obsessed with keeping

Why do we abuse our

At IKEA, most furniture is made so that it can be
flat-packed. Because we don’t transport air, storage and
transportation costs are much lower.
And, because IKEA buys in large volumes, we get big
discounts that are then passed on to you.
Why do we make you
assemble furniture
yourself?
Why do our designers
think this makes
a good table?
We have a saying at IKEA: “We design the price tag
first.” To make good qua lity furniture at low prices, our
designers need to think differently.
For example, they once approached a company that
made shopping trolleys to create the frame and legs
for one of our tables. By using their imagination, and
staying on the look-out for innovative ways to produce
furniture, they constantly find new ways to keep prices
low.
Nearly all IKEA furnishings are tested according to
tough international standards and codes. Believe us,
they are tough. They are based on real life situations
like kids jumping on sofas and drawers being opened
ten times a day. All tests are done to make sure that
our products are made to last. Quality testing is part
of offering good design and function at an affordable
price.
At IKEA we figure, that if the products can take all the
abuse we put them through, they can certainly stand
some of yours.
Assembling furniture yourself means not paying
some-one in a factory to do it for you. And, although it can
be difficult sometimes, it means you can have the
furni-ture in your home straight away.

Why is IKEA so busy?
You may have noticed that the price tags at IKEA are
full of information.
As you go around, make note of anything you like: the
product name, price and location in the store. Collect it
yourself instead of paying us to do it for you. The fact
that you do some of the work, helps to keep prices low.
Why should I transport
my own furniture?
Why is it sometimes
hard to find help at
IKEA?
Generally speaking, shopping can be more enjoyable
if you’re not harrassed by salespeople. And not having
commissioned sales people also helps to keep prices
low. But if you do have a question, you can just stop
at one of the information counters throughout the store
where someone will gladly help you.
Since catalogue prices are valid for a whole year, lots
of people visit our stores to take advantage of the low
prices. But we try to make your visit as pleasant as
possible by offering to take care of the kids and by
having lots of checkouts open when they’re needed.
You can probably think of a few stores that give a free
delivery service. ‘Free’ usually means the delivery costs
are just hidden in the price you pay at the register.
Self-transportation is easy at IKEA. Products are packed
flat so they’ll fit into the trunk of your car. Taking home
the furniture yourself means you can have it the same
day. But if you prefer, an outside home delivery service
can be conveniently arranged from any IKEA store.
