to heal the Global Warming issue that is prevalent; a very real problem that Mr. Gore presents to us that can be healed. We as Americans are the greatest contributor to the Global Warming problem but the good news is that we as a Nation are in the most powerful position to heal our Mother. Please seek to understand Global Warming from a positive position, visit the website www.climatecrisis.net and take whatever steps are within your reach. The time for turning our heads the other way is done, now is the time to join together as one Global Community and do what it takes to be there for each other and future generations to come. Peace be with you.

We must not, in trying to think about how we can make a big difference, ignore the small daily differences we can make which, over time, add up to big differences that we often

cannot foresee. - Marian Wright Edelman

As Tracie mentioned, we saw a movie over the weekend that everyone should see! It’s called An Inconvenient Truth and it describes the climate crisis we are experiencing – where it came from and where it is leading. This movie is very straightforward and engaging in its explanations. Not only is the description of the problem clear and captivating, but the description of the solution is just as clear and

captivating. I am so grateful to know this information now – the same day I saw this movie, I requested my electric provider be switched to Green Mountain Energy. I am looking forward to continuing to do my part as I learn more.

An Inconvenient Truth is playing at AMC Gulf Pointe 30

Carbon dioxide and other gases warm the surface of the planet naturally by trapping solar heat in the atmosphere. This is a good thing because it keeps our planet habitable. However, by burning fossil fuels such as coal, gas and oil and clearing forests we have dramatically increased the amount of carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere and temperatures are rising. The vast majority of scientists agree that global warming is real, it’s already happening and that it is the result of our activities and not a natural occurrence.

The evidence is overwhelming and undeniable. We’re already seeing changes. Glaciers are melting, plants and animals are being forced from their habitat, and the number of severe storms and droughts is increasing. Global sea levels could rise by more than 20 feet with the loss of shelf ice in Greenland and Antarctica, devastating coastal areas worldwide. [Hmmmm, that means anywhere currently less than 20 feet above sea level would be submerged…sound like anywhere you know? –Liz]

Adapted from http://www.climatecrisis.net/takeaction/ There are many resources on the website above to provide you with things you can do to cut your carbon dioxide emissions. Remember that a small contribution is still a contribution, make changes at the pace you are ready to make them. Making the changes gradually will help you to integrate them permanently into your lifestyle. Here are some places to start:

(3)

6 Replace a regular incandescent light bulb with a compact fluorescent light bulb

SAVINGS: 150 pounds of carbon dioxide a year per lightbulb replaced!

6 Use less hot water – wash your clothes in cold or

warm water instead of hot

SAVINGS: 500 pounds saved per year! 6 Unplug electronics from the wall when you’re not

using them – even when turned off, things

like hairdryers, cell phone chargers and televisions use energy

SAVINGS: The energy used to keep display clocks lit and memory chips working

accounts for 5 percent of total domestic energy consumption and spews 18 million tons of carbon into the atmosphere every year!

6 Be sure you’re recycling at home

SAVINGS: 2,400 pounds of carbon dioxide a year if half of your household waste is recycled

6 Buy organic foods – Organic soils capture and store carbon dioxide at

much higher levels than soils from conventional farms.

SAVINGS: If we grew all of our corn and soybeans organically, we’d remove 580 billion pounds of CO2 from the atmosphere!

6 Avoid heavily packaged products

SAVINGS: 1,200 pounds of carbon dioxide per 10% garbage reduced 6 Switch to green power – switch to energy generated by

clean, renewable sources such as wind and solar Switching electric providers is very simple. Go to

https://www.greenmountain.com/index.jsp and click “Sign up today.” All they need is your current provider

information and they will arrange the switch to take place after your next meter reading.

There is a calculator on the site:

http://www.climatecrisis.net/takeaction/carboncalculator/ to look at your personal contribution to the problem – which can really show you where effective changes can be made. For example, my impact was 17100 pounds per year when I calculated it without renewable electricity and 9900 pounds per year with renewable sources of power. My cost for electricity will not change.

OFFICE ASANA

your yoga practice 9 to 5

Yogi Ashley Milne takes a moment of quiet during her workday.

SHIFT YOUR MENTAL GEAR

When at the office, it is easy to get caught up in deadlines and meetings and becoming “busy” internally. When you find yourself getting into rush or stress mode, this is the ideal time to stop. Taking just 5 minutes or less to breathe and stretch your neck will not only shift your body chemistry but also allow you to be more productive when you go back to your tasks.

For best results, find a place where you can be alone, even if it is the bathroom! Let your chin drop toward your chest, lengthening the back of your neck. Hold for 3 deep breaths. Roll your head to the right, bringing your right ear toward your

right shoulder. Keep your right shoulderblade down and let the left side of your neck lengthen (your ear gradually moves closer to your shoulder but will not touch it). Hold for 3 deep breaths. Take your chin back to your chest and to the opposite side. After holding for 3 deep breaths to the left, bring your chin back to your chest and up to center.

Next, place your hands on your thighs with palms facing up. Close your eyes and listen to your breath – say to yourself “I am all right” (on the inhale), “right now” (on the exhale). Repeat for at least 5-10 breaths or as long as you like. Bring to mind all the people around the globe that are also currently experiencing the same feelings you are (being rushed, anxious, frustrated, upset, etc.). Finish by

bringing to mind 3 things about yourself or your life for which you are grateful – small or big. Contain that feeling of gratitude and expansion as you open your eyes and go back to work.

No excuses! If you can’t find the time to sit, this mental shift can also be done with your eyes open – as you walk to your next meeting or appointment.
